  1. Maybe it's been nice in NI:confused1: but here (in Lincs) I've had drought cracks (some 4ft deep!) in my land from february, and they're still there! That's on heavy-ish clay. We have a major moisture deficiency, earlier in the year the government declared an official drought status for the east midlands and though we have had a bit of rain since (just after cuting the hay obviously, and then some more when combining) but nowhere near enough to counterbalance!
  2. a Bit far out perhaps but my first thought was olive?
  3. Hedgelaying:thumbup1:
  4. Thanks guys, I might keep an eye out for one then. I wasn't going to go for an ebay one as they do seem a bit much but keep an eye on the various release tenders. I would have though weight won't matter that much for milling? And regarding the chip clogging, If I were to use it solely as a milling machine I could "adapt" the side cover to get improved chip flow I think.
  5. Am I right in thinking it'll have some good ole'fashion grunt? It won't need to do much so not that bothered about the vibes, but it can soon be cheaper than hiring a mobile mill and heaps more fun to do. How much would a decent one be worth?
  6. I'd like to be able to do some milling, as I have a few nice straight-ish oaks to come dowm and a barn to build. I've been looking at buying an ex-mod 181, as they're in plentifull supply. I've never used a 181 though, what are they like? Also, have any of you guys bought ex-mod saws, and how were they? Thanks, Daniel
  7. This is the graph, I know the answer is in there, but I'm just not sure!

    kohler

  9. I've just come home with a little generator with the above mentioned engine. It looks ex-mod and quite well-built. It's drained of fluids though so I wondered if anyone on here knows what oil I should give it. I found an owners manual on 'tinterweb but I cannot make sense of the graph that tells you wich oil:blushing:. I was told it was a 1.9KVA genset but that seems a bit low for an 8hp engine, thinking 8hp is about 6Kw is about 5Kva so maybe 4Kva with the mechanical losses etc? Any tips or hints or things I should be aware of, I've never dealt with a kohler before, but have only heard good things about the build quality etc. Any info welcome, thanks
  10. I used it for hedgelaying as they'd built up a rubble track against the hedge, as well as stapled rabbit-wire to it. I used up two chains in 3 days and was left quite dissapointed. It never got even close to being as sharp as a proper chain and seemed to get blunt much faster, or perhaps I should say "unusably blunt" as it does sharpen really fast, but as soon as you've held it near a nail, or showed it some brick-dust it's proper blunt again straight away. It's hanging on the wall, on one of those rusty nails, next to the spent silky-blades etc.

  12. I caught a bus with the saw once, only a little ms180 though so cute and cuddly. Only had people smiling at me and being really nice and polite. I suppose that may have been as I also had my Silky strapped on the left, my small forest axe on the right and a huge wooden mallet swung over my shoulder:001_cool: I think if you take the bar off you should be fine though, I can't see why anyone would have a problem with that.
  13. I can't do the 1st, or any other weekend for that matter. I'll happily accomodate anyone coming from afar even if I can't come though. My wife often works away at weekends and a tree tour with my 4 y-o twin daughters would probably not be the best idea. I do have to go to the Netherlands about that time somewhere for my dad's big 60th birthday party but there is no date set yet but like I said, if I'm around, you're welcome.
  14. As far as I'm concerned the only qualification that really matters is wether or not you've been "accredited" by the NHLS, before that it's all about experience and wether or not the job suits you etc. If you're looking into training to learn hedgelaying from scratch, have a look at the NHLS website NHLS - Training opportunities I know that did not answer your question, but I hope it still helps.
  15. I'd put it at the back, depending on reach and weight limits. It means you may be able to load/unload from a trailer as well and also unload that bit closer to the customers' log store (wich is nearly always difficult to acces by vehicle, why?).
  16. I would be as well, provided they don't mind me taking some black shoe-polish to them first:001_cool:
  17. An IBC, cut in half with some pallets stacked in it for easy working height/access. Depending on how technical you want to get you could cut it lower so it'll hold 250l (for a 200l barrel) plus the dispalcement of the pallets (or whatever rack you use). You could be finished for £50, and have some spare capacity for that 20l tin of chain oil, the engine oil for the van etc.
  18. I still don't know, as there is no date set(?) I can still offer some beds for those that want them though, although I realise our standards may not be up to those of urban ladies . The cottage next door is booked until at least the 11th I believe, we have a German engineer living there until then, he was sent by mr Claas show the locals how it's done.
  19. I know sparrowhawks hunt on the move, thet can (and do) hover though. I have a pair nesting at the bottom of my field and have seen them do it. The point I was making was not that it was a sparrowhawk, but that it would be more likely to be one than a kite or buzzard.
  20. As far as I know, it does travel along the grain slightly easier, but that'll not make much difference in drying. Even if it would dry three times as quick "along the grain" (wich I doubt it does) you'd have to cut them to less than a foot long to be effective.
  21. But you did anyway........ I'd say it would be more likely to be a Sparrowhawk if he were indeed mistaken. Slightly bigger than a kezzie, similar shape, slightly longer tail but without seeing their colours they can look very similar. Sparrowhawks do glide, circle and hover. To mistake a kite or buzzard for a kestrel would be quite a feat, even for the un-initiated:thumbup:
  22. You're welcome here as well, If you venture near the mighty moutains of Scredington.
  23. There's a polycarbonate manufacturer near us and they get sheets supplied on 8m pallets for single use. They sell them to the locals (they have a custom built trailer for this purpose) as they have 4 full length 5"x6" beams in them as well as lots of planks. I always use a spade and a small block for leverage. The spade allows you to push against the whole board thus avoiding splitting. It tends to pull the nails right through the board rather than pull them out though.
