  1. If you are forestry contractor , which type/make of tyres do you use on your pickup truck ,especially for steep muddy/greasy woodland track surfaces. The "Nexen Rodian AT 2" tyres on my Isuzu pickup seem to slide rather than grip on greasy mud surfaces, very dangerous .
  2. Thanks for the info, which model is it?
  3. I am considering buying a cone splitter to go on a 5/6 tonne 360 excavator. From what I can gather the thread "COARSENESS" varies between different makes eg Lasco,Rabaud, and Black etc. Although asked before, how do you get on with your cone splitter when spilliting cordwood that is as small as 8" inch diameter.
  4. I assume non of you have the above. I have asked before but will ask again,do any of you use a cone splitter on a small medium sized 360 to split the above size wood?
  5. Google "Walkers Logs New Firewood Processor", for pics of their Pezzolato.
  6. I am wanting to know the calorific values of different species of softwood , to compare the difference with Ash. Can any of you suggest where I can find that information. Put another way which species of softwood have the best calorific value for burning in wood burners. Do Scandinavian countries burn a lot of "WELL SEASONED" soft wood in their wood burning stoves? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Is Jim still at Riko UK?
  8. Do any of you use a Rabaud cone splitter WITH grab attachment to spilt 2, 2.5 ,3mtr long cordwood as small as .150 mtr(6"inch) diameter cord wood? Any replies very much appreciated ,many thanks.
  9. I will soon be needing to stock up with processor size Ash/Beech. I would very much like to know what sort of prices are being asked/paid for, for processor size green Ash,or Ash/Beech mix, at roadside in Hants,Wilts and Glos areas. I ask the question as I have not been in the market for any during the last 18 months. Thankyou
  10. When wood is split does it loose quite a lot of moisture immediately,as it was held in the wood under pressure in the minute pores of the wood? If that is the case presumably a log say 6"x 6" x 10" split in half lenghtwise ( logs cut from 2.5 mtr long processing wood thats been seasoned for a yr) will not take very long to loose most of its moisture as long as humidity is not as damp as the log !!!
  11. I have recently been asked by a customer to cut the logs 6"long and split small!!!! Have you been asked to supply logs (large kindling in my mind) to the above specs.
  12. As so much firewood is coming in to the uk from Eastern European countries , I am interested to know whether the logs coming in to the uk (or wherever they are exported to) are created from forest thinnings or clear cut forestry. Have any of you visited Eastern Europe and seen for yourself how they manage woodland/forests. Interesting looking at GOOGLE earth maps/pics to see the extense of woodland /forests in Eastern Europe ,although a few years out of date !!!
  13. Thankyou for your reply,as always it is always the minority that can give a bad reputation for the majority.
  14. Buying kiln dried firewood from Eastern Europe , and making a small margin appeals to me BUT and BUT again, how does one do it it without getting BURNT!!!!! I am sure any of you who are worldy wide will know what I am on about. Has the first few containers been ok to get your confidence, (and money!!), and then hey presto the next container is crap (you have paid for it and when questioned they have disappeared with your money!!!!:sneaky2:)
  15. From what I read on this forum some of you sell air dried logs that have a very low moisture content, down to as low as 14%. I would very much like to know the range of moisture content , that MOST of your logs are at when you sell them. I will start off by saying that mine range from 25% to 30% , not as dry as I would like by any means. BUT,BUT (yes I said but twice on purpose) unless I was to split or billet every single piece of cord wood ranging from 100mm to 600mm (seasoned for a year) I just do not see how air dried wood can be down to much lower than the 25% to 30% figure. I have a Extech MO220 moisture meter. OK some of you mat say it is "one man band" guys like me that get air seasoned firewood a bad name, but I am telling the real truth. This is my 12th season of supplying firewood with very few complaints and a very faithful repeat order customer list. One other question,do you have any customers that strut out to your truck, when you arrive at their house, with their moisture meter in their hand and then proceed to start poking the meter in to your logs and start to make a meal out of how they vary in moisture content:thumbdown:
  16. There was a programme (Mega Shippers) on Quest TV this evening, which did a feature on shipping wood pellets from Louisiana to Immingham docks, and on to Drax Power Station . I am sure the guy at Drax said they use a 1000tonnes of wood pellets (ground to dust) an hour !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How sustainable is that ??????????? Please correct me if I am wrong.
  17. Are any of you that supply air dried logs, getting a few new customers who have come to you because they are finding kiln dried logs are burning too fast? I ask the question as I have had a few customers say kiln dried wood burns too fast for them, and so have come to me for seasoned air dried logs.
  18. Do any of you have a Douvre or Nordpeis wood burning fire /stove which you can have the bifolding doors open.
  19. Does dry slightly spelted Beech burn o.k in a woodburner.
  20. I need some really bright lights on the back of my tractor to illuminate my firewood processor and surrounding area.Have any fitted LED or Xenon lights to your firewood processing tractor,if so, are they really good, and were they reasonably easy to connect up to old wiring?
  21. I see a few threads from some of you about hiring out your firewood processor. What type of customer hires your processor, are they farmers, small holders etc? I ask the question, as although the idea sounds good in theory I stopped and asked myself , "Is there really a demand for this type of service"? Have you found that their is a VERY small demand for the service, that only brings in a bit of pocket money, certainly not a stand on its own (financially) service.
  22. Processed as orders come in through autumn, winter and spring months 600 Cu LOOSE logs. Semi seasoned wood. Wood, some roundwood and some billets from large trunks. Diameter 3" to 48" + ( split into the billets above. )
  23. Are the Hycrack screw splitters still made as I was under the impression they did not comply with health and safety issues? Although you had to watch your fingers with them they were a very good splitter for very knotty wood . Bastard thieves stole mine which had ,had very little use.
  24. As there are so many makes of firewood processor on the market now, please can you give me some quidance on the main differences between them and the points to consider when buying one, to process at max 600cu mtrs a year. I do not mind paying for quality of build, BUT I do not like paying a premium for supposedly high end brand, when in fact it is no better built than a lesser known make of machine.
  25. As you say it is amazing how much longer it takes to cut 9"compared to even a 10"log especially if they like them split small . Yet another instance of how an extra 1" or 2 makes all the difference:lol:
