  1. Had 14 ton of Ash delivered a few weeks back, some good sticks some bad all at about 10' long. Currently working through the big/good stuff, getting some nice boards out of it, up to about 90 cu/ft of 30mm, 40mm & 50mm thick with decent widths.

  2. Don't be tempted to use a cheaper blade and especially don't use the ones that come with the mill. I've used ripper37 from Blademaster Stephen Cull for the last 3 years and never had a problem, every batch of blades fit as well as the previous with no need to realign.
  3. Because of the humidity you'll be hard pushed to air dry timber in the UK below 16% m/c
  4. Are you talking length of bed or width of cut because there'll be a fair bit of flex on a cutter block thats 51" long that and 51" wide is an unusual measurement.
  5. To be fair the bushes on the uprights don't make a great deal of difference, mine have been knackered for the last year. Check the condition of the belt on the follow wheel if that is uneven or has flat spots that will affect the bandsaw. When you leave the machine for more then a couple of days it's best to slacken off the tension otherwise a flat spot will appear on the follow wheel.
  6. Here's a couple of pics of Ash and Oak boards I've done on my 130 The quality of finish you'll get depends a lot on condition of blade and the feed speed
  7. I've got some 6yr air dried square edged English oak boards 10' long, 12" - 20" probably a bit thin for you as they are about 2.25" thick
  8. Had an enquiry for a beech tree to be milled in Rickmansworth, anyone interested in the job?

  9. It's got so wet on Saturday whilst milling Larch I had to make a slight alteration to keep the operator (me) dry!
  10. I've had an enquiry from a guy in Wokingham who has a stack of fallen trees that he wants milling. Ash, oak, yew (he thinks) some 1.3m in diameter, some images below that he's sent. As per normal if you're interested drop me a DM and I'll pass your details on.
  11. Last time I saw Sweet Chestnut trees that size was in the Wye valley near Bigsweir, there's a row of about a dozen beautiful trees, couldn't help thinking they'd be a bugger to mill!
  12. Sure was, knackered one blade when hit first find, turned the lump over to mill from other side with new blade 3 cuts down that blade found the other 3 nails. Still ended up with some cracking boards and have the remainder of the tree to do, there was a good 3" of growth covering the nails, don't know what they were holding but whatever it was they sure didn't want it to fall off with that number of nails used!
  13. Yesterday spent milling Walnut from a farmyard
  14. Thanks, this is the bottom section I'm chainsaw milling today, 10' long 30" diameter. Thinking of table tops so I'll be slapping at 2"
  15. I bought me a Yew yesterday so I started milling top sections of trunk today, bottom 10" tomorrow with chainsaw mill as to big to fit on bandsaw mill. Lovely bit of grain
  16. Not minted mate but like 95% of the UK population just uneducated when it comes to timber
  17. Yeah, I thought that. Looked at the price of walnut rifle stock the other day, think I might mill a 3" slab out of the middle of this and set it aside. Views and thoughts of this plan welcome.
  18. Infused ash means an extra £5 per cu/ft
  19. I decided to mill up this short (5') length of walnut the other day. Despite being felled some 2 years ago I was pleasantly surprised at what I found inside.
  20. Thanks for the info. Did you get that trailer certificated?
  21. I tend to use thinner stickers (5/8") for Oak to let it dry slower but thats just me. As for drying time I was always taught a year per inch of thickness plus a year. I've just unsticked and square edged some 1"& 2" Oak boards I've had drying for 5yrs, the boards are lovely and flat.
  22. How long is the whole rig from hitch to tailboard, thinking of extending my mill.
  23. Thanks, she had a good innings at 95 but all the same you're never ready for it. As for the Ash, that's a great help, I know what offer to go in with. I know it's not great stuff but some of it's worth milling and the rest will do for burning. Thanks for your advice
  24. Got first refusal on this lot of Ash stems but what's a fair price to offer, 50-60 3m lengths 12"- 20" diameter. I've got an idea of what to offer but would appreciate a bit of guidance as since my mother died last week brain has temporary gone to mush! Also got first refusal on the Larch but not sure about that yet.
