  1. i have tried it about 20 times today as i did wonder this myself- same problem every time. i could not get hold of dealer today- corwen forestry who are very good, i will ask them tomorrow as its a real mystery, thanks
  2. i have tried it without the side/brake plate off, whilst holding the bar in place- same problem!! thanks
  3. i have just assembled my new 346xp. i cannot get the chain correctly tensioned - when pulling the chain by hand it is putting tension on the rear sprocket- it is pretty hard to pull, but the chain can easily be pulled slack about an inch beneath the bar. when you pull the chain it soon tightens up again- way too tight. if you pull the chain backwards it moves easily as it should- with no strain on the sprocket. but the slack below appears straight away. pull it forward and it tightens again. the 'side plate'/ chain brake cover is seated correctly, and the adjuster is in place. the rear sprocket has quite a bit of play, but i assume this is correct, although i cannot think what else it is. slackening the adjuster does not seem to ease the strain on the sprocket- it just gives more slack chain to drop, yet chain still does not pull. all strain seems to be on the rear. i started the saw briefly to see if that slackened it up, but it seemed reluctant to shift the chain freely.everything is new- bar, saw and chain any ideas welcome, thanks!!
  4. i have 2 fields, both 2.3 acres that i have planted up in yorkshire. the number one problem has been roe deer damage. i did not use deer guards- just spirals and tubex easy wraps. tubex easy wraps are possibly the worst tree guard in the world (my opinion) . only use them if the trees are taller than the guards as they struggle to grow out of them. there is no air circulation and they act like an overhot greenhouse. in hindsight i would go for less trees, but with 1.2m plus guards. i am going to try mesh ones as i think the bigger tubex ones will also have a bit of an adverse effect- although i know they are the most popular. if you get a grant and some of the trees die you have to pay back the respective money i think. cheap planting solutions are willow and poplar cuttings (free). a good tree to plant is wild cherry- fast growing and good timber.
  5. thanks, i have managed to get my ISC steel one in, only just though!
  6. it was a small screwgate that i tried due to its smaller diameter. i will keep an eye on it - for now, cheers
  7. i bought a 37m yale scorch on monday (online). i have just taken it from its bag and tried to put a carabiner through its eye- which looked too small. in doing so a few fibres have torn inside the eye. i'm thinking this is not good in such a critical place? should i complain as it was hardly worth paying the extra money for an eyed rope. i was hoping to use it this week. i usually use an un-eyed rope (gecko) but thought i would pay a bit more this time!! thanks
  8. I agree these are great hedgecutters. My stihl R model cuts through thick stuff but fumes are pretty horrendous. I've had a couple of huskies in the last few years which have been piles of crap (vibrated to bits)- not sure how their latest models perform. Best one i had was a husky 225 ? which was brilliant- they stopped making them!
  9. there is nothing wrong with them blue books!
  10. suckers are the new shoots that the roots send up. watch out as they can spread a few metres from the parent plant. they can grow really dense and need cutting down every year - unless you want them to take over! nothing much will grow beneath them. they can be a real nuisance!!
  11. i have seen samson 3 strand on the net, but i'm not sure if its available in the uk and if its ce rated. its not nylon, so not too stretchy. i prefer my hitches on 3 strand- a bit more practice needed on the 'new' rope!
  12. don't plant blackthorns unless you have time to cut down the suckers. i have 100metres in a hedge if you have a jcb. only joking, they are good for bullfinches.

i have a cs 350?? or something like. i don't use it much as i have a husky 339 top handle saw which has a good bit more power. however it is a good little saw for thinner stuff- about 4 inch or less (a bit limitting!) it does not feel very robust when lugging up trees.very good on price though!!
  14. i was wondering if 3 strand climbing rope is still used by anyone? i started off with nylon, and have seen the poly dacron ropes advertised in the US.
  15. i am looking at getting a new ride on. i have seen 'craftsman' on e-bay with a 42 inch deck and a 24hp briggs and stratton v-twin. the engines are good, but does anyone know if the rest of the machine is? they are very well priced at 1795 inc. vat i think! they are american, but i have no idea about their performance and build, thanks
  16. i find mercedes drivers are maybe amongst the fastest drivers, but the slowest payers. old people are the slowest movers, but the fastest payers
  17. What make were those 2 pairs?
  18. oh dear, sounds nasty. i was a big fan in the late eighties RIP
  19. just message about the harness you have for sale. just noticed the maillon rapide should be a delta one, not the semi-circle. only know as just bought one myself and they should only be loaded in 2 directions, not on the short axis, cheers

  20. what happened to him?
  21. i have recently got a hayter 21inch heavy duty- its the business, except costs over £900. it does 4mph and has a 6.5(?)hp kawasaki engine.only drawback it won't cut really low. that does not answer your question, i know!
  22. thanks for replies. i have not had a reply from the supplier yet (sent yesterday). i have asked them if it was stored away from sunlight, but really they could tell me what i wanted to hear. think i'm gonna ask for a refund, under 'distant selling act' (i think?), they have to refund!!
  23. its 'new' from supplier, but really 4 years old!!
  24. i have just bought a harness online, only to find its year of manufacture 2006. i am considering asking for a refund, as recommendations are to replace after 5 years. just wondering what was best course of action? i have e-mailed supplier today regarding its age. thanks
