  1. I entirely agree with you and Innooff the Red ,the trouble is, some of those that need the most help are beyond help because they are such know alls. May be a bit of a generalisation but sadly I do not think I am far of the mark. It is a bit of a strain for some customers to say gooday yet alone ask for advice on how to light a fire properly. "How dare you suggest I do not know how light a fire,it is your logs which are the problem"!!!
  2. Sales not helped by a new guy on the block doing 1.3 cu mtre seasoned hardwood logs for £80,compared to most of us charging £100.

Some bulk trucking companies have old roll over sheets available.
  4. One day if a certain type of customer asks me, " what type of wood is it ", I am going to say "firewood"!!!
  5. Thanks guys glad it is not just me, that is an interesting point you make Hodge, had not thought of that before ,as our old cottage has some doors that do not fit too well!!!
  6. Is anyone else of the opinion that some of your customers need educating on how to light a fire or woodbuner.I Have one or two that say the wood I deliver does not burn very well ,yet when I test burn some myself there is no problem with it. I am sure a lot of people put a couple of firelighters in the fireplace/woodburner,and then put too big a logs on before their is any heat or as I say bottom in the fire, instead of using kindling wood as well followed by small split logs, THEN the bigger logs when the heat is there.
  7. As I have not had any real response to above????:confused1:
  8. How are you getting on with your LogPro-FREE Biomass Firewood Kilns? Are they performing as well as you expected.
  9. I agree with you entirely, even more so since scum broke in to my shed.My problem is ,there is a bridleway litterally along side it.
  10. Nowadays with all the different forms of social media e.g Twitter,Facebook etc, and the internet via your own website, I would like to know which ones you use to advertise your logs and kindling. We usually put an ad in the local paper a few times through the winter months as well as local parish magazines. Not having children I am pretty ignorant of using Twitter and Facebook, and then there is "Gumtree" and "Preloved (sounds intersting:001_smile:). So can some of you younger ones enlighten me on using social media for advertising. I have put a thread on The Farming Forum , "IT"section asking for advice on website construction, and had a lot of feedback so far. At 63 ,I need to do some catching up on the above
  11. Has anyone had experience of changing the gear selector spring,on MF390 12/12 Shuttle gearbox,I believe it is big job,and that is putting it mildly,as the gearbox has to be stripped down!!!!
  12. I am considering selling coal ,as a an add on to selling logs. Just wondering if many of you sell coal as well as firewood, so that one is offering a full service to older aged customers, that have small open fires in council houses and small cottages, who cannot afford to install a wood burner.
  13. Does the idea of loading multiple knotty beech /oak rings, of say 20"/24" diameter by 10" long on to say a Posch 30ton splitter with hydraulic log lift , and then splitting them through a 12 way knife really work, or does it only work with straight grained logs ,please be honest. Thanks to anyone who has tried the idea successful or otherwise.
  14. Thanks for all your replies to a very basic thread, but it is only since I recently have been handling larger Beech that I have realised it does not season like Ash, hence the reason for the thread.
  15. Please can you explain more. It all comes down to economics of transport etc but perhaps I am missing your point. There is another one about 6ft diameter by 13ft long dated about 1709,for logs. Lots of wood but lots of work all to go up in smoke after all those years.
  16. Thank you all . Jon I will contact the Forestry Commision for tables booklet tomorrow.
  17. Thank you, the wonders of this forum:thumbup:
  18. How do I work out how many cu mtrs there are roughly , in a wind blown beech tree trunk 12mtr long and rough average diameter 75cm ,for once it is a nice straight trunk. but on a bank:thumbdown: Thank you for any suggestions.
  19. Surely selling by weight is not very wise, as one could get in to serious trouble with tradings standards,if you say it is a tonne load and a customer then says please can we weigh the load at weighbridge down the road, and the load turns out to be over or under weight. All commodities even of the same type weigh differently. If you get a 29tonne capacity truck come for a load of grain one does not just fill it level full and then say,to the driver there is 29 tonne!! The driver will be watching his weigher and TELL YOU when there is 29tonne on his truck however full you may think it is.
  20. How do I season large diameter Beech Butts? Thank you for any tips/suggestions. Nigel
  21. Approximately, how much a day, should I charge a competent forestry contractor for hiring my forwarding trailer/crane wtih 150 hp tractor to pull it,he supplies his own diesel? Also how much a day for same unit WITH operator? How much a day for the hire of 40ton log splitter , machine only? Thanks in advance for any appox charges?
  22. Has anyone ever made a temporary shed out of scaffolding pipe for the frame, covered with corrugated tin secured with U Bolts. I have a large stack of wood away from my main yard/shed. I am thinking of ways to build a temporary shed that I can back my processor under cover and pick up truck so wood does not get soaked when loading up. Suggestions please, thanks in advance.
  23. Drax power station have no problem with importing wood pellets from Louisiana to fuel the power station, so they must have overcome "The Pitfalls Of Importing". !!!! The article in one of the Sunday paper supplements a few weeks ago made interesting reading.
  24. Now the rain has set in I need to get kitted out with some very robust wet weather clothing for FORESTRY ,suggestions please? So much to choose from at APF,BUT BUT,which do you find is really water proof and ideally breathes. I do not care what it looks like I just need it to keep me dry. I know most of it makes us sweat from inside out,so we feel wet and cold when we stop.
  25. I wish to contact contractor that has a splitter , cone or horizontal ,that will split knotty beech butts that are up to 4ft diameter and some a bit larger dia, roughly a metre long. Butts located Cirencester Glos Area.
