  1. hmmm i agree,,harvester all the way!! as a cutter you have to stack as well??? cant be right..........ever tried to pick up a decent sawlog or bar??? hmmm also on a saw all day you can cut 10 tonnes plus easily but with the cost of fuel is it worth it! love the camping idea but id not fancy weeks of camping with possibly no shower!! as a side note the cutter will lose money in tonnage due to the weight loss of timber as it dries in the weeks before its extracted as well!! id love to have a few weeks cutting like in the old days tho!!
  2. yeah that was my first thought but i thought id post here first as some farmers can be very odd about phonecalls like that!!! ha ha
  3. ok thanks...its worth a shot then, had saw apart before so il have a crack at it!
  4. how many guys and gals on here hire a yard??? i would like to do some of my own firewood as i have spent ages cutting for others but i know i can make so much more myself even with just an axe!! now my problem is id only want to do it 2 days a week and i have nowhere to do it......so id ideally need a yard/field and everyone i know who has a firewood business already runs it from either a big house with land or as a side. I cant see hiring a yard for 80 squids a week is in any way profitable!! i am currently in penrith and cannot find anywhere even advertising yards or land for rent at sensible prices..ie less than ny house rent!!! I hate to say it but is it a case of having money to make money?????
  5. i have a an old 044 and the compression is low but the rest is in good nick...so is it an easy job to swap rings and is it worth a go since they are not that expensive??? i have a 357 as well which i prefer really so id ideally like another husky but i have no money right now for the change so il stick with what i have!
  6. well everything apart from the engine is 1955 original, ie chassis/ bodywork and the rest is pre 1965 series 2 upgraded bits!!! ha ha and i agree with the jap thing above they are now cars...not work vehicles!!!
  7. if it leaks oil then you fill it up then its always got clean oil in it..........as for sunroofs are you water soluable????? its only water, tip....open sunroof, smear with vaseline then shut and dont open it again...........ha ha and they had a problem with disco sunroofs, if you get it replaced at a cheap garage with a 2 year warrenty on it all you have to do is take it back keaking every year for a ew one....
  8. hmmm seems that we have a land rover winning so far...cheap parts, easy to fix and can tow more than other pickups!! love the 130.....nice!! as for towing i towing a fully loadsed fuel artic up a hill in the snow with the 86" in front of the police who were doing nought.........hows thats for illegal towing!!!! cleared the road though!!
  9. ah alas no im not but i know who you mean on one of the other forums!!! id love that series its awesome!!! hmm having looked at that pic i posted i ve noticed it was chriatmas as i was running flashing tree lights on the light bar........... hmmmmm:lol:
  10. ha ha mine dont get roasted as the croutch has a hole in it for airflow...shame it fills with sawdust though!!
  11. Having been about a while and seen many differnet businesses what do you prefer to use??? from what i ve seen.... the old sherpas were awesome but slow but never failed on a hill but too old now. the ldvs seem to be used a lot but are god awful in every way......... Transits are ok but rust like mad and due to high reving engines are woeful on wet grass even! unimogs are not cheap but good id love one... the new mitsub L200 is too light for towing, rear springs are way too soft and its too car like and plastic to last 5 mins......powerful but back wanders about when towing. The old nissan d21 was great as i had one....reliable but slow but low so easy to load!! as is the old L200 and hilux!! New hiluxs and nissan navaras seem way to tarty...look too flash for turning up to job...oh hes making too much money but you would nt use it for work either...... Well im a land rover man myself having had: 1988 hi cap with a 3.9 perkins diesel....lasted 3 years, a gearbox a year cos of the torque!! was noisey but pulled anything and was really spacious! 1988 110 van 200tdi....should nt have sold it! was great and even drove it to croatia and back! Now i run a 1955 series 1 86" hardtop with a disco 200tdi on veg oil!!
  12. All ive ever worn over the 10 years in the industry is the sip types a and c and they are fine and hard wearing and dont get melted by exhausts like the stihl ones..... all are hot in the summer!!
  13. hmmm good question, guy i used to work for did nt need one as he had me.................but it is so much more effcient using machines, time saving and body saving!!
  14. Hello thought id better post up as a newbie at last!!! my background is that i started working for a tree surgeon in leighton buzzard down south when at work experience in upper school and i did this while doing a levels. I then went to sparsholt college in hampshire and did an hnd in lowland forestry management for 3 years. After this i went back home and worked for a while for a tree surgeon while doing my own jobs as well using his yard and collected some big saws an alaskan sawmill, rebuilt several land rovers during this time which lasted around 8 years...how time flies. Then last year i decided to stop tree sugery due to ripped shoulder tendon and general body falling to bits and came up to penrith cumbria to top my hnd up to a degree......having done that im now working as a conservation ranger at center parcs and on days off i do some logging for a guy here. Still got a husq 357xp and an 044 but sold all the other kit...i regret that now, miss my 3120!!! my choice of transport is a 1955 series 1 land rover with a discovery tdi, various series 2 parts, RR diffs and super powerful pto winch. Run her on veg oil as well..save a bit of cash from the robbing gits!!! When i finally get some cash together again im tempted to start a firewood business as all i need is a trailer and a yard/feild and order some wood in!! we shall see, not like i ve never done this type of work before!!! Oh and i love big timber felling and i have a super soft spot for winches......... So...HELLLLLOOOO guys!!!!
  15. This is my beast!! a proper truck, none of this jap crap!! im a conservation ranger at center parcs and do logging as well. Shes a 1955 series 1 land rover running an intercooled discovery 200tdi engine, a few series 2 parts, eiberspasher diesel heater for the winter and a pto winch.....most useful!!! you know it makes sense sell your new "suv" family car pickup and go for something that will last another 54 years!!! ha ha ha!!!
  16. brilliant...i know theres a few harvesters and forwarders working on the lowther estates as its all rented off them by center parcs, my no. is 07834036376 and im only after part time stuff. Thanks a lot this may be of great help!!
  17. no i dont, i ve only been up there for a month an i basically show visitors around and teach kids about woods , wildlife etc!! do you know if hes after any part time work?? very experienced in logs!!! did it for years!
  18. I am based in penrith and am working 3 days a week at center parcs as a conservation ranger. I have a degree in forestry management and was self employed as a tree surgeon for 8 years which i gave up to follow my dream of forestry work!! currently im am dying of boredom and need extra work on mondays, fridays and weekends to help top up my wage!! I have lots of arb experience, but not a climber. Must be based not a silly distance from penrith, i have a land rover (1955 vintage) with pto winch and a couple of saws, id love to do some felling for a bit really! Anyone got any contacts or looking for anyone?? Thanks for your time, Richard
