  1. Just a quick note for a guy who I have been dealing with a bit recently. John at Shades of Green, in Warrington. Really honest guy and a pleasure to deal with. Cheapest price on all the kit I have asked him to price (and bought) so far (Including saws, ballistics, stein helmet, chains etc.) He also has Timberwolf tracked & road tow chippers, stump grinders and other plant at dirt cheap prices, I think a 150 road tow is about £60 a day. No website I'm afraid, but contact details below. Moss Lane Nursery Moss Lane Warrington WA4 6UZ 01925 740995 ‎ No connection blah blah blah, just think good service deserves a mention. Sam
  2. Never shot a cat, but the meat damage from a .270 would be huge, do the Cat Commission For Scotland recommend head shooting? PS. Felix, I'm only bantering
  3. "Apparently" a paintball gun works well too
  4. Surely not shooting into the air with a rifle? I think a 20b adequate for that sort of work.
  5. Steady on! Is it one of those specialist papers?
  6. I get subbies in when needed but 75% is me. My work and life balance is good I think. I spend 6 days a week doing something work related at the moment, be it cutting, maintenance, quoting or whatever. I don't not enjoy it, but it is nice to have time to chill out, take the canoe or the dogs out and know I don't have to be doing something in two hours or whatever. Work hard, sail fast and live slow.
  7. Buy a mans bow! Without wheels and things
  8. So if your saw is not in your hand it is secured?
  9. Most of it. Especially fruit tree pruning. Because most of my work is slash bash crash forestry I love a "felco/silky job" without any chainsaws.
  10. Mine is Privately owned assume NS that yours was council?
  11. You might earn yourself some more chocolate
  12. One for the legally knowledgeable (and everyone else). Had a fellow approach me wanting to know what to do with a tree. His next door neighbour has a reasonable (25ft tall) conifer very near the boundary, maybe 2 feet. The tree blocks out light and drops needles (Obviously). The roots are now going underneath the client's garage. He is worried about his foundations, and wishes the tree to be removed, before it damages his property. The neighbour does not want the tree down, I do not think they get on very well. Is there anyway of making someone have a tree taken down, other than saying it is dangerous to people (which it is not)? Cheers, Sam
  13. My fingerhold grasp of old Greek pulled that up(Anthrop - men, morph - outline). Turns out (following googling) that it means attributing human characteristics to animals.
  14. Hullo Chum, thanks for the links. Just read the article. Would be nice to get hold of the actual research, but no matter.
  15. I want to see the film, it might change my mind The "yet to find" part of that sentence is important. It's not arrogant, it's the truth.
  16. I have looked into it for myself, lots Are you saying nothing gets rid of elephant skulls? Porcupines, rats, and I think all of the 11 species of mouse all eat ivory and bone (including skulls) for the mineral goodness it holds. Elephants are funny things. They bury the people they kill, often, and occasionally the living. I am not saying they do not mourn, I am just yet to find any proof, or anyone who worth listening too, that supports the graveyard idea. I haven't seen Tony's footage, so I cannot offer an opinion. Which researchers? Give me names and I will read it. A few people have told me the following story, with minor differences, but enough to make me believe it. George Adamson shot a bull out of herd (ecological). They moved the carcass about a mile after giving the meat away to the tribesmen they left the carcass overnight to find the next morning the herd had tracked them, taken a shoulder and a leg and then returned them to the very spot old tembo was dropped.
  17. I thought you would mean that. As lovely a notion as "the elephant's graveyard" is, sadly it is balderdash with a little piffle thrown in for good measure. Its reason. Imagine you are the first white man. You and your pith helmet spend all your time wandering round looking (and shooting) at heffalumps. But where are the skeletons? Hum. You couldn't miss an elephant skeleton surely? So. It makes perfect sense that they must wander off into the vast sandbox and keel over. People (Enrico Bruhl for one) literally died looking for a great mountain of naturally harvested ivory hidden somewhere in the desert. Sadly, it was, and is, a con. Most elephants die of two reasons. 1) Their teeth wear out. So they die from lack of food. They keel over, anywhere. Its amazing the amount of things that eat bone and ivory, let alone flesh and hide, in the bushvelt. The elephant disappears. 2) The old jumbo gets bogged down in areas they have crossed for many years, they sink, get eaten, and fertilise. The elephant disappears.
  18. Hi John, I know nowt about pellet guns, the bang isn't loud enough for me, but glass I know. For low light work you want something aroung the x50/x56. At that sort of money (As much as you can afford to spend) either hunt around for a second hand Schmidt&Bender, Swarovski, Kahles Etc. Or new look at these two Leupold VX-1 3-9x50 Leupold VX-II 3-9x40
