  1. I was in the building industry before i retrained and got into our industry. I have experienced first hand how the employment agencies ruined the trade for jobbing builders and now seem now to have gone one step further and pretty much source their staff from eastern european countries. Surely, in our industry, which is in comparison, small, agencies are not needed. I'll say it again! All we need is a governed database on a site such as Arbtalk !
  2. I fail to see how this kind of business makes the industry more professional:confused1: The guys who use this site are, on the whole, pro's or guys looking to become pro's. The Cowboys out there are unlikely to use an agency in the first place! How many freelance climbers sign a contract?? All we need is an easily accessable database of freelance climbers, groundies etc I would imagine an employment agency would be a complete minefield to set up, but good luck, i just think there could be a better way.
  3. Hi mate 38 would definately be worth doing. I'm over in Gloucestershire, dont have anything for you at the moment but if you can let me know your number then i'll certainly keep you in mind. Most of our work is in the Cotswolds, dont know if its to far for you??
  4. It would make more sense to me for there to be a section on arbtalk which is a database for freelance climbers etc. I'd happily pay to register on the database, anyone who used me from the database could leave a review for others to see, it could be sorted into regions, freelancers could list any kit available to them etc. Just a thought! Personally, i dont like the idea of Agency's taking over the freelance side of our industry.
  5. You're welcome to come over and do a bit with us, we've 70+t of h/w to fell n extract for firewood. Nothing fancy, site is on a bit of a slope so there's some winching and skidding involved. Not much climbing on at the mo, so we're into the forestry for the time being. The site is about 8 mile from Evesham, not far from Broadway.
  6. Still sounds like a bloody minefield! Open to interpretation, i reckon its needs to be put plainly in black n white by the insurers!
  7. I totally see where you're coming from, i agree, in the most part of it, but this thread should be carried on elsewhere, Chris's vacancy has been trashed by us all! Maybe i came across wrong, i still think that self employed should have their own insurance. Incidently, i dont and wouldnt use the bloke again, maybe its 'more fool me' for giving someone some work and taking their 'so called' experience at face value. Guess i'll live n learn!
  8. Its peace of mind should anything happen, employed or not if there's a weekend cash job to be done at least you're covered should anything go wrong. It's not expensive, far less expensive than if you needed it and didn't have it. Think of it like car insurance!
  9. Fair comment, but in the real world, unless you're standing watching him every second, it doesn't work like that. Therefore, they should have insurance. Tickets don't mean you can do a job. Its easy to be judgemental, management involves a hell of a lot more than hiring n firing, my situation was dealt with as i felt was appropriate.
  10. How long till Steve jumps in and says we've gone off thread! Basically it sounds like a minefield!
  11. My opinion, for what is worth, is that all freelance climbers should have their own insurance. I recently had a guy working with me who's attitude to insurance was one i did not share. He seemed to think that my insurance was there as a back up for his incompetence. It's difficult to gauge a climbers ability until they're doing the job, by which time it could be to late! Thankfully, in my instance, there was no damage caused but this was purely more luck than judgement on his part! I occassionaly freelance and always state that i am insured. If i am subbing or freelancing i feel better knowing that i have my own policy, should the worst happen. If someone is self employed then why would they not be insured? Best of luck finding someone Chris!
  12. What about accomodation? It aint cheap out there!
  13. I was working in Wolverhampton a few weeks back and had a local lad working with me. He is very keen and a cracking fella, who really wants to get into the arb industry. Daryll was a pro cyclist until an injury ended his career, he now wants to become an arborist. He has all the makings of a fantastic climber, he's keen, extremely hard working and would be an asset to any company that would take him on. He is currently trying to get funding for his tickets but if this doesn't happen he'll pay for his own. I only wish he lived closer to me and i could take him on, but as i'm in Gloucs it's not practical! If there are any companys in the Midlands looking for a hard working decent honest lad then this is your man! PM me and i'll put you in touch with him
  14. According to the mrs, bicarb of soda in hot water. Put enough water in a bath to cover the rope, bicarb and leave it to soak for a while. Rinse the rope of well with cold water after. Apparently the bicarb attacks mould and mildew. Haven't tried it myself but she sounded convincing
  15. RN from 90 to 95. Gulf, NI, West Africa and some other places. Diver/coxswain RIB
  16. Stop getting down on your knees!
  17. I carry a little one burner stove in the van, asda do them for next to nothing and they can supply unlimited fresh brews! Flasks are history in my book, I only break the bloomin things! There's nothing more satisfying than a fresh outdoor brew, makes every wet break seem like an adventure! lol
  18. I have a Fransgard, double drum, 3t per drum. Its fairly quick, has a good height on the butt plate for skidding but it wont handle large stuff! Ok on medium sized logs though. Overall i'm fairly impressed with it. Not a patch on an Igland but then it wasn't Igland money!
  19. My wife might be interested, i'll have a word with her, she did a Forest Schools course a couple of years ago. She's a web designer too, although currently on maternity leave!
  20. Hopefully its all sorted now, we'll see this week. Thanks everyone
