If that's the case then his judgement should be very seriously called into question. As voters, the only option we have is to take people on their word. If we don't believe they actually mean what they say we should not vote for them. Admittedly, integrity is a value in very short supply in the political world.

No. The important point though is that he wants them to happen.

Trouble is he does follow through. He consistently votes against abortion, the right to die and gay marriage. All religiously motivated. He would, no doubt, abide by the outcome of government votes but I personally don't want someone who thinks and votes the way he does in charge of the country.

To be a fully commited Catholic you are required to believe that the world will end at any time with the return of the messiah. This end will be glorious, with all those choosing not to believe in the ridiculous being sent to an eternity in Hell. This is not the sort of person I want involved in any way whatsoever with the forward planning of society. JRM gets to vote on very important issues, his religious convictions determine how he votes. He believes that a combination of two cells has the same rights to life as a living human being. He is opposed to abortion even in the cases of rape and incest. He is opposed to giving terminally ill people the right to choose when to bring their own life to a close. He is opposed to giving gay couples the right to marry. He is presumably also against condom use in Aids riddled Africa. These stances are all religiously motivated, and make him a monster in my book. Pubicly not believing in God is a serious impediment to getting the most important job in the country. This is crazy given what people of true faith actually believe. Rees Mog obviously has every right to hold these views, but I hope that people will deem him unfit to govern, given the sort of ghastly society he personally wants to see.

This will not be a particularly popular comment, but I am a bit dissapointed that Jacob Rees Mogg and his wife have chosen to have six kids. Knowing what we do about population pressures and dwindling resources I see this as somewhat selfish and irresponsible. Not necessarily qualities we would want in a potential leader of our country.

Yup. Trouble is, when you go to extremes, the discussion becomes about you rather than the point you are trying to make. There ends up being no point in airing your views in the first place. If you really care that people are made aware of stuff, this is a problem.

Good points Vesp and Forestboy. There are important things here that we need to be thinking about. The problem, it seems to me, is that you won't make any headway because you both add unjustified hysterical nuggets to your opinions. This automatically puts people off, and on the defensive. The deeper underlying context just get's lost. We certainly need to be on the lookout for bad ideas dressed up as good. This is easier in today's world as we are so much more connected and almost everyone has a voice. This gives me confidence that we will probably be OK. My advice (for what it's worth) would be to tone it down a bit. Avoid the temptation to leap straight to apocalyptic conclusions and you might find a more receptive audience. On the other hand, if you merely wish to provoke and make people dislike you, carry on.

After no careful consideration whatsoever I have decided to be offended by that comment! It's about time that the privilaged accepted that idiots are an oppressed minority, and the world will only be truly just when idiots make up 50% of the representatives in every walk of life.
