  1. Mmmm except they may have bought the houses on the premise that the land use would change to residential / holiday homes.
  2. Yup. I'm just putting in a boiler stove, thermal store and solar hw panels to reduce our oil dependency. Well get the rhi payments for the solar. TBH though the rhi payments for biomass boilers are going to have to be significant for most folk (not on oil) to move away from the convenience of gas or leccy. If they are doing it for the cash, solar pv is likely to provide a better return.
  3. There is a perception problem with domestic customers which exacerbates the problem of increasing prices. The first is that many see it as a black market / cash-based product, where unscrupulous sellers don't provide proper receipts, prefer cash and don't pay as much tax as they should. The second part is that may see it as an unskilled operation, which effectively it is. Of course there are plant, storage and delivery overheads, but the basic operation relies on grunt rather than brains. The public equate this type of operation as minimum wage territory. As its difficult to just increase the price of the end product its necessary to up the game around the service. That may include charging an extra £10 to stack the logs on delivery, providing receipts with vat registrations, having same day or next day surcharges, wearing a uniform / having sign written vehicles etc. etc. Its not good enough to just rely on price competition. That will end with a race to the bottom.
  4. Speak to the enforcement officer and find out what permission you need. Presumably the planning officer told you what you need to apply for when he suggested fitting doors on the barns? Whatever you don, don't stick your head in the sand. They will make life a pain for you if you don't go through the process. Good luck.
  5. Hi folks, I've got a pair of Stihl protective leggings - same as these in XXL Seatless trousers for chain saw use - To be worn over normal trousers I've only used them a handful of times before buying some bib and brace versions. What is the score re second hand PPE. Is there a market for it, or are folk concerned about its history? I guess eBay is the place to list it, but I'm not sure what sort of buy it now price I should be looking for. Thanks in advance
  6. Gilmour I don't have an axe to grind as I'm not in the industry, but all your stats show is that we are importing more fire wood. They say nothing about the supply of and demand for fire wood in the UK as a whole. I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't be doing what you are doing (I'm a free market proponent), but don't be surprised if UK-based producers on here, get a little upset at your offering. Good luck with the business.
  7. I thought it was just because I had office boy hands. I'm glad that someone else struggles too. FWIW I carry a leatherman and use that when I'm feeling limp!
  8. It's about opportunity costs and competencies. By the time you have factored in the additional plant, storage and variable costs in, in (very) simple terms, Paul could earn £10 per hour processing the arb waste into logs, or earn £30 an hour doing tree work - I'm guessing at the exact numbers, but the principle is there. Obviously, this assumes that he is already busy doing arb work and doesn't have the capacity sitting around drinking tea. I work as a management consultant. I could spend the time doing my own books, but I earn more doing my core work than I pay someone to add things up for me - I'm also not very good at it
  9. Nice looking bikes. I've never seen a Van Nich described as a winter hack before LOL!
  10. You'd be better with a ghetto cantilever saw horse
  11. Nice one Simon - just signed up
  12. Hi there I've found and read these threads: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/21628-oregon-powersharp.html?highlight=PowerSharp http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/19645-anyone-tried-oregon-power-sharp-pros-cons.html?highlight=PowerSharp http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/19249-oregon-powersharp.html?highlight=PowerSharp Is there anyone actually using it on here and is it as good as trade are saying?
  13. That's a pretty short term outlook. No good for themselves or their customers in the long term. I guess you'd need to try and differentiate in some other way rather than price then, to charge the premium. Is there any mileage in custom log sizes? I know that my stove takes 14" logs and so I cut everything on that basis. It makes it simpler and more economical to cut, split, stack and carry from store to stove. Do you think folk would consider paying for loads cut specifically to their optimal dimensions? Could it be done in a way which could pay?
  14. Yeti - your post could be interpreted as suggesting that it would be a good thing if the suppliers in your area (you included) could come to some agreement about the price you charge so that you could all increase your prices. Sorry if I misunderstood.
  15. Thankfully, price fixing and cartels are illegal.
