  1. Britain produces around 16 million tonnes of coal per annum. Electricity generation uses around 55 million tonnes per annum so the majority is imported and I think Russia is the main supplier. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Why did not go with spikes? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Done this big oak today. The before pic is closer than the after one. It took a fair few hours. Its alright i think but the left side is a little flat and maybe I should have taken more of the tips so it looks tidier. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  8. Today's job was removing a snapped out top on a swamp cypress. It had been snapped a couple of months but had not fallen because it was cable braced to another stem. It did come down fairly easily once I cut some branches off. Some big Douglas firs beside where we were working. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  10. Sir John Hackett wrote a good book about a possible Third World War. It is obviously fiction but gives a good overview of how a conflict could have progressed. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. They wouldn't have needed to invade, if they had defeated the land forces in Germany and stopped American reinforcements arriving Britain would have been forced to sue for peace I think. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Really the UK would get nuked? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. It's ancient between the Greeks and the Turks. Istanbul was formerly called Constantinople which was the capital of the Byzantine empire. The main religion here was Greek Orthodox. Constantinople fell to the Muslim Turks in 1453 which was the end of the Byzantines. Greece was controlled by the ottoman Turks until the Greek war of independence in the 1820's. After ww1 Greece invaded turkey to try claim back what they seen as their ancient lands and were defeated. So a lot if history between them! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Oh but you need them incase those nasty Russians rise again.........., Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Ye some do. We used to go to the bog every year to turn the cut turf. Hard work! Peat briquettes are widely sold, great burning but crap environmentally. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Peat extraction has decimated most of the raised bogs in the Irish midlands. It used to be one of the main fuels used in electricity generation in Ireland but not so much now. It was also used by most households as a fuel before oil and gas took over. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. I also have the original version of the book it is really useful, covers so much stuff, can lend to people if they want to have a look. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  23. It's mad the attachment we have worth dogs and other animals. Me and my ex have a spaniel and when we broke up we decided the best place for her was at my ex's mam and dads place where we lived. I see Stella a fair bit and keep her for a month at a time but I still miss her like mad. I got one of her pups now do that helps Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Gm is a no no I think. Big corps controlling our food supply even more so than now- bad times Regarding the human population, our only hope of long term survival is a move off planet. The sooner the better. More and more people demanding more and more from a planet which is really a closed loop. I know that population growth is slowing and that it should start to level out towards the middle of the century but by then there may be 9 billion of us! We should be exploring the asteroids and maybe not so much planets like mars. The asteroids have all the resources we need and don't have the handicap of strong gravity for us to get to and get off. Anyway bit of topic! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
