  1. still using mine, has unloaded several cube of firewood and i'm still well pleased with the purchase!
  2. the japa 100, equivalent to the eagle, is what we upgraded to from ye olde faithful flat belt drive table saw. took the plunge for the 100 for several different reasons, safety, portability, convenience of setting up, and the splitter feature. as has been said it's a fantastic first step into higher production and so long as you know the limits of the machine, particularly the corkscrew, you'll be pleased with the move, whether to the hakke or the japa. we have now moved to a japa 700 run alongside the homemade splitter in my avatar, and now enjoy greatly increased productivity to what could be done on the japa 100. step by step:001_smile: i'm not suggesting you buy it GT due to the distance involved, but i'm looking for £500 for my japa 100 without blade because i had to pinch the blade for the 700! i had it new in 2003 and paid £1000 + VAT for it and i would say it's done less than 100 Good luck! Sorry forgot to mention mine is PTO
  3. would you not be covered by having the little "do not climb on timber stacks" signs set in prominent places? perhaps accompanied by "private land keep off" and "please do not stray from the public footpath"
  4. i wouldn't give it a second thought tbh, i guess i'd try not to have too much in one load but it's just one of those things. cest la vie
  5. aha, thank you xerxses, obviously all of us could have looked at wiki or similar for the answer, but it is so much nicer to hear individual interpretations and opinions. can't say i've noticed this issue when burning alder though, i'll pay more attention next time!
  6. certainly the 3 rail fencing looks great and would be perfectly cattle proof, i might even have to replace some of my dilapidated barbed wire fencing with it!
  7. It's ask a stupid question time!! What's sintering?
  8. That sounds to me (the layman...) like a pretty good price for processor chains steve, presumably you can sharpen them too? looking at £300 + VAT for a new 27" TCT, but they do last for ages
  9. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8USEfhnrXU&NR=1&feature=fvwp]YouTube - ‪New Holland T7050 op 2 wielen Trekkerweb.nl‬‏[/ame] whoa nelly!
  10. round wood with the bark still on wont last only a couple of years, not sure how sawn rails would fare, the timber lasts very well when in contact with water, but i would say you'd be better off keeping the alder for firewood and finding some sweet chestnut for you fences...
  11. see how that firewood table burns... alder is not the densest wood by a long way, but it actually makes a fantastic firewood. as usual, get it dry and keep it dry.
  12. i don't remember seeing them in my childhood days, but we seem to get them every year here now. had a socking great nest hanging from the roof of an old barn here about 6 years ago, was approx 2ft across by 3ft long, had that one dealt with as was too close to the house for comfort... got some pictures somewhere of the damage they do to young ash in particular, will have to dig them out... not been stung yet (touch wood!) but come across them every day, caught one in my UV fly killer last year, was zapping away for several minutes, the smoke and the smell is horrendous!
  13. Hiya, that's freaky, only this evening I was looking through all my private messages and remembered about you!

yeah, was cutting willow today, mixed with conifer this year. looking for £80 a cube when it gets cold again. still cutting kindling for next season too.

when are we going to get some rain??? think hay is going to be short again this year, a goodly lot of mine has gone to seed already and only about knee height, and the lighter soils look like they've been sprayed off! bad news.

invitation for coffee and chat still stands when it suits.

  14. failing to prepare is preparing to fail:001_smile:
  15. make sure you cut it to log size whilst still green, one name i remember hearing for it is "axe-breaker".... says it all really. i also understand it was used for the manufacture of wooden gears in early industry, proper hard stuff:sneaky2:
  16. i'll go with that, especially since it's the first time in all my tender 26 years that i've ever heard one, really nice that he/she is hanging around too:001_smile:
  17. thinks i might have a resident, still singing away, got 2 different owls calling tonight also. gotta love the country:001_smile:
  18. home made, just popped out for a ciggie and noticed some thing different, took me a moment to work out what i was hearing! i think it was in the apple trees at the end of the field behind my house
  19. defo not a blackbird, they don't sound that pretty!!
  20. hmmm, a nightingale you say, seems logical, why didn't i think of that...
  21. OK, I know this is a bit weird as this video is just darkness... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHV9vAWMAas]YouTube - Night birdsong[/ame] BUT, turn your sound up... My knowledge of birds is very limited, but I know I've never heard birdsong like this at 10.30 at night in April. Any ideas what bird this is? I don't even think I've heard it during the day!
  22. I've just spent the afternoon hand sharpening two old axes one a Brades 4 1/2 lb and the other an Elwell 1 3/4lb. I found it a most satisfying experience to bring these previously chipped and neglected tools back to their former glory. I do like an edge you can shave with:sneaky2: Also immensely satisfying to swipe through 2" thick branches with the Elwell effortlessly, I think these two will make a great start to the arsenal for greenwood working tools already being expanded by Cracker who is kindly making me a froe and drawknife!
  23. i picked up a vauxhall brava, single cab with 110,000 on the clock and a knackered rear diff 2 years ago for £1250, paid that again for a recon diff and not had any probs since, reasonable at towing, got through places i expected to get stuck in and 500 to the tankfull on light duties. also got truckman top which i nearly sold but am glad i didn't cos i do find occasional use for it!
  24. i couldn't understand why it didn't die first time either, then i figured i'd make sure to hit it in the head!
  25. HOW SAD! i managed to complete it but i expected it to display my final score after! somewhere around 14000:blushing:
