  1. Yes, dramatically. This is the importance of science and research. It shows us what is actually happening, rather than what we believe is happening, and helps us to continually make better decisions as societies. Please, please read ' The better angels of our nature' by Steven Pinker. This is just simply untrue. We still have a long way to go, but we really are getting better.
  2. Dubious sources??? You couldn't find a more qualified person to report on this. He is one of the most highly respected scientists and thinkers on the planet. Humans haven't themselves evolved, their moral framework has, and has to. We started to get significantly more civilised from the enlightenment period onwards when we started to value reason and science over myth and superstition.

  4. That is a terrible argument. Morality evolves over time as we learn more about the world, ourselves and the wellbeing of concious creatures. Adhering to an 'objective' morality conceived 2000 years ago is a dangerous idea. Is it morally wrong to kill someone under any circumstances? No. This chap is arguing that we should adhere to the moral code of the Bible. Taken in it's entirety this is just about the least positively moral code you could possible imagine. The reason we are more positively moral in the modern world is because our morals have evolved, guided by human reason and science, rejecting much of the behaviour advocated in the Bible. The authors of the Bible had some good ideas and some very bad ones. It is enlightened human minds that have decided which were good and which were grotesque. If we played by God's rules the World would be horrendous.
  5. You are absolutely impossible to have a proper conversation with. You constantly say I am thinking things that I absolutely do not think and then you call me deluded for thinking them!? How can one possibly work with that?
  6. That's just plain silly. Notwithstanding the fact that it is belief in God that is the root problem of many of the complications we are talking about on this thread.
  7. Yes, I think I probably do. Don't you just hate people who can't keep their emails brief!
  8. That's child labour BigJ. You could at least have given them a bigger shovel!
  9. Muggeridge was a ridiculously out of touch sex pest who found God, converted to Catholicism and became obsessed with broadcasting the evils of birth control, the Life of Brian and The Beatles. You may consider him a radical and insightful thinker but I personally have my doubts.
  10. And all who sail in her. Are you allowed to say that?
  11. Did you not hear the laptop violently disintegrating against the tartan wallpaper?
  12. You're ranting- totally, uncontrollably and self defeatingly.
  13. If your prime concern is to protect your children from harm you are focussing your wrath in the wrong places. Immigration should be way down your list of concerns. It is an undeniable fact that an immigrant is far more likely to save your child's life than take it from them.
  14. I try very hard not to make silly judgements of people's thoughts. If I have failed at this I apologise. Please explain what it is I want to do and I will happily make all the necessary corrections.
  15. That might just be the most depressing post yet.
  16. The main reason we make no headway in these discussions is this constant leaping to extremes when anyone talks about options. We can't get anywhere useful when this misrepresentation happens. I know you mean well Mark (and you are by no means the usual suspect), but this repeating pattern is just so frustrating.
  17. That is an excellent question which deserves a long and detailed answer. You will have to allow me a bit of time.
  18. I understand the sentiment Mull, but closing off the country and turning a blind eye to the rest of the world is almost certainly going to be more damaging to the lives of your grandchildren in the long run.
  19. We need to develop better screening methods, and nobody is saying let all asylum seekers in. It is important to remember that the vast majority of desperate people are trying to get away from extremists themselves.
