  1. That's interesting as I'm about to buy another load of Larch, hopefully I'll get a better deal then last year.
  2. I read an article about this time last year that said the price of roadside and standing timber had risen up to 20% on previous years, has anyone noticed a significant rise. For instance, what prices are you paying now for Oak, Ash, Beech or Elm compared to say 3 years ago.
  3. After a start like this the day could only get better, first log, second cut, one knackered blade and one log for the firewood pile. The remainder of the mornings milling went ok, slowly getting back into this work thing!
  4. They were about 28"-30" but I cheated as they were on a site not accessible for the bandsaw mill, so I cut them into 3" slabs with chainsaw mill and then put them on the bandsaw back at the yard. Yes there was a bit of wastage with the chain thickness but better then being ringed for firewood which is what will happen to the rest if I can't get back. As long as you take it steady you should be OK turning them, don't try to do it on your own though, that's the route to serious injury.
  5. Bandsaw milling is easy, the hard part is having a knowledge of different timbers and how to cut them and the best way to cut to get the most from a trunk. A one day course won't teach you those sort of skills that comes from years of practice. Milling trees is as much about listening as it is about watching. I hit milling from the opposite end to most people, I served a 4yr apprenticeship as a furniture maker and then had my own business for 20yrs making and repairing furniture before moving into milling which I've been doing now for 14yrs. The knowledge and skills I gained with machinery and timber usage has set me up well for the milling business.
  6. I maxed out my woodlands mill today got some nice 2" thick oak slabs at 22" wide beautiful grain.
  7. Anyone interested in a milling job near Cardigan/Ceredigion? DM me your details and I'll pass them on.

  8. We have Esse stoves, a Bakeheart for cooking on and an Esse 500 vista in the front room for heat, both easy to light and throw out enough heat to nicely warm our victorinan semi.
  9. You and many others no doubt. I had a HMRC investigation a few years back not the nicest experience and one I would not recommend walking yourself into if you can help it.
  10. Pay cash into personal account then transfer to business has always worked for me, everything gets invoiced so it has to go through the books. As a reminder, this is a public forum and all those suggesting and admitting to hiding away cash from the prying eyes of HMRC, you have just openly admitted to fraudulent practices.
  11. I think what happens is grit mixes with the grease and causes the bearing to seize.
  12. Only ever had that problem once, told RobD and he sent new parts straight away. Instructions when new was to lubricate it but that was the problem, grit from the tree stuck in the oil and jammed it up. Since replacing the nose sprocket I've not bothered to oil and have had no problems now for over 5 years.
  13. Work insurance, now that's sounds a good idea. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!
  14. The problem we have in the UK is we don't have the nice straight logs they use for the demo videos in Canada, they make turning logs on the mill so easy.
  15. Yep, no driving, no work. No work, no money. And as self-employed no SSP either!
  16. I've seen those it's only Canada that are selling them before the 6th. I've spoken to Chris the UK rep, he hasn't had any info yet.
  17. Police aren't interested, I've been done three yimes and on first occasion when thieving gits walked off with £7.5k of chainsaws and kit Plods exact words were "it's not something we'd be interested in" Second time £2.5k the words had changed to "it's not something we'd be bothered with" Third time next door neighbour had a got a full hand print as they'd tried to nick their caravan and Plod said we don't send soco out for break ins anymore! So what is the point!
  18. Yes but I ruptured my achilles tendon a couple of weeks ago and I won't be able to drive for about 11 weeks.
  19. Look's a nice bit of timber. I've just opened up an email that came in last night, someone has dropped a couple of elms on their land, wanting to know if I'm interested in buying them, if I can find someone to drive me out there I'll get a look at them next week.
  20. I'll be interested to see the new mill from Woodland Mills to be launched on Monday the all new HM130MAX with a 30" cutting width.
  21. If that piece was made in the 18th century then yes it would command a decent price. A bit difficult to tell from the photo but it looks more like and early piece by Old Charm, Priory or similar in which case it's worth about £50. Like with all things sold at auction, it's worth what 2 people are prepared to bid on it.
  22. I do hope you're taking the p**s because if you paid more then £50 for it you were ripped off
  23. I'm in North Nottinghamshire with a mobile bandsaw mill, details on the website listed below. Patrick
  24. I knew someone would ask that sooner or later. I was playing badminton!
  25. I didn't need surgery, ruptured not snapped
