  1. Nice thick mulch/leaf litter
  2. Another pic possible in a couple weeks? Looks good
  3. Best left on the tree methinks!
  4. Ditto that
  5. This one per chance? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=530628
  6. No worries, it is pretty far removed from woody trees! You're still the tree id don
  7. I thought so, I'll just wind my neck back in!
  8. Aha! Thank you. Now to hunt one down for my wife
  9. I know it as Microspheara (spelling?) alphitoides, but that may be an older/newer name. The mildews are very host specific. In general they cause no lasting damage, reduced photosynthesis and a bit unsightly in the short term.
  10. Sorry, couldn't resist!
  11. Fine looking multizonata does Tony have that one bagged?
  12. I know its a big ask as I don't have a photo yet (was too dark last night!), will get one in a day or so. Not looking for or expecting a positive id, just possibilities. Any suggestions welcomed. Drive past this tree quite regularly and it shed a limb in just moderate wind. Host, whitebeam. Fb appeared at site of limb failure approx 1-2 weeks after tear-out, 6 foot high. It is pure white, soft, didn't bruise immediately but may have after I left, and smells strongly mushroomy. It has the appearance/shape of a young gibbosa but the pores are too small. The exposed decayed wood looked like it was covered in a dense, dry white mycelium, but under a streetlight it was hard to tell. So any suggestions to look into before I go back for pics and a slice? Ta very much...
  13. Hi all, looking for advice/experiences regarding the above-mentioned. I don't currently do these reports as I feel I lack the necessary knowledge. I am looking at the courses run by the AA (with G Biddles books included), Treelife, and the module from Myerscough. I understand that the Myerscough course is the only AMUIG approved course, correct? I am trying to work out if it is worth my while/money in terms of a return from work. I have several questions and would appreciate any answers or comments! 1 does anyone know the cost of treelifes course? 2 does anyone know if there is much demand for these reports in the southeast, and if the AMUIG accreditation is meaningful? 3 cheeky one, what is the going rate for such reports? 4 have you attended any of said courses, how did you rate it in relation to the real world? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance! Ps. If I were to advertise such reports before doing any course, to test the market, would anyone on the Essex Suffolk border want to sub to me? If anyone would rather, feel free to pm or email. Kev
  14. Quality, I could do with one for my neighbour!

    Loler

I know the strop does, presumably the wire loop on the saw body does as well? I don't think I've known one to be checked at previous companies I've worked at.
  16. A fantastic book, very easy reading and easy to understand with lots of pictures. This is what allowed Shigo to teach the non academic arbs so well. In short, this book is excellent even if you've only just started in arb with very little background knowledge of tree biology. I hope there are lots of takers for this...

Excellent response Seriously though, I don't know. Maybe the strop attachment on a top handle saw would?
  18. Treevolution Snowdonia give them a call, Jane is lovely and very helpful, always got time for a chin-wiggle on the phone, Liam and all the others are a vast wealth of experience and knowledge. And yes, you would need pro indemnity insurance to Loler check gear...
  19. Hats off to you Silky, nicely done
  20. That's 6 weeks gone, fantastic reading I really do need your address, or I'll just have to keep it longer
  21. I've wondered that too, another string to the arboricultural bow. I know BTS do training, but couldn't see a cost on their site. I've also no experience on power lines (couple of years railway cutting, does that count?) and wonder if the basic line safety ticket would be a prerequisite? Does anyone know what is involved in terms of travel, pay, locations etc. (A PM would be good if no one is willing to discuss pay publicly) How long does a ticket last? If I can make the course pay for itself I may well consider it... Cheers all
  22. That's the prettiest decay pattern I've seen in a while any ideas on the causal fungi?

    Pruning cuts

Or view/download it from your local library...
  24. Looks rather like Laetiporous, oak stump?
  25. Q1 Is there any point in assigning a category to trees on neighbouring land? Surely regardless of category, if the neighbour/owner likes it, it is a constraint on design. However if it is not protected then what, other than the TO applying a TPO, can stop a developer from severing roots/canopy to the boundary? Q2 If a tree has foundations through its rpa and a butchering of the crown required to build a wall, a removal is recommended as the trees ruined, possibly unstable due to trenching through the roots. Planning may be granted following approval of the retention/removal/pruning works. If the site owner then decides to keep the tree in a state, that's ok. Right? Thoughts please...
