  1. I was a groundsman and ran a small arb business for around 8 years, then moved north and went into cutting on piece work. I gave up piece work as all decent wood goes to harvesters so too hard to make a living in cocktail sticks and poor estate woods. Arb stuff i find boring and tedious, hedges etc but the money is there! packed up my job in peat bog conservation this friday actually to go back into the woods cutting for a good contractor on a day rate. arb is tiring, forestry is far harder. BUT I love being in the woods and il be working with new forwarders and harvesters not the old osa i was in my previous job. Looking forward to it The arb stuff is fairly simple but the problem with it is people....can i have 3 inches more off etc etc. Nothing beats a coffee sat on a felled tree on a frosty morning in the woods.

    Just bought a second hand dolmar 7900 as my second saw for felling big stuff etc. looking forward to seeing what its like, all the comments about this model have be excellent. If its good i may buy a new one..........only husky i may consider is the 365 or 372 for everyday use but im not convinced by the high prices and low quality anymore

  4. Hello I am just resurrecting this thread as im now in the situation of being a self employed cutter again, working for a contractor on their sites. So technically i don not require PLI as il be covered under theirs? is this correct?? BUT if i went for a contract myself i would require PLI if working alone, as soon as i get help in i require ELI. Yes??
  5. I used to cut the leg off a pair of old trousers and fit that over the chute, bungee cord it on. makes the chip slow a bit and come out in a controlled manor. chutes with flat tops bounce it everywhere, rounded types like the timberwolf ones tend to be less messy.

    Right having had and been around 5 560xps that have had major issues I am considering a change of heart. Not overly happy with husky build quality for their cost. I love the speed/balance but its no good if it works only half the time. Given the choice i would try a dolmar 6100, what is the price of one and also what is the echo equivalent? is this saw capable of forestry felling every day flat out without being in the repairs shop every other week like i have experienced with the 560. I would buy a new saw yearly.......
  7. we work on peat restoration, removal of trees etc. Key is travelling, machine doesn't matter as long as it doesn't sink. we have an old massey 1200 with 1.4m plastic tracks, forwarder on band tracks doesn't really travel well. Dual wheel valtra which is just about ok, Excavators are all on wide tracks and bog mats. If you sink stop dead, get pulled out or you l just make a a bigger mess. Get used to recovery!

  10. ex barony college. yes its going ok for an old machine, electrics are a pain at this age. had the main crane pin sorted. Apart from a radiator hole its not too bad, been doing some long hauls moving straw bales onto a rewetted peat bog, very sticky and its struggled for power with the band tracks on plus the super wet ground! basically works hard when needed, not pretty but does the job!

  13. Are these still available for fitting on the back of tractors?, fell the tree by hand crane load it and it spits it out in specific lengths. I did a search and saw logbaron has one.
  14. The high low switch doesn't do anything in ours, its all on the speed controller rotary switch from standstill to pretty quick. I am struggling with a few problems at the moment. Fixed the oil pressure light and temp gauge, were bare wires touching so engine is good. now I have a problem where the engine keeps changing revs and I stopped it at lunch then it would turn over but not fire, bled it and sprayed wd40 in the intake and it went. So air leak or fuel starvation I think. When the engine is running well its fast but it bogs right down sometimes and ur crawling along. Sure its fuel, there is a breather on the front of the injector pump leaking so I need to sort that. I'm currently moving hay bales onto a peat bog, about a 2 mile roundtrip so been running flat out all day to do 4 loads, plus the leaking rad isn't helping, runnng with bonnet open as it drops the temp by 10 degrees, gets very hot when suns out. Also one of the batteries keeps corroding its clamp then snaps which then cuts the leccy so u stop, its the short positive between the two batteries, not sure how to prevent it! The rebuilt crane is brilliant to use now apart from all this.
  15. our osa does the same with the oil pressure light but seems to run sweet, oil level good, not checked the sender though.

  17. Think it was morooka, cautrac had 10 second hand for 150 each and around 300 for some new ones. But they are old stock, there is a new type now I think. Yeah basically well expensive!

  19. It does look a useful machine, I worked with a one of those mini forwarders once, name escapes me and that amazed me how much he got out! I have looked into dumper undercarriage prices, new rollers are 300 odd quid each. Quoted 40k plus for a dumper with 1.2 m tracks, basically they remove the undercarriage and start again. I have been talking to ecotracks and end of this summer they are bringing out some wider bandtracks to 1.2 m exactly what we need. As for some of the sites we do its cut peat areas with deep layers of spahgnum moss and bare peat, and peat is 90% water anyway so it is just water really! Big machinery does nt fare well usually and the diggers are always on bog mats. I really believe there is a market for a commercially produced low ground pressure forwarder that doesn't cost 50 k plus. After using forwarders and small tracked machines I would never bother with tractors unless in bone dry conditions as the ones I ve worked with were stuck mostly on about to get stuck!
  20. I'm assuming that you use it on a tree surgery day rate? On forestry piece work rates you not get enough out to make it pay. Def has its place though, the ground doesn't look too awful there. Were looking at 4 foot wide band tracks on our 11 ton forwarder for peat work, those dumpers don't travel as tracks are too thin, they go straight down! To get wider pads on dumpers you have to massively adapt the undercarriage, 800 mm pads on a 11 ton dumper is max standard, good enough for normal wet ground though.
  21. I'll agree with electrical issues! The relays seem to go funny and ocillate so you have to tap them till they fail. Had trouble with crane not slewing, turns out it was a dodgy plug behind the cab where all the wires meet. Very few mechanical problems, crane is being rebuilt as that was very worn. As for the engine, good old perkins smokes like goodun as most do, injectors make no difference. They are rattly smoky things but seem to go on for ever! nice to see another one working as it should
  22. Check the electric plug behind the cab and the spool valve electrics, all seem vunerable to weather, cover it all in grease!
  23. For transport, take out the 4 rear bolsters, grab one of the frames and pull, the rear section will fold up just at the middle of the rearmost wheel to make it shorter. Took me ages till I found that out!
  24. hmmm to be honest I don't know, its not here at the moment so I cant look for a dash light! never had the need for them so far so either its standard locked. I know you shouldn't drive them on the road for long due to winding the diffs up as they cant slip very much like a series land rover so they must be locked. when I get the machine back il look in the manual. after driving the osa with tracks and without I would not bother without them! they are brilliant. im sure this applies to all model though!
