  1. A landowner has kindly said I can use their Botex forwarding trailer/crane unit,to move some wind blown.I would appreciate any basic tips on using one for the first time. I do not wish to tip it over!!! Thank you.
  2. Thankyou Brushcutter, for the info. Are there any particular faults that the Valtra 8150/8350 are prone to, reliability of engine/gearbox at 6000hrs plus??
  3. At which time of year do hardwood trees especially Beech and Oak have the most amount and least amount of sap in them.
  4. Is their much difference in build quality and performance of Riko,Posch or Binderberger 30tonne Horizontal splitters.
  5. Suggestions please for an older Tractor 130/150 hp 4wd 40kph with as few electronics as possible for pulling 11ton capacity (how many tonnes of say Beech might I realistically get on it) Forwarding trailer in wood land and hauling same trailer loaded up to 15mls, a few inclines but not really steep hills. Thankyou for any suggestions.
  6. Colesbourne Nr Cheltenham. How much an hour would you charge,or would only do a day rate, later on in the year when it is hopefully drier,we live in hope.!!
  7. I ask the question, as I am in the process of applying for FFIS Grant funding for a forwarder/crane and I am trying to put together some figures together, to justify the cost it. So freely admit I am a NEW BOY to timber extraction, I can not be more honest than that. Thanks
  8. Thank you all for your replies. Very serious, re dangerous, in the wrong hands piece of kit I asked about ,so quite understand, your replies.
  9. Any one know where I can hire a Chain Saw with 5ft bar/chain on odd occasions, for dealing with over size Beech Tree Butts. Would like to hear from any of you who have expereince of breaking down oversize massive trunks on odd occasions.
  10. Moving cut to length Cordwood from where felled to Track/side. Also moving cordwood from trackside to land owners yard, distance variable?? Thankyou.
  11. If a group of us purchase a New Forwarder trailer/crane 11tonne trailer, costing say £25,000, how much an hour or 8hr Day should we be charging to hire it,with 120 hp4wd tractor and operator, or trailer/ crane alone, as trailer/crane would be purchased with its own independent PTO powered hydraulic system . Thanks in advance for any input from your good selves.
  12. Thanks for pointing that out . I should have said 1.2/1.5 mtrs long. Many thanks.
  13. I would like to hear from those of you who have a Binderberger,Posch or any other make etc 40tonne plus pressure logsplitter. How good are they for splitting large diameter (3to4ft) diameter "KNOTTY" Beech,Oak etc trunks 3mtr long. I need a splitter to split 3to4ft diameter trunks into billets, but as these machines are so expensive I would like as much advice as you can give. Thanks in advance.
  14. If you mean engine oil, hydraulic oil etc, "Witham Oils"of Lincoln are the only people I know of,that supply separate tanks. Look at their website.
  15. Thank you arbwork, the crane soon makes a high shed look low,if you know what I mean.Excuse me asking what make/model no. is your crane.
  16. After seeing forwarding trailer/crane video, I am concerned whether the centre apex of the shed that I rent is going to be high enough for me to use crane to stack wood in the shed. Any very rough idea, height of centre of shed would need to be to unload trailer.First section of crane3080,2nd section 2550,extension1570.Openly admit I would be a new boy to trailers/cranes,so big hole in the roof very much on the cards,
  17. Thank you for the information, all makes good sense. I can start to see why there is around £4000 price difference between Kesla204T and 303 even though they have same lifting capacity. I will pay more attention to slewing torque when comparing other cranes. Cheaper to get the machine strong enough for the job at the start, even though financially painful.
  18. I am comparing forwarding trailer cranes,so please can you tell me the significance of the "slewing torque" of cranes. For instance the Kesla 204t and 303 cranes are almost identical in spec except for slewing torque (204t 8,0kNm. 303 13.5kNm). Thankyou for any input as many pounds£ at stake.
  19. Would two beaks stop this problem,or would that be over kill? The Riko one looks just what I am looking for ,but wondered if two beaks would be better to stop wood slidding out the ends, better than one if you know what I mean, bit more of a grab action. I know twice as expensive, but wood sliding of the stack gets me bugged very quickly:cursing:
  20. I need to get either a grapple or beak for moving stacked wood around wood yard. Which is the better tool for the job, especially when wood is so slippery. I like the look of the"Dalen"timber clawbut a bit pricey, but so are grapples. Until now been using plain pallet tines but useless now wood is so slippery. MF820Front end loader on MF390 4wd.
  21. I am wondering how much discount, one can get on new forwarding trailer/crane unit, (8/9 tonne trailer) What other trailer/crane units would you put in the same league as Kelsa.
  22. Thankyou gentlemen for replying, I am extremely sorry to hear that some of you and your close family are suffering more than me. BUT I do realise, from your comments ,that one has to treat the problem of inhaling sawdust particles combined with Chainsaw oil vapour, EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY,WE ALL ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE. At least I do know I am not alone and that I am pleased, I reluctantly posted the thread. Wishing you all a HEALTHY 2014. Nigel. With good health we stand a chance of prospering, but we cannot prosper with out it.
  23. Do any of you, that are processing firewood ,suffer with a continuous mild cold/catarrah through the winter months as I do. If so, do any of you have a suggested remedy, "I KNOW RETIRE TO THE SUN !! :thumbup1: I do try use a mask or helmet with visor ,as I think the minute particles of saw dust that one cannot hardly see may be the problem.
