  1. I don't know anyone who uses a grigri for day to day climbing, as I understand it the prussik used in rock climbing is somewhat different from its use in arb. Assuming you are using a 13mm arb rope such as xtc, you want a 10mm or min 8mm prussik loop, that's all you need to ascend, descend and work the tree. You will also need a short lanyard, say 5m of 13mm rope and another prussik so if you need to change over you are still tied in, and to give you a second anchor point when cutting or to stop you swinging. If you can make it to the arb show this weekend, you will come away with a much greater understanding of tree climbing techniques, as well as a desire for lots of shiny jingly toys Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  2. I love the VT myself, I find that a well tuned VT will outperform a Zigzag or Spiderjack any day of the week. Problem is it takes a lot of playing to get to that stage! I'd buy a few lengths of cord, forget eye to eyes as I find cord length is crucial and you can't adjust the eyes unlike a fishermans Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. Met David a few times, didn't know him that well but always seemed like a decent, cheerful bloke. Rest in peace, thoughts go to the family and friends Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. Hedgelaying from a few years ago Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  5. What's happening with the chip? Chip and spray, dump on site somewhere or remove entirely? For a lot less than £250 you could hire a great big 4x4 dumper, tie a rope to it and pull then use it to chip into and dump on site if that helps, done that once or twice before. 6. Think western power use Buckingham if that's any help... Can you post a picture of said spikes, someone may be able to id them Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  7. If it helps, I'm fairly certain I have an old Samsung s5 with a broken speaker at home. You can't use it to make calls but everything else works, happy to pop it in the post for you Steve as a tester phone? Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  8. When i search for something using Google on my phone (Motorola on android) and a relevant arbtalk thread pops up in the results, when i click on it the app opens but on the normal home page meaning i then have to try and remember what the thread i was about to look at was called, and search again within the app? Is there a way round this, or am i being a bit dense? Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  9. There is absolutely nothing to stop you buying a van, writing Top Cat Professional Arboriculture on the side and off you go! However, i would suggest first of all that you would be better off working for another company for a couple of years and getting some experience of the job, as running your own company you need to be able to deal with nearly any job quickly, effeciently and safely. Failing that, NPTC tickets are the first starting point followed by some evidence of theoretical arboriculture and tree health. This is down to you and how far you want to go, as there is no legal requirement for you to hold anything to call yourself a tree surgeon/arborist Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  10. Lister wilder in Cirencester is where I usually go, not too sure off the top of my head how far that is from Bristol. There is a Lister depot somewhere down that way, but I think they only sell arb kit from the Ciren branch?
  11. Find out who your network operator is (western power, SSE or similar) and contact them. They will either have one of their teams cut around the lines until they judge it safe for you to cut, or they will come out and turn the power off for you. Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  12. Pfanner 😀 Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  13. Don't get me wrong, they're nicely fitting and light weight. Unfortunately most of my work is utility, which mainly means climbing into thorn hedges, which is hard on any trousers! Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  14. I got a pair of arbortec in January to replace my 3 year old pfanner, to be honest they seem very similar to hiflex and I doubt I'll get much more than a year out of them. I wouldn't have anything other than Pfanner now, they're more expensive but outlast everything else I've tried by a long way Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  15. By arb waste do you mean wood chip, or mashed branches empty monster cans and rakings? Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app

    new pick up

I used to drive a base model 65 plate d-max in my old job every day towing a tracked chipper. It was brilliant on the road, would sit comfortably on the motorway. However the minute you went off road or even tried to reverse up a drive it was crap, absolutely no low down grunt at all and far to highly geared IMO. Apparently the automatic is better, never driven one though so can't comment. I now have a 63 plate hilux, not quite as good at cruising as no 6th gear ( although not bad, don't get me wrong) and far, far better off road etc. I'd go for the Hilux any day Sent from my XT1700 using Arbtalk mobile app
  17. My understanding is that while if you have less than 5 employees (including any freelance workers that day) you do not need to have a written risk assessment, you still need to carry one out verbally. My view is that it's good practice to have a written risk assessment for every job, signed by all people on site. Then if the worst happens, you have evidence they accepted the RA and it doesn't turn into a his word against yours situation. I'm not sure if any specific courses are available out there, maybe the Arb Association do one? Plenty of templates on the web, just download one and modify it to your needs.
  18. I haven't tried it myself as never had an issue (rarely take a silky up the tree these days!) but have seen several people use a strong magnet from a speaker or similar, taped to the sheath of the saw
  19. To be honest, I only put the post up because I'm pretty dense and didn't see the glitches thread
  20. Poor old girl! You don't have any contact details for the chap by my chance please?
  21. Just out of curiosity, anyone know where my old truck is these days? Gov website is showing no tax or MOT since 2015, so she's probably sat up somewhere Reg no G973 SMB, last seen heading towards Oxford in the hands of a new owner in Jan 2015. Was a grey colour 110 tipper... Could do with a 4x4 tipper now, if she's currently lounging about I may see if I can buy her back!
  22. No probs, hopefully everyone will be able to see it now! Comes up for me
  23. Hi Steve, I just sent you a PM, and realised that once I had logged in, when I go to the arbtalk.co.uk/forum page, I can no longer see the Christmas Raffle forum at the top of the page, the whole News section has disappeared and General Chat is at the top instead? When I log out and return to the same page, the News section has reappeared! If this is happening for other people, I imagine very few people will be able to see the thread! I would have sent you another PM, but went to your user profile and couldn't work out how Cheers, Joe
  24. Will buy my tickets this evening. How do I donate a prize, put it on here or PM you Steve?
  25. LED Lenser are pretty decent, and should be able to get one within your price range. Might be worth going on eBay, getting one of these and linking it to battery on your grinder with crocodile clips? Assuming you have a battery, not a pull start that is! 27W LED Work Light Offroad Flood Lamp Square Floodlight Truck Boat Bar 12V Camp | eBay
