  1. Could the radiator have been leaking slowly but the drips have been caught by the under engine tray? I’ve got a driveshaft leak (I think) on my van but the oil sits and congeals on the tray rather than showing itself on the driveway.
  2. Are hardwood beams usually cut full dimension (as opposed to nominal dimensions commonly used on softwood where a 2x4 is actually 1.75”x3.5”)? So would an oak 2x4 actually measure 2”x4”?

    ArbDogs? Pics!

Picture only to shamefully grab your attention I’m afraid. I’m after an Alsatian/German Shepherd or close cross. Speaking with rescues already but open to private arrangements. Not mega fussy on specifications; age, sex etc. PM me if anyone happens to come across a likely candidate please. Anywhere in England or Scotland possible.
  4. I’ve always thought they’re just different for the sake of being different. What advantage do they supposedly have over a bollard?
  5. Sawdust and old engine oil.
  6. I’m afraid that my prevailing position must therefore most cordially revert to that of my first post in this thread. Seriously though. Some clipboard enthusiast who can’t satisfy a woman will read this in business hours and we’ll all need to buy load cells.
  7. An example of a relatively tricksy thing I did. Can’t remember why but it made sense at the time with what was in front of me. Just see it as an example of inventiveness rather than a how to.
  8. Returning to the main topic, the advice I’d give is some 2” stuff is stronger than some 6” stuff and it comes down to way more than just size. It’s species and how you load it. Think of tying high into topped Lombardy poplar regrowth then transferring into another tree. Could be a 6” stem at the tie in but it’s a long lever on a probably weak knuckle. If you want to get a particularly high or particularly convenient tie in and you’re questioning the strength, think of it more like a rigging problem. A double rope can go through more than one crotch, like loading both sides of a Y. Single rope tie ins give you loads of options. I very often redirect, fishing pole, wrap etc to get a convenient dangling point that won’t matter if it breaks because the point would just slip back to the last redirect/union/sling/whatever. Obviously keep an eye on it but look to invest time setting it up well so you can work confidently from it throughout the day. I can’t remember having a tie in point break, which means either I’ve not had one break or it wasn’t scary enough to remember because I built it with redundancy in mind.
  9. Once upon a time I’d have argued for days about the healthiness of raw and unimpeded expression but luckily I now don’t care enough to. Your site. Consider the matter resolved.
  10. Meant partially in jest. Some will certainly appreciate the sentiment. I do agree, a good thread though. I’ll post something about anchors if I think I can add anything. Fair enough, Steve but I lose a bit of my verve when I don’t swear.
  11. Interesting. Previously choked with ivy?
  12. Post a comparison with your 180 when you're up and running please. Include which bars and chains you're using. I suspect your 180 is on 3/8 picco.
  13. I'd check with his wife first.
  14. Google showing just over three hours from Margate, Dover, Hastings or Brighton to you. Leave at five, back in for seven. He can buy all the blondes he wants when he’s running a successful rot detection empire.
  15. You got an offer of what you wanted, for free, within an hour of asking and with the substantial bonus that the guy happens to be probably one of the best connected blokes in the UK arb industry. For the sake of a few hours in the car and, at the absolute most, £100 of fuel, you’d be mad to turn it down. Reconsider.
  16. The worst chipper I ever used was a Jensen on a twin axle 8x5 flatbed trailer base. Your single axle would be better but probably still shit.
  17. Good idea but surely the head will go loose when the wood dries.
  18. If Dewalt battery saws were good, people would use them. Quite a few are using Makita battery saws (and petrol saws).
  19. There have been a few misunderstandings in this thread caused by terminology mismatches (especially SRT vs single anchor) but the main problem is nobody can be arsed to read your very long posts that argue the toss about absolutely everything. I speak as a quite patient theorist, someone happier than most to argue the toss and you're even tiring me out. I can't even remember what this thread is about.
