  1. Cannon and sugi are about the best bars. Oregon sculptor bars are about £60 and may suit you if only carving now and then. As said before a smaller saw would be easier and they will have a standard bar mount C1 I think. You will need a quarter sprocket too to run carving chain. Not sure about sugi but cannon also do the bigger S1 mount that would fit your 261. You can get 3\8 picco and 1/4 rims for that saw, I run a couple on the older 026's Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  2. :-) I like your thinking gray git, when we visit the folks in Ireland my girls put honey in acorn cups and leave them for the fairies along the lane next to the trickling streams. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. Hi John, You could have look through this forum for starters buddy. There's also carving post or is it carvers post? Look it up on Google. If you do Facebook there's a few groups on there that would be useful, chainsaw carvers, power carvers to name a few. Cheers, Si Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. Hi there, yes it was a paid booking and I could sell also. I know what you're saying but a lot of folk just want to pick out what they like and take there and then. Fitting in time to build up stock is an issue like you say but I'm looking at it as speed carve practice, the more I do the quicker and better I get :-) Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  5. I've done a few demos now but this was my first weekend booking at a big garden center. I need to build up plenty of stock pieces but on the whole it went really well. Owls did well, no surprise there;-) Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app

  10. OK, I'm now leaning towards scaffolding but have no idea what I'd need. If anyone knows their way around this kit can you enlighten me please. I need to speak to a scaffolder. My latest plan is to build a square structure around the tree butt. Inside space would be 5 ft square. So 4 uprights with 8 horizontals would give me a base for a planked walkway around the tree. I would need to add a few more poles on outer edge for safety barrier as well. Does this sound about right? Not sure on pole lengths or fixings though. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  11. I agree, preferred the unpainted look, maybe a matt finish would look better. Was it a gloss finish or were the pics taken when still wet? Great carving though! Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  12. Stilts would be fun, I've got a feeling they'd balk at the idea though lol Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  13. Thanks for the input guys, I'm carving a couple of 9 ft ish oak butts and where normally I would just stand on another log etc this time I need to adhere to hs regs. They're stood up on some sleeper sized posts so about 8 inch off ground and the ground is pretty level. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  14. Interested to hear what solutions are out there, other folks experiences etc. I need to provide a safe working platform for my current job and my thoughts were to get say five builders trestles to form a semi circle around the tree and overlay scaff boards. I won't need to go higher that four foot with it but want to know if this has been done before successfully or whether scaffolding is a better option. Your thoughts are most welcome :-) Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app

  19. Hi pal, Have a chat with abercarver as he's organizing a show for the midlands next year. I've only done a few shows so far but the norm from my experience is carve one big piece and several speed carves. All go for auction, some shows the carver gets all monies from auctions, some you pay a commission, some you donate speed carves to local charity. The bigger shows use oak and redwood, the few I've done were sitka and macrocarpa. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. OK it,s just happened again whilst typing a reply. Message came up saying 'unfortunately Arbtalk had to close' With options to report or decline Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
  21. Looks great, looks like you could do with a few more laths to stop any bowing in the middle though. I've seen logs stacked in the round before at a shipwrights, I think they had them bound with pallet banding. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Arbtalk mobile app
