  1. Yes they do exist in a mixture of budgets. I'd say try to get down to a shop if that's an option. See what you like/what suits your budget and take it from there. If you need to, have a look at starter kits to see what components you need. It's personal preference so there is no right or wrong, my only advice would be to buy brand new, with second hand gear you just can never be sure of it's history.
  2. Groundies are arborists, you mean labourers.
  3. Just booked tickets to take my girlfriend to see Michael McIntyre at the end of next month . ...ticket master is costing me a small fortune at the moment lol but it's so worth spending money on experiences, YOLO!
  4. Motorheard are awesome bro I can just imagine how crazy the napalm death gig was Small venues are cool, there was only around 1000 people when I saw lamb of god a few weeks ago
  5. Yep, not to mention the life that arb has given me
  6. Wipe out every arborist between the ages of 18-39? Wow, thank goodness not every boss is as narrow minded as you! Rubbish post (Post that kind of drivvle on a public forum and expect a negative response from the people you've bad mouthed). I'm 24, so I must be useless...
  7. I often naturally make an assumption yes, but upon meeting people I've been very wrong on many occasions!
  8. If you're carrying enough stuff to the chipper then the walk back is your few seconds to catch your breath before hitting the next branches. We work long days in this industry, it's all about working smart, which includes looking after your body whether you're 18 or 80. Fatigue is the biggest cause of accidents, running on site is not smart, it only takes one occasion to forget to look up and bang you have a serious accident on your hands.
  9. I'm holding back until a bit of field testing has been carried out first. Not wishing to sound negative but I don't want to be a test pilot for Petzl! (P.s accept my friend request on fb lol!)
  10. That's what I was thinking! Thrown in at the deep end but it looked like you handled it really nicely bro Well done!
  11. Great response guys Yes Eddy!!! I actually thought I was going to die when they did the wall of death to black label lol! I was in the 2nd row running into the centre, I tucked right in behind this big fat dude haha, that saved me from the initial impact then it just became a huge pit. Fell down twice during the gig and both times go picked up straight away, pits are such a weird combo of being rough yet friendly. I saw a mention of SOAD - that is one band I would love to see live! Metallica supported by Mastodon & Machine Head back in 2007 was also a great gig, I'd forgotten about that one!
  12. Photo of the MK2 (at pre-release stage) Treetools Blog | life in trees - hell yeah! Keeping my mouth shut as I'm honestly not sure what my opinion is.
  13. Kia ora! Thought I'd create a post for people to discuss what music gigs that people may be looking forward to and for people to express their best musical experiences. This has been sparked by the line up of bands that I'm getting the chance to see in the space of a month! I saw Lamb of God here in Auckland just over a week ago, if you're into metal and insane pits then I would highly recommend seeing them live, awesome atmosphere and they put on a good show! Bring Me The Horizon in a few days time, very different style of 'new metal'. Haven't got a ticket yet but I may go and support the Sheffield band! Now the big one.... 8 FOOT SATIVA!!! The most successful metal band to ever come from NZ (West Auckland in fact, which is where I'm living). Seeing them live in their home country in there hometown Auckland. The kiwi fans are going to go off hard, I've never been so excited for a gig in my life!! 25 Oct - \../ (-.-) \../ I was gutted that I never got to go to Download Fest @ Donnington when I was in the UK, and I've just had a full 2 year work visa granted so I won't get a chance anytime soon either which is a shame. My most memorable gig was probably Motorhead back in 2005 at the Ipswich Regent.
  14. Have you ever tried wearing chaps?
  15. Tsurugi medium tooth version (yellow handle). Good handsaw for neat pruning as the narrow blade allows you to get into small forks for an accurate cut. The blades are not flimsey like they appear, I had my first blade for over a year and only replaced it because I lost it. It's hard work on the harder wood species but I guess that's what the large tooth (red handle) version is for. For trees like pin oak I'll always take a chainsaw up with me (the ms150 is perfect in this scenario!).
  16. Nope but sharpening the saw would. More coffee sir?
  17. Welcome to the forum mate! Realistically bro I'd say you need to get some experience with a company doing the donkey work to start off with. Tree work constantly puts you in situations where you've really got to know what you're doing to avoid getting hurt or damaging something, this is not the position that you'll want to be in whilst still learning the ropes yourself. Some of it is common sense but a lot of it is specific knowledge gained only through experience. In an ideal job you will be constantly challenged but have the option to say "hey boss I'm not confident on this part, can you either talk me through it or show me how it's done and on this occasion I'll watch". One accident in this scenario self employed could ruin everything. Though I appreciate how hard it is to get into this trade (in England anyway). Goodluck in whatever path you take!
  18. I got issued a brand spanking new one to trial for Asplundh. I found it to be a great little pruning saw, super light on my harness and it cut nicely. It is unfair to compare it to a 200/201, of course it is not as powerful but it is not trying to replace that saw. For light pruning I think that it definately has a place on the truck, it's ideal for deadwooding where the full power of a 200/201 is not required and you just end up hauling a relatively heavy saw around. I was taking off 15cm diameter ash limbs with no trouble, felled 3 small dead pittosporums (20cm) and used it to lift a few palms. For small jobs like this a 200/201 isn't really necessary and the 150 was perfect. I havn't been using it long enough to comment on it's reliability/build quailty.
  19. Certainly is mate! I can relate back to those times, fresh out of college and still finding it incredibly disheartening trying to find reliable work in this industry. I'm so happy that we both managed to battle through and that things turned out alright for us. You found Chris and I found Asplundh here in New Zealand - Good times my friend :beerchug: Has Chris taken you for a night out on the toon yet? ...make sure your round doesn't fall on the champagne bar, I lost most of my days wage on 3 drinks lol
  20. I'm not a huge fan of mechanical systems in all honesty. I've climbed on the unicender, SJ and even owned a LJ sport for a bit. They're just not for me, I've always come back to the good old HC with either a VT or a distel. I'm keen to try out the new zigzag when it arrives though.
  21. Had a jam on my kernmaster yesterday just having a play in a park. I really liked it, minimal bounce, holds knots nicely. I've climbed on escalator (but not owned it) and that's like climbing on steel wire, which is probably great for access but for working on I'd feel happier knowing it had a bit of play. I'm being really picky here though, kernmaster is pretty much static compared to a lot of other ropes out there.
