  1. Pretty much all timber when dry has the same energy per unit weight. Pop has some attributes which make it a decent enough firewood.
  2. BBC News - Video shows near miss between car and lorry at Tomich [ame] [/ame]
  3. They're good. I got the wifi one off Amazon for £35 [ame] [/ame]
  4. Sorry for the crappy out of focus image of the buds. The orangey colour is making think Alder. They were scavenged after being fly-tipped, so I've no images of the tree standing. The butt is about 18" in diameter. Edit: Images now fixed Whaddya think?

  6. An alternative view is that with CH oil being cheaper, folk will have more left over for luxuries like logs. This assumes that the log buyers are shopping for the effect rather than calorific heat output of the firewood - which obviously isn't the case if they are using them as their main source of heat / hw. IME folk who use wood to exclusively heat their homes, or who have systems which can use oil/logs/pellets/solar depending on season/cost, don't buy their firewood from the £100 a cube merchants. If I didn't source, process and season my own firewood, I'd have to either pay full retail price from Logs'n'Stuff or more likely, find one of the cash-in-hand boys he doesn't like
  7. I like that a lot. I've got multiple wood stores throughout the garden. A single large one like that would really tidy the place up! Time to get the tape measure out again
  8. It looks great and should do well at the premium end of the market. Dont be shy on the pricing.
  9. Why keep it in overnight? I don't like smouldering wood clogging up the flue and prefer to light it afresh every day.
  10. I know, it's a pity the supermarkets and fuel suppliers don't do the same too.
  11. Maybe the guy bought some overrun printed bags - or bags that logsanstuff rejected? Either way, its a LOOOONG way from Perth.
  12. Bingo! Dodgey wiring in the towbar socket was the culprit!
  13. Well I've had a look and the elecctrics are like an explosion in a spaghetti factory - its going to have to go in the the garage for them to look!
  14. I've just returned from a little jaunt up north and as I was pulling into the street, the indicators started playing up. Not flashing, and the chime indicating I'd left the key in the ignition humming slightly. I tried the hazards and the rear stop/tail lights are flashing instead. So I'm thinking that there is a bad earth / short in one of the clusters, possibly by a melted bulb holder etc. Obviously I'll investigate in the light tomorrow, but I thought I'd ask on here if there are any known places for me to start? Anyone had this and know where I should point the WD40 first?
  15. I think this is true. With the storm currently rolling in, I bet there's gonna be plenty of chinese chainsaws being prepared to pounce on the wind blown. Not great for sales.
  16. They are all around the Tay. One of the best places to see them is on the Almond. I've seen roadkill beaver a couple of times on the A9 just north of the Inveralmond roundabout.
  17. Birnam, but he's either moved or is moving to Aberfeldy.
  18. Rumour has it that it's family money - inheritance possibly. He's left a bit of a void in Bankfoot and Dunkeld though - I reckon a bit of targeted advertising there would probably yield results.
  19. Oil down 6% today, Brent at $71.50 versus $110 a few months ago. 5yr low is $70 and it could go through that level as OPEC votes to maintain production. Lots of politics here as Russians highly dependent upon oil revenue and under pressure from sanctions over Ukraine too. So, either folk are going to have more cash available for luxury logs, OR those that are more utilitarian in their use and can heat with logs or oil, may switch to using more oil. And are you reducing your transport prices as diesel is cheaper at the pump? Whaddya think?
  20. Ben - that looks good. Different from the usual offerings
  21. All good points, what I'm on about is using the term Stove Mix to market mixed logs which you would otherwise sell as just mixed hw/sw. Give it a name, market it as a special mix for stoves and charge a bit more than your standard hardwood loads/bags. A bit of differentiation never hurt anyone.
  22. I was just reading the chestnut thread and thinking about the spitting nature of it and some other species. Do you think there might be any mileage in marketing a Stove Mix as a type of firewood. It could contain all the stuff that does spit, and may help with moving some folk away from the hardwood only to a more hw/sw mix. Whaddya think?
