  1. Wood turners would pay a fair price for that. The rot hasnt quite got that bad yet.
  2. Pics from my house of the smoke. Only about 18 miles from the fire.
  3. Now upto 740 acre of heathland alight. so it has destroyed Upton Heath it is now aiming for Creekmoor Heath and plantation. I wouldn't be surprized if it goes past 1000 acres in the next hour or two but now upto 200 fire fighters. Dorset only has 225 (most of which are retained). The wind is basically acting like a massive bellow. The last big fire we had was Canford Heath and that incinerated 100 hectares of heath in 4 hours. That was in 2006 on a heath only 1/2 mile or so from the main seat of the fire. Here are links of Canford Heath blaze in 2006: BBC NEWS | England | Dorset | Homes evacuated as heath blazes BBC NEWS | In Pictures | In pictures: Canford Heath blaze
  4. The fire was almost under control until 30 mins ago when the wind changed direction and is now aiming for a small (1 km) wide finger of heathland linking Upton Heath with Tower Hill Heath and then Canford Heath. If that goes up the preverbial will hit the fan. This is whats burning Upton Heath Nature Reserve The total are that has the potential to burn is 506 acres or there abouts.
  5. Here is the BBC link. Approx 250 Acres destroyed so far BBC News - Dorset heath fire 'spreading rapidly'
  6. Anyone been down that neck of the woods this afternoon? We could see the smoke from Sturminster Newton. All appliances have gone from Blandford ( 2 18 ton and 1 Land Rover), 2 from stur newton, 2 from shaftesbury (one on stand by at blandford) and what ever is down at Poole. http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9076136.Firefighters_tackle_blaze_at_Upton_Heath/
  7. On a local estate where i shoot they use an Xerion for extracting timber and then chipping the tips for soaking up and binding pig muck to spread out on the fields. Have only seen it once briefly towing a pig feed lorry up a black ice covered hill. What a beast must be 580hp +.
  8. Looks like it. got it on a big HC stump on our boundary with a recreation ground. We were planning on turning it into a habitat stick as was 80% dead, but the rot extended further and was worse than we thought so had to drop it. Will get some shots of the stump as had some brackets at the base.
  9. Got some pics of a Common Oak with a rotten branch. The branch is still alive and has compensated due to the fact of the wood being almost completely gone. I'm thinking along the lines of Inonotus cuticularis as we have alot of it on our sites. It appears to have started to get into the stubs too. Only a small limb so will be keeping an eye on it and not within falling distance of a footpath.
  10. Taken 8/6/11. On very mature Oaks. Most of them have had work done to them (deadwooding and heavy reduction)
  11. We had a big lime ring barked by a local man and his staffy. We pollarded the tree and it is just about survived. Got woody and friends nesting in there at the moment.
  12. Thats tarring the people with the same brush isnt it:lol:. I know several shoots large and small and the foresters and gamekeepers work in harmony with eachother. The foresters are given the shoot dates and the day before they are given the drives that will be done the next day. The foresters and keepers have a gathering pre and post season about works that need doing in various woods and they are carried out at the appropriate time. The one big shoot i beat and shoot on has an estate manager that is both shooting and conservation minded. You dont get many of those now.
  13. Tree rats (squirrels) and hollow leaves would be leaf miner bettles.
  14. 1.4 ton of Merc couple vs 4.5 ton of Merc ambulance lol no contest.
  15. My dad was telling me about a muppet that was on his ass when on a blue light run down a dual carriageway to an RTC at a well known accident blackspot. When he got a roundabout he dabbed the brakes then slammed them on. He felt a little nudge but didnt think much of it. When he got the the accident he noticed a nice big black mark on the lift hinges. Last week they got an insurance letter through asking for money towards the front end damage to a Mercedes CLK. My dad sent a letter back explaining the car was tailgating him on the way to a car accident. He also said that the ambulances have CCTV on the front, back and sides of the vehicles and was recording 24/7. He sent the insurance company a copy of the video with the time and date and speed. The Merc drivers insurance company has now revoked is policy and the police have charged him with hindering an emergency vehicle, tailgating and insurance fraud.
  16. I've been watching them grow over the last few weeks. I've never seen such a big group of them before. Normally only see them in singles and pairs but not in a group of 12 or more.

  18. Ive been chainsawing in a pen wood the day before a shoot. When i stopped at lunch the birds were flooding back in and when i finished for the day they were coming back again. Although they are frightened at first as soon as the noise stops they are back. The keeper was a bit apprehensive for obivous reasons but when i showed him the trees he wanted them down ASAP as they were leaning heavily towards the main track through the estate and had obvious root heave.
  19. Forgot to put some Phallus impidicus that i took today. had a bit of a pong but wasnt too bad.
  20. Seems that way. Not going to do anything to them except deadwood and brace the ones with big ears. And monitor over the next few years.
  21. Taken 5/6/11 First 5 pics taken on a Goat Willow. Obvious die back in crown and slight sink where Gano brackets attach to the bark. 65th pic is on an Ash.
  22. Some more pics of wrinkled Beeches. And a cankered grafted HC.
