    What domestic energy crisis? Idiots pay too much and will be poor until they’re dead. Shrewd consumers have worked out better ways and their wives’ bosoms are the best in all the land. Seems fine to me. Now imagine the government mandates that you have to use a certain energy type, possibly from an approved supplier (an MP’s cousin probably). That’s a monopoly and everyone would be equally fucked. As a shrewd consumer, I don’t want that.

    If it’s a good idea for them, people will do it voluntarily. If it’s not a good idea, no reason for the government to push it on people. You’re probably right about the lobbying.

    I agree it’s criminal that every house doesn’t have all the very widely available stuff that makes bills smaller and probably saves whales but making things compulsory will just put the price through the roof. Car insurance is an example. Me and a mate both drive shitters worth about £300 with a full tank. Mine is in the UK, where insurance is mandatory, and costs £420 to insure. His is in New Zealand, where insurance isn’t, and costs £80.

    Public liability: The usual setup* is that Tree Company Ltd is the bona fide contractor to Mrs Miggins the customer and Tom the freelance climber is a labour only subcontractor to Tree Company Ltd. Tree Company Ltd are liable for their own negligence (like their chipper leaking oil onto the driveway) and are also vicariously liable for Tom's negligence (like Tom dropping a branch through a greenhouse). *Tom might have an unusual setup where he's a bona fide subcontractor to Tree Company Ltd but would probably know if that was the case. Employers' liability: Unless you're taking a groundsman, don't worry about it. Professional indemnity: Don't know. Never thought about it.

    So PUWER doesn’t say it and the code of practice isn’t law. There have been 37976 pieces of secondary legislation passed since 1998. If the government wanted it to be law, it would be law.

    I was thinking about this earlier today after seeing a bollard with a square hole in the front, I assumed for a 3/4" impact gun. I'm sure I've seen someone before, probably on youtube, who had a Haarken winch key chucked up in a drill too.

    I wouldn’t start adding stuff to the chipper btw. They give enough electrical grief, cunting around with malfunctioning no-stress etc, without adding more things to go wrong. Loads of people have leisure batteries and inverters in vans and they work.

    I’d suggest a second battery for the inverter. Your van or chipper starter battery is designed to boot out a lot of power hard and then get charged straight back up with the alternator. A leisure battery is designed to be discharged lower with a constant draw. Use a voltage sensing split charge relay to charge the leisure battery from the starter battery. It’ll only charge when the van is running and prevent you from draining the starter battery when you draw from the leisure battery. Bear in mind that for the cost of a leisure battery, inverter, split charge relay and some wire, you could probably buy another tool battery or two. Not that that’s what I’d do. 240v AC in the van is mega useful.

    I have a theory about businesses that are frequently discussed on forums: Any forum will generally have a couple of guys on it who run businesses supplying stuff/services for whatever that forum is for. Anyone asking for recommendations for that service will be inundated by people saying how good they are. Some will be genuine but a lot will be parroting. A lot of people will also exaggerate how good the business is or omit truths about problems they’ve had with it. I wonder whether the opposite is also true? Northern Arb get slated on here prodigiously. Perhaps they’re just a fashionable company to slate on this particular forum and actually there are loads equally bad? P.S. I’ve had one dealing with Northern Arb and they delivered fine.
