  1. That's not a great example, even the most moronic member of our illustrious public should be able to spot some of the signs of there being something not quite right about that situation which may start to jingle faint alarm bells..... does no one look up anymore...?! I still maintain that we are all responsible for our own personal safety... if it's a windy day then look up at the trees... if they're moving a lot, don't walk too close to them. You really don't need a diploma in arboriculture to make that judgement. Unfortunately the example you described is exactly the perfectly well meaning logic which leads to everyone expecting someone else to be looking out for them, and then, by extension, when they walk under a falling tree or trip over a loose paving slab, it's everyone's fault but their own... If my groundie walks under me when I'm chucking stuff down, it's his fault and I give him a rollocking.... If a member of the public did the same, they'd also get short shrift.... no doubt I'd get sent down for not digging a moat, rolling out razor wire, erecting a PA system and employing dog patrols, but morally, it would still be the fault of the plank who didn't look beyond the end of his nose that he suffered whatever injuries he suffered...

I found it was only when I got to 9 that it got more expensive...!
  3. Everything's crap these days Andy... life was better in the olden days.... In all seriousness though I have noticed the same, can I get them to hold air? Can I heck...
  4. I really like Aeris, and it's cheap enough to have a punt on... give it a go!
  5. Absolutely right, and I hope the little lad is all better now. But I have to say though, I always make a point of looking up and around in winds, even in the car. It's no one else's responsibility to look out for my children or myself but my own.... It's about time the legal system reflected this and drew a line under the insistence on making someone responsible for everything which happens.... I fail to see how it can be anybody's fault someone gets injured if a branch falls off a tree in high winds, other than the person getting injured by it for not taking sensible precautions about where they were standing. Common sense, or the lack of it, by any injured party needs to become acknowledged as the primary cause of accidents again. We [as a population] expose ourselves to unecessary danger these days purely as a result of the assumption that because we're protected by a poorly judged legal system, bad things won't happen because someone is responsible. Remove that false sense of security and I'm sure accidents like this would become even less common as individuals began to exercise their own sense of self preservation a bit further... Personally, the knowledge that someone will get sued if my child becomes permanently disabled by accident is not sufficient to cause me to expose them to those risks.... The general population would do well to work on that basis a bit more frequently...
  6. Crikey, there really is something for everyone out there!!!
  7. Must be for shooting peasants off the bridge.....!
  8. I use 9mm Boa tied with fishermans at the moment, 2/1 VT self tends like a good 'un but has a tendency to not set at low speeds. It's nice and fluffy so works well on the coated Aeris. Does fly though! It's dirt cheap too so very disposable, unspliced it's less than £1.50 for a cord length... if it glazes just sling it away or demote it to hanging tools off... When I get a minute & a few quid I'm going to try 8mm AP. I like a real short cord, so I'm going to try a length tied with fishermans & when I settle on the cord & length I like I'll get someone to splice me an e2e out of it...
  9. Have a look here first... Chain sharpening
  10. True... I have 3 then thinking about it, because there's one on my flipline as well, I don't use it enough for it to become a real nuisance...
  11. My wife was diagnosed with this 3 months after we got married. She had a 3 month 2 weekly course of R-chop-14 chemo starting October 2007, finished it in January 2009, over 3 years clear now. We also went on to have a little girl last year, the first child to be born after this treatment [she was on the telly, in the papers & does quite a lot of radio... I had months of chemo to beat cancer ? getting pregnant was a miracle - Mirror Online [bit over the top but based in fact!] NHL is an eminently treatable disease. Stay focussed, stay positive and make sure you eat well and get plenty of rest. Going to be a tough few months but you will come out the other side. Good luck my friend! If you want any advice Niki's always happy to talk to other sufferers and help them out with a bit of practical advice & support. [Ha! Nice to be volunteering her for something for a change!!!!] My advice, get yourself a Nintendo DS or PSP... you may find yourself sitting in the chemo room for 12 hours some days, and trust me, it's fecking boring!!!!
  12. I have 2 of the non swivel 3 ways and love them, I have one on a short strop and one on a 15m line which I use pruning small trees & pollarding, well handy. Never found any real need for the swivel version though....
  13. Anyone can do anything if they apply themselves...! Prerequisites then are going to be training - CS30, 31, 32, 38, 39, 40, 41 - that will run to several thousand pounds. Insurance, EL & PL, maybe £500 to £700 ish... Equipment, saws, climbing gear, PPE, again, several thousand Vehicle - small van Experience - this will cost the most as you're going to need to give time up for free to get some. You could also do a formal qualification, that obviously has costs associated with it as well. It's going to be a long, expensive and potentially poverty stricken road, but if you want to do it then go for it!
  14. Is this career intended to provide the primary household income? I'd be concerned that if you're coming into it from the construction industry, your existing financial commitments could well already be far beyond the earning potential of the arb industry. That's the main thing which stops me from diving in full time.... that and when it's sluicing down outside I prefer to sit at my warm desk and still get paid....!
  15. Now that I like.... great car! They make a fantastic noise...
  16. My god that's actually my life.... we should start a support group!!!
  17. Hmmm, will have a look for it through FB, don't use twatter either... see friends using it on FB but no idea how it works... suddenly 31 feels very old! Widget going PAINFULLY slowly at the moment, but probably better for the product... will be worth the wait!
  18. I'm one of these luddites who still uses a Blackberry... how do I look at it? I haven't investigated yet, but if someone could paste a link that would be helpful!
  19. I just insured what has become our summer toy this evening for the princely sum of £260. Roll on a great British summer time, can't wait! Anyone else have any toys they keep tucked up during the winter & wheel out in the sunshine? Strictly speaking this wasn't bought as a toy, it was my wife's car, bought kind of as a treat after she recovered from chemo in 2009. When we had sprog no3 it wasn't really practical [!] so I got an x-type estate for her with the intention of selling this. Evidently that didn't happen, the market was on it's backside, so it has ended up staying, and since I don't really miss what little bit it's worth now, and I couldn't face losing a fortune on what I paid for it [bought from a main dealer with 25k on the clock], it's sort of become our 4th car.... I just bought a set of slightly larger BMW alloys to go on it to make it look a bit more 'manly' now that we're sharing it, need to put 2 tyres on them then they'll go on [my wife was SERIOUSLY pissed when she found out! ] Incidentally, if anyone wants these alloys just ask! Bargain price! Come on then, show us your cars, bikes, camper vans etc!
  20. My wife gets really pissed with me because I insist on going into Tenbury on Saturday mornings and doing a full shop in all the little independent places, butcher, baker, [candle stick maker] fish shop, greengrocers.... I hate supermarkets, we just seem to buy overpriced crap we don't need to the benefit of a few a-hole shareholders every time we walk in there.... screw supermarkets. Can't stand 'em....
  21. Paul really needs to get himself a website... if you search him this thread comes up!
  22. I noticed a Scammell or something on the side of the M5 between Taunton & Bridgwater this afternoon, with what looked like a forestry crane on it.... bit overgrown with ivy but looked straight, as I flashed past at the legal limit obviously.... found it here.... Google Maps Might be a wrecker crane actually looking at the photo....
  23. Depends which ones, there are a few different sorts, the pimple palm ones are OK, not as grippy as the grippy palm things, but on cold wet days at least they're warm & dry!
