  1. I know it has been asked before, does Alder burn O,K? I ask because I had a load of cord wood in to day and the vendor said it was a mixture of Ash and Alder, unfortunately it is predominatley Alder. It has been stacked at roadside for about nine mths and it is mainly about 10"to 12"diameter. Thanks
  2. Just wondering if any body has had good and bad experiences with Baltic imports, regarding quality of wood and the financial side e.g paying for it and then NO wood turns up !!! Still a great believer in "If something is cheap,it is cheap for a reason".
  3. Thanks for that, sorry for the delayed reply. How long has it lasted in your situation?
  4. Hi Duffryn, what is the name of the breathable cover, sounds a good idea. Thanks
  5. I know you will all think my thread a bit basic!! BUT in the past I have stacked cordwood 2mtrs high or more due to lack of space and not covered it. BUT I am now wondering if I should stack it a mtr high and cover it as I now have more space. Do you cover your cordwood ? When I say cord wood I mean lengths of fire wood (2mtr,2.5mtr ,3mtr) long, seasoning to be turned in to logs.
  6. Quite agree,I can quite often find something to cover the load, in there garage (full all sorts) if they let me have a look . Can't believe how impractical SOME customers are when it comes to weather!!!
  7. I quite agree,BUT the "new life style woodburning stove user " does not see it like that. Hope you agree, thanks for your reply.
  8. Do most of you still deliver logs if it is pouring with rain? I am sure many of you deliver drier logs than me (25%plus"),but do you still deliver your really dry logs to customers when it is pouring with rain ,unless they can be tipped in a dry garage etc? Great to go to the effort of delivering dry logs, and then the customer lets them get soaked, then SAYS the logs delivered to me are soaking wet !!!
  9. Jon,The Beech trees had been down 12/18ths or so before I moved them, but as you know only small diameter branches dry out much, especially as these had been shaded by standing trees. As said before I find some of the spelted trunk just shatter to nothing!! I am sure you have the same problem.
  10. I have some 1mtr + diameter x 2mtr long Beech Butts max, in my yard, that have been there for approx 2yrs. If we split the trunks down in to billets now,Nov, will they dry out much by next Feb,as long as I cover the top of the stacks of billets. Would split the billets quit small to aid drying. Any replies much appreciated.
  11. Are any of you getting requests for mini logs for small wood burning stoves,e.g 8"long logs, split so small that they are almost like large kindling wood !!!
  12. Thank you all, at least I will have a chance to improve my chain sharpening!!!
  13. Which type of chain is beat for cutting dry, knotty (3yr seasoned) ash, beech ,oak rounds about 12" thick, seems like cutting steel!! Contract Job.!!! Thankyou.
  14. Thankyou . It is a really sad situation.
  15. One thing we will never know is how many thieves are watching all our threads to get to know about us,be careful. The above applies to all forums whatever business one is in.
  16. Which older Ford tractors( 8340 era and slightly beyond) ,about 130 hp, ideally 40kph , are good for pulling a forwarding trailer, that has a chassis capacity of 10 tonnes . Any suggestions etc would be much appreciated, thankyou.
  17. . How do the Aussies etc deal with this? 30C is pullover weather for some of them! Great question ,lets hope you get some,"SENSIBLE",answers as joking aside it can be a serious problem.
  18. So the "New Generation "so say computerised chainsaw engines cannot self adjust for hot /cold weather??
  19. What length do you split you billets, just started splitting them and doing them 38" long for 4, 9 1/2" long logs ,o.k we will of course have some shorter lengths. Just wondering what length the rest of you do them .Excuse the extremely basic question.
  20. Do very high temps ,like today, sometimes make it difficult to start your chainsaw ,whatever make you use,or is it just my imagination. If they do is there a way round it ,thanks.
  21. Showing my ignorance , what does "8 pin rims on the first two mean" Thanks for your reply
  22. Are their lighter weight chainsaw protective trousers etc for warm summer weather? If you use summer weight protective trousers what do you think of them.
  23. Sure this has been asked before, but which size bar/chain do you forestry guys end up using the most in your daily work 13",15" etc,and what size power unit. Weight is effort, so I am sure you use the smallest/lightest you can, especially if your are working in ExtremelySteep woodland. Not to bothered whether you say you use Stihl or Husky. Thanks for any advice .
  24. Which Silky pole saw do you professionals use, as I am considering purchasing one. Mainly for lopping of branches that hang low down and can do damage to the tractor(which I have on hire for a month) cab, lights ,mirrors exhaust pipe etc. As you know some branches can bow down from quite a height and can soon do a few quids worth of damage. I did not know where else to put this thread, so have put here.
  25. Is there much of a market during the summer, for small logs for Chimenea garden stoves or whatever you call them. Do any of you promote logs for them during the summer. Thankyou
