1. Did any one else see the article in the Sunday Times a few weeks ago, which was about real fancy wood burning stoves? NO MENTION was made about logs to burn in the stoves !!!
2.

Hello Difflock, thankyou for your tips for using a winch safely. From what you say and I would have thought so to,it is a lot safer to use the cable pulley block in the lower position on the Farmi when winching large Beech tree trunk sections, (say 4ft dia by 6ft long ,or is that too long) up a steep slope. To use the top pulley would surely be EXTEMELY dangerous to say the least. Any comments however blunt and to the point appreciated, tractor I have is MF 390 4WD front end loader NOT a 380.

Cheers,

3. Please can you explain to me your meaning of "wind blow". The wood that I will be winching, after being sawn into sensible length/weight, is basically where the top,or large branch from the crown of the Beech tree has snapped off and fallen to the ground. I don't think there are any dangerously still attached to the tree.
4. Thank you all, for your very helpful replies. Obviously one is using what can be a very dangerous piece of equipment, if one DOES NOT follow a lot of your sensible safety advice. Would any of you advise getting the front tyres water ballasted plus full set of front end weights ,if I can find some at a sensible price? I will start off winching smaller pieces, and gradually winch some larger pieces. Unfortunately I am a one man band so one has to be more safety conscious than ever.
5. I am soon going to be using Farmi 501 winch to pull some wind blown Beech trees up a steep bank. Please can you give me some safety issues to look out for as I have not used a winch before . The winch will be on the back of my Massey Ferguson 4wd 380 Tractor. Are Farmi winches pretty good, I would like the 601 but more than I can affored.
6. I am trying to find out, if anyone knows of where I can hire a 5.5 Farmi or similar type of timber winch in Gloucestershire for approx 2 week perhaps. Need one to extract wind blown Beech trees up steep banks, that I have been given. One certainly does not get ought for nowt.
7. Which size winch do you suggest/use,for winching up to 4ft diameter by 6ft Long beech butts(sawn up beech trunk), UP very steep banks. I have an MF390 4W.D drive tractor, with front end loader on it, to put the winch on and I can hire Case 170,if need be. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
8. I have some 18" diameter beech, been cut down for over a year but still very damp.If I cut it to approx 9" long logs, and then split these into roughly 2"to 4" triangular logs how long and store them undercover will they dry out to be saleable in 10 days. It is basically the only wood I have left in stock to sell.
9. Which softwood is best for logs to burn in wood burning stove, and also for kindling.
10. I am wanting to know if any of you use a GSM/PIR camera successfully, for monitoring the security of your equipment. These camaeras have there own batterry and SIM card and send picture to your computer or smartphon. They sound great in theory, but want I to know IF THEY REALLY work and how they last in an outdoor environment.
11. Any one know on the forum where I may be able to buy USED concrete barriers a metre long .Need 20 to block of 30mtr wide gap to stop someone stealing my cord wood.I think heavy RSJ 'S may get taken for scrap same applies to metal gates.Wooden fence they will cut through with chainsaw, baled bundles of tyres, they will just cut the band's. Oh what a sad state of affairs.
12. Had an Email today from an out fit called Premiumwood.co.uk. Always concerned when a company does not have a landline number or give an address. If too suspicious so beit.
13. I see in the Sunday paper Von Essen hotel creditors aim to loose £65 million,I guess there must be some log suppliers amongst them.
14. At least I now know that I am not the only one wanting a basic 4x4 pickup to do a JOB.I think pickup manufactures world wide, have really lost touch with what the purchaser wants to do with a 4x4 pickup. Even the North American ones seem to have got much to plush/flash for the oil patch guys, way of the beaten track. I will be interested in this new range of Isuzu pickup. Ford transits might suit many, but they do not suit my needs of delivering firewood as well as going into muddy woodland tracks, real off road.
15. Ignore above website as I must have made a mistake try this Nissan South Africa
16. Hi Peter and Scotspine 1,this is the web site to look at where you will see NissanNP 300. Many thanks PETER for contacting Nissan, but I justwonder?? http://www.nissan.co.za/en/web/models/NP300WORKHORSE/home/hpage.htm I do not know what it lacks,to comply with road regulations in U.K,I would be very interested to know. By coincidence have had a log order from a guy that lives not far from me, but has a factory in Swaziland Africa. He said if I tell him the model of Nissan truck I am interested in he will get one of his employees to go to the local Nissan garage out there and find out the price for one. He has said that one thing to watch out for is that the speedometer out there are only in Kms per hour. Any way I will proceed with extreme caution, but they are STILL MADE.
17. I am considering changing my Nissan D22 pickup for a new Nissan NP300 Single Cab 4 x 4 ,only trouble is the only place I can find them is in South Africa. Anyone ever imported one from South Africa. Why the NP300,because it is the only pickup still made with a BENCH SEAT, AND IT IS STILL PRETTY BASIC BUT FUNCTIONAL FOR WORK. If anyone else is interested look up Nissan South Africa.A Nissan dealer over here told me they are not made anymore,I just hate being told B...**** ,by car salesman.
18. Doing away with child benefit would be a start,or the Government should only pay out for the first two children. Why ,why do some couples have 4 or 5 children and then wonder why they never have any money,as well as not thinking where the food and FUEL for there children is giong to come from in years to come. Complete short sited ignorance.
19. Look on the timberwolf corp website ,they do conveyors .Not to be confused with Timberwolf u.k. Dont know how one or the othergets away with using almost identical logo.!!!! Hope you see what I mean.
20. l would like forum members views on whether you think wood is REALLY a sustainable fuel in the long term.Despite what we are being led to believe by by people brainier than me, in the forestry industry ,I can't help thinking we are using wood in this country for what ever purpose ,faster than it is growing. I say we can plant as many trees as we like but they are still going to many years to grow to a size worth harvesting. I sell firewood myself,so say what you like.
21. Very Impressive, but setting out to emulate some one elses, so say success, is not neccessarily a short cut ,to becoming successful at the same thing one's self. And remember, for every business success story, there a lot more bussiness failures which we do not here about. I bet they have scary cash flow, which must be secured against what the farm, or what. All that glitters is not gold.
22. I need a log splitter that will split extremely hard, knotty beech and oak EASILY,I say again EASILY,I do not want to have to break the last strands of wood manually like have to with my HY Crack screw splitter very tedious .Max length of knotty pieces will be a 12" long by 18" Diameter.I just want a very basic machine with plenty of ram force at a realistic price. Suggestions please .
23. I would like to hear from anyone who has any experience of using a Caterpillar D4or D6( fitted with winch on the back H,D brush fork on front) for timber extraction, on extremely steep banks consisting of clay soil with the odd spring flowing.4 w.d Tractor useless after the ground gets skiddy.
24. I have just read an article in the sunday paper saying quote "Wood is the new gold-and thanks to save th planet"!!!!!!!! It goes on to say how price of firewood has gone up from £30 to £50 over the last five years. What is so crazy is it seems sudsidies are being given to energy companies to burn wood,if they all come on stream they will need 41million tonnes of wood a year,BUT the total U.K harvest last year was only 10million tonnes as qouted from article. It seems a crazy world or am I showing my age!!! By the way used to buy "News of the World " as well ,much more light hearted articles!!!
25. Are many of you starting to charge £95 for Nissan/toyata single cab pickup load of logs slightly heaped up.
