  1. We have recently experienced a problem with the conveyor belt. Spoke to Fuelwood and despite the machine being way out if warranty they are going to fix it free of charge. Not only that as our machine is 1 of the first they have offered to upgrade all the parts that they have experienced problems with on our machine and other peoples and fit new features they have added free of charge as well. Got to say a big thankyou to Fuelwood for their top customer serviced. Needless to say from my experience I would recommend them to anyone. You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  2. It's very unlikely your going to get an honest day rate on this forum, everyone is worried that they will get undercut and lose work. If we all did post our day rates it might just force up prices and enable everyone to do a better job and have a more comfortable life, that said I'm not going to post mine! In my part of the country (Berkshire) as far I can see companies are charging anywhere between £400-900+vat for a 2 man team truck and chipper. Work out your day rate and stick to it. If it helps I have 3 rates depending on the complexity of the job and I know my profit margin so can give a discount if works tight or I want the job. I would encourage you not to get caught up on price. That is to say there will always be someone cheaper than you whatever you charge but clients don't always buy the cheapest. Aldi is cheaper than Waitrosse but they are both still full of people spending money. Look at your service, the way you present and sell yourself to the client and ask is there anything I could have done better? If there is do it next time. If not move on and forget it. I get 80% of the jobs I quote for and from feedback I get I'm generally the highest quote. Don't get angry and frustrated life's to short. You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  3. How much? You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  4. We have one of first ones. Good machine and Fuelwood have looked after us well. You do need to cut the logs well ie parallel With a good system and 2 good guys we can do 30m3 bags in a day. This doesn't include cutting. Going to take a good few years to make back the investment but beats giving away good logs just to get rid. You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality

  11. I'm looking to employ a new climbing foreman to work alongside my existing staff. My company is called Beechwood Tree Care Ltd. We are a contracting business and at present employ 4 tree surgeons, a hedge cutting team, a grounds maintenance crew and a site clearance crew. We are based in Berkshire, mid way between Reading, Henley and Maidenhead. We work within a 50 mile radius of our yard but generally within 15 mile radius. We have been trading since 1999, an AAAC for last 11years, and work for a wide range of clientele, generally at the higher end of the market. At present we are booked up well into February and very rarely have a problem finding work due to our reputation and quality of workmanship. We have an extensive range of equipment, which is all relatively new, well maintained and replaced regularly. (Have just purchased complete new stock of saws) The person I'm looking for will be a very good climber, trustworthy, well qualified, experienced, professional and keen to always do their best. I also looking for someone to bring new ideas and experiences, to our team. In return you will be well treated, well paid, be part of a great team and get to do some challenging work, sometimes in some incredible places. There will be very little hedge cutting, as we have separate crew to deal with this. There maybe the possibility of doing some pricing and tree inspections, dependent on ability and experience. Pay range for a foreman is between £26000-£31200 per year (PAYE) depended on qualifications, experience and abilities. You will be paid extra for driving to and from site. We operate a bonus scheme, with the crew receiving a proportion of the income from any extra works carried out. Your PPE and clothing will be provided. You will be paid a monthly allowance towards your climbing kit, the LOLER inspections will be paid for. You will receive 20 days paid holiday plus bank holidays. Applicants will need to come for a interview, followed by a weeks trial. If you are interested pls email or PM me your CV or call me for a chat. (All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence, as I realise you maybe already be working locally) Neil Email. [email protected] Mobile. 07961163520
  12. We use quickbooks. Works well for us. They have a iPad app but we just use the PC based version. Well worth the money I feel You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  13. We brought hedge cutters and saws from range of Stihl battery kit for a contract working on waterways earlier this year. Unfortunately it really wasn't up to the job. We killed a hedge cutter after a few days! The chainsaw was very under powered. The back pack battery gets so warm it's very uncomfortable to use. I have the say Stihl and my local dealer ( ListerWilder ) were really good about listening to my concerns, making useful suggestions and in the end took all the kit back and gave me full refund. Looking back Stihl battery kit just is not good enough for commercial use yet. I'm a big Stihl fan and the benefits of battery kit huge less vibration, noise no stinky fumes. When they get it to a commercial level I will be first in the queue You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  14. The best back saving device we found was to hire a local 360 driver and his 3 tonne machine. He has a grab on on it, which is great for moving lengths of timber or holding it off the ground to be cut into rings. The larger rings he then splits into halls or quarters using a concrete pecker and picks them up stacks on pallets. We use telehandler to put pallets next to splitter. Spilt logs into vented bags put on pallet and stacked Don't get me wrong there is still some lifting and bending involved but its keep to a minimum. Short answer 360 with grab and pecker and a telehandler.
  15. I don't often comment on arbtalk threads but I feel I need to stick up for the AA in this one. If you want to prove you are a good contractor then become a AAAC its the best scheme we have and useful way of checking your complying with all the relevant legislation as well as pruning well. To Paul's credit he is always available to give advice and to be honest that's worth the fee on its own. Bottom line for me is when someone out of my area asks for a quote I tell them to look on the AA's website. I know these contractors have been rigorously assessed and our likely to be a good contractors. If you see a AAAC doing poor or dangerous work then make a compliant to the AA. The AA are doing a good job and have my backing. You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  16. Browsed by giraffe's in the early 80's don't worry Maggie had them all slaughtered cause the stuck up for the miners! Looks like human intervention to me, now trying to reform it's lower crown.
  17. One of my chaps could come over tomorrow with our bandit. He is going to call you tonight. You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  18. So has anyone sold chip for more than £3 per tonne in the last couple months. If so to who and how much? You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  19. Do you get any commercial ? Fair play if you do, that's German arb rates You can't alway compete on price but you can on quality
  20. If i assume you priced the job as x men for x days and priced accordingly? If your ahead of time and can finish within time doing the extra work, then do it but make sure your clear with the client about what's happening and that you are effectively doing more work for the same money. If your behind time or on time, then I think it's reasonable to charge extra, ie your normal dayrate for however much extra it takes but again explain this to the client. May feel like an uncomfortable conversation to have but it's situation your likely to be in many times is years to come. Best get it over with ASAP and move on. Good Luck
  21. Speak to Nod at Treeworker His Gaffer system is far better than Cobra and easier to install He is going to want photos and measurements to be able to tell you what you need My advice prune as well as bracing but make sure the tree structure is suitable ie Is the tree worthy of retention, can you install a brace in the right place to make a difference to the loading of the weak unions If bracing is not something you have done before/qualified to do get someone in to work with and learn from them whilst doing the job (again speak to Nod at Treeworker )
  22. They were selling like hot cakes at the arb show But having just brought vertex vents inc earmuffs, clear and mesh visors and weigh less for almost £100 less I can't see why you would spend the extra money But tree surgeons do like shinny stuff
  23. With a TPO you have to ask can I do x because ... and the LPA say yes or no In a CA you have to say I'm going to do x in six weeks and the LPA have to TPO the tree within the six weeks to stop you If they don't TPO the tree or respond you can go ahead Normally if they are not going to TPO the tree they send a letter saying they have no objection to what you plan to do But in my experience tree houses require Planning permission
  24. I built a treehouse for my kids a couple of years ago and one of my neighbours complained to my local LPA Caused a lot of grief, planning enforcement officers came round, in the end I had to submit a retrospective planning application as it was a raised platform over 300mm high So in my experience Planning application required and as part of that you may be required to provide an Arboricultral method statement. Good luck
  25. Lets face it we are all running overloaded everyday Whether we realise it or not Whether we run 3.5 or 7.5 Stick your truck on weigh bridge and see how much weight you have to spare? Wet chip weighs about 400kg per m3 Updating your springs is the best way until someone has a better idea for legal waste carrying truck for arborists, that's not a £100k or a 20year old mog!
