  1. If brokerage companies like this ever took off it would just be another layer of middle man between customer and client. Even if it was not a scam what sort of customer would they be likely to pass on to newbies? Not the lucrative ones. Bargepoles!
  2. I've been fed up with the leaf blower making a bit of a mess with the somewhat random direction of expelled air, so I've found a solution. I figured that bullets go much straighter when fired from a rifled barrel so I fitted an old spring down the tube, it's a sort of wide-profile slinky spring. The air comes out dead straight now and cleaning up is so much better. I've been in touch with our local steel processor about having some made. Gotta be a good market for these. Watch this space
  3. Good on you, Sandworks. If you have the time and inclination, why not make good bucks out of it. I personally don't as I've found the domestic penny pinchers don't want to spend much and they assume it's just the 'easy' bit left to do. If you do it - charge good money. Anyone who undercuts will only do it once.
  4. I've had four people phone me in the last few days with the same request.... I've managed to get my tree down but theres so much of it, would you be able to come and get rid of it for me? Probably more such enquiries than I've had in the last 6 months. Must be the spring weather and cheap 'closing down' deals on chainsaws at B&Q.
  5. And what makes you think they will pay up in less than 90 days after the end of the month in which they receive the invoice. The grass can be less than green on the other side. They will usualy want you to produce a method statement specific to that job, risk assessment, attend site briefing before starting, wear whatever coloured vests they chose while you are there and more. Last time we worked for a named supermarket I spent A LOT longer with the prep of parework than we did on the job. I got paid the same year. I personally prefer working for Mrs Goggins/Muggins/Miggins.
  6. I think that sketch has been done before. You can walk to the chipper but you must run back. The guy advocating this is a black belt something so be careful.
  7. Thats what he told you, then he picked it up while you weren't looking:lol:
  8. Its all comes down to your views on Jensen Buttons. Sorry, I'll be off now
  9. I've always found them to be as honest and sound as car dealers.
  10. Its been going longer than my landrover ever does, thats for sure.
  11. Two of my guys have reported sick with broken shoulder bones in the last three years! Didn't know it was contageous. Useless skivvies - are you listening Spoons? They even have the occasional toilet break!!!!!

    Pay

I can never understand employees getting het up about what others 'say' they are earning and what others should be earning, but it does cause angst. If someone is on a good whack are they really going to blab about it to others who are probably on less? Can anyone believe what others say they earn? It's a valid question on a forum but employees will tend to overstate their earnings and it is in the interests of employers to maintain discretion and play the numbers down. Who knows who is reading these threads on here. I am happy to discuss wages with any of my guys any time but it is between me and the individual. If we agree that an increase is due, it happens. I may take some persuading but if someone has become worth more then why not? I'd rather pay a bit more for good guys than keep advertising for newbies. Go talk to the boss - don't brood over it. If he thinks you are worth more.....
  13. Is the title of this thread now as redundant as Jeremy Clarkson?
  14. A programmer I used to work with (pre-historic office job) was eventually sacked but here are two of his best excuses. 1. For not coming back after lunch break... 'I spent the afternoon looking for my car, I couldn't remember where I left it' 2. For not coming in at all..... 'I had trouble opening my eyes, then when I got to the top of the stairs a weird sort of vertigo hit me and I can't get down the stairs, that's why I'm calling from the upstairs extension.' Last I heard he was fired as a shelf-filler in a supermarket.
  15. Did that lead to changes in the law? I really don't remember.
  16. I tried phoning TPS but the bloke on the end told me to eff off as I was the millionth bloody caller that day!
  17. You need to read the thread on here about PPE - says it all really.
  18. I have AUS clip poles. I bought them to replace the allow screw-together poles. I've replaced the pruning head with a modified Jameson one which is 10 times better. If the poles flex too much you can wrap the cord around the poles a couple of times, I find that helps recuce the bending. Never used it with more than 9 of the 4ft poles though so it must have its limits somewhere.
  19. I charge more for stumps where I didn't remove the tree. Two reasons at least.. The firm who took it out haven't got a grinder so no competition there, and why should I do it at a price where the customer has just pieced together all the 'cheapest' components of what I could do as a complete job? If they use someone else for the take-down - fine but I'm not gonna polish up an incomplete job for someone else without making GOOD money.
  20. If someone doesn't have a stump ground out they will have to leave it or dig it out. I've found that people will pay a big whack for stump grinding, and not all tree guys have one. I can count the number of times I've NOT got a grindy job on the fingers of one finger. Charge what you like - just beware of obstacles and underground stuff - one mistake there can take the profit from a lot of jobs.
  21. Maybe theres an opening for a tree sturgeon.
  22. Lynerd Skynerd - simple man [ame] [/ame]
  23. Gonna get shouted at here but I think Susan Boyle's version of wild horses was extremely moving - and it wiped a smug smile off the face of the Jeremy Clarkson of the music industry.
  24. Youve got everything from a driver to a putter there, Stubby:thumbup:
