  1. Nice smart cantilever design - I particularly like the friction method of holding the log. If you had the time, money and inclination, you could probably get them made up quite cheaply.
  2. No option for charcoal production? It makes the best charcoal and you would be adding value. Definitely worth investigating.
  3. I've had this a couple of times when it's been very cold outside. As has been suggested before get plenty of heat on by not skimping on the kindling. Iight also be worth replacing the rope seal on the door if its leaking.
  4. Just be aware that the guy at Murthly saw mill can be a bit hard work on the phone - he's decent enough and helpful, but just doesn't have the greatest telephone manner. You could try DK Logs between Bankfoot & Dunkeld, as he has a huge stock pile of cord he may be willing to sell some of. D K Logs, Dunkeld | Firewood - Yell
  5. Does it have to be either or? You could do wholesale and local deliveries for when you have the time. I'm not sure about the drive through idea, but it could be something you could think about later if time and or suitable labour became available.
  6. I got a load of wellingtonia early in the summer, which I've just started to mix in. It burns fine, but the smell isn't great.
  7. Nowt wrong with them ads - not in the same league as the jokers that want you to pay to stunt fell and hand ball a pop out of their no access garden.
  8. There will always be customers who will pay a lot of money for a premium product. I concentrate on running the business how I want to and not worry about what other folk are trying. Innovation in the industry is good for everyone.
  9. Evernote is good for notes / quotes. You could set up a template and then just copy it and fill it in. Auto syncing with the PC/mac and available on android and iOS (I sound like a salesman, but I'm not). Have a look here - Evernote | Remember everything with Evernote, Skitch and our other great apps. Forgot to say you can embed pics, vids and voice notes too.
  10. A set of plans on eBay from the US Plans for a Hydraulic Firewood Processor, Wood Splitter | eBay

  12. The bottom line is that all wood pretty much has the same energy content unit of dry weight, so you need to burn more softwood to get the same heat. Sure it seasons quicker, and can get a stove up to temperature quicker, but you still have to have increased amounts of storage space and spend more time tending the stove. Unless the price is reduced significantly to reflect the increased hassle then folk aren't going to be persuaded. The problem is that as a supplier, you have the same processing costs, so unless you are in a position where you are paying for your hardwood cord, but get softwood gratis, it may not increase your turnover/profit. Personally, I love it for getting the stove up to temperature and being cleaner to work with, but I process my own - I wouldn't pay for it.
  13. So, the standard thinking is that it's better to store logs to season so that they are covered from rain, but the air can get at them to dry them through. I've been pondering for some time that it might be better to just leave them completely uncovered for the first 80% of the drying time and then put them undercover to finish off. My thinking is that the covered store will prevent some air circulation and reduce the amount of sunlight to a greater extent than rain falling on them will slow the process down. Any thought? Obviously double handling increases the costs, but shorter drying and less time needing to be undercover may offset that?
  14. I know it seems like a done deal, but if you want to try and do something about it then how about responding to the consultation? There are some good points raised here, which should be rammed home to the whitehall monkeys.
  15. Thrust - what about the following: Opportunity cost of the land - could you sell it or rent it out to anyone else? Insurance Your time to deliver Admin - invoices, banking, answering the phone £56.20 for 2 hours of work when all is told If you can maintain that rate for 35 hours a week you are looking at gross pay of nearly a grand - not a bad wage really. Obviously you would need to be able to shift nearly 800 cube a year (based on 45 working weeks) to maintain that. But is £100 a cube realistic for those sorts of volumes?

  17. If we have another warm winter like last year, the black economy peeps won't run out - especially if we get a windy November.

  20. You've got to admire him. Honest pictures of what it is and how much is available. £30 is better than a kick in the knackers and having to dispose of the timber himself. Good luck to him!
  21. The laddomat is designed to fail safe in case of a power cut.
  22. It used a standard CH pump, so it's no louder than that.
