Yes i did and nothing was in it or on it. There are woodpeckers nesting but they were on the far side of the river and fully fledged.

On the rounds today i noticed that one of the Willow stems on a Crack Willow bridge had been completely stripped of bark. The top was going limp and decided best option was to cut it down to ground level. Unfortunately i only had a "Gyspie stick" with me so used that to fell it and cut it down to ground level. Was happy with the result.

Did a very quick wildflower survey on a piece of land we cleared of trees about 5 years ago. It was bare soil with lots of stumps so we had a digger come in and remove the stumps and do a light scrap on the top surface to remove bramble and nettle rhizomes. Best find to date is Common Broomrape. It is a parasitic plant completely lacking in chlorophyll that feeds on clovers and other legumes.

Very, very healthy beech. Maybe a bit too much leaf?
Matthew Arnold replied to Matthew Arnold's topic in Picture Forum
Wll keep an eye on it during the summer then if anything crops up. Its got a target (car park and road) within falling distance and its neighbour is showing signs of something too. Shall get pics of its neighbour tomorrow and features of this tree in macro. -
I noticed that one of the beech in our avenue has lots of internal shoots. They weren't there last year. The crown is very healthy (although bit thin on top). No signs of fruiting bodies at the base but sign of something trying to get into one of the butresses (Armillia spp?). Am i right in thinking that a tree with lots of internal stems is in distress?

Not on our land but just round the corner from my house. It seems that everytime we have a gust or two they drop a limb.

Not a clue. I assume its an alien species then.

Had some pretty strong gusts here in dorset but nothing down thus far

Ash with Gano. And ash with annual die back
Matthew Arnold replied to Matthew Arnold's topic in Picture Forum
The union is at ground level and the trunks twist around each slightly but will be keeping an eye on them during the week as we are meant to be in for some "fierce" winds (40 mph +). -
Not a particularly clear picture but found on a oak deadwood stub. We removed the worst of the branch as it was overhanging a footpath. The stub is about 3 foot long and the fungi appeared a couple of weeks back. Any ideas?

Found this twin stemmed Ash with a Gano bracket feeding off one of its roots. The roots are clearly visible and rather long and wide. No obvious signs of die back in the crown. (First 5 pics) The second tree is another ash about 50 metres away. Each year there is about a foot of dieback (previous years growth). The tree has a healthy crown and no fruiting bodies on the trunk or in the crown. (Last 3 pics)

But how can you carry out an adequate bird nest assesment on a conifer hedge that hasnt been cut for 3 months. Without setting up the day before with a notebook and an accurate watch counting the amount of times a species of bird goes into a specific spot.

Tis the season to see Fungi, fa la la la la....

Nope. Got the od wiff but wasnt too bad must have caught it just right i think. -
I've just been helping out looking after 15,000 pheasant poults so i know full well about animal welfare and the correct and incorrect practices. Granted it seems pointless looking after 15,000 as most of them (approx 60%) will be shot. The other 40% or so will be left to go wild for next season.

Oh great time for another lynching.

Taken 20/5/2011. Purple Orchid is Southern Marsh Orchid. White Orchid is Lesser Butterfly Orchid. Not on our site but in piple to become site as part of trailway which is almost ours. Yellow/green pic at end are Wild Mignonette. It wasnt there last year but topped and raked site with quadbike so may have disturbed seed bank.

I wouldnt put a man in prison if it was a misjudgement/accident. I would only report them if it had been done deliberately and without careful consideration of any other wildlife it may affect. He may have scanned the tree for bird nests but thats the problem with woodpeckers they can make their holes so discrete.

Two years ago i saw an ivy clad Leylandii hedge being felled. It was on our boundary and alot of people were very upset. We asked the site foreman if a bird survey had been carried out. We got just "erm" for an answer.
