  1. So I'm seriously looking at an Avant. The 420 really appeals on size (and cost) but I'm concerned that the hydraulic flow is not enough. Initially I'll be lifting and loading but in the future would like the flexibility to run a flail, stump grinder etc. The 420 has a flow rate of 31 litres per min. The 528 is 36 litres. Doesn't seem like a huge amount but maybe it makes a big difference. What implements do others run off their machines? Many thanks
  2. This is the first year I have tried a heras panel square and so far so good. I've heaped the pile up so with a tarp over the top the water doesn't puddle. 4 new panels, feet and connectors cost £120.
  3. This is my experimental log store, basically 4 Harris fence panels in a square. Logs stacked up the sides and thrown into the centre. I will probably put some old corrugated tin on the top when it's full. I hope that being open on 4 sides will help with the seasoning.
  4. I've recently bought a zigzag after 6 years with a prussic. Its really good. What I'm still getting to grips with is what length sling to use and when. Currently I have a sling to get up into the tree using a pantin that puts the device at the limit of my stretch making it really easy to ascend. I then change to a short 20cm soft link for moving around the tree. I find it a bit awkward to take rope in when climbing with the shorter soft link. What do other people use?
  5. Hi John, Chew Valley trees in Winford are very good. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.
  6. I could be wrong but I think the point is that if you're shovelling chip that's been left in your truck more than say a day you could be breathing in spores that can cause health problems. A bit like farmers lung. Not sure there's any health risk shovelling fresh chip though, surely that's just good exercise (but a PITA at the end of a long day!)
  7. I've been reading this thread with interest and needing a small saw myself decided to try a Dolmar 420. It arrived today! What a top bloke Shavey is, excellent service and what seems like a cracking wee saw. Many thanks
  8. Mine was always a bit spluttery from when I first bought it but recently it would be a pig to start and then would not rev at all, just died. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the fly wheel. So far so good.
  9. I have a stihl fs 400, 460 and a backpack fr 350 I think. For very steep slopes and banks the backpack comes into its own and is worth its weight in gold. I wouldn't want it as my main machine though as it is awkward to store and transport and kills your forearms after a day of it. A bungee from the loop handle to the harness helps take some of the weight.
  10. So a few pictures from Lytes Cary, a National Trust property near to me. The middle pic is of what I would consider a healthy Ash, with good leaf cover throughout the crown. The other 2 trees are very sparse, the leaves mainly confined to the terminal buds on each branch giving the lions tail effect. I have also noticed that a lot of the Ash are VERY heavily laden with keys. Is this just a mast year or maybe a reaction to poor health?
  11. I'm reading this with interest as here in Somerset I have not seen an Ash that I could positively say has chalara fraxinea. However, I'd say a large proportion of the mature Ash don't look right. The crowns are much thinner than normal and it seems like the leaves are growing mainly at the tips, giving a lions tail effect. I would like to get more information on the symptoms on mature trees. I had been wondering if this was more a reaction to climatic conditions over the past few years but now not so sure. I'll try and take some pics today.
  12. No experience with Ssangyong but my Dad had a Great Wall Steed which is also Chinese. He thought he couldn't go wrong with a 7 year warranty and at the price it seemed a bargain. However it was very poorly constructed, brake pads only lasted few thousand miles. He got fed up with small niggly problems and decided to sell it with 6 years of warranty left on it. Thats where he got stung, they depreciate massively second hand, nobody wants them. You pay more for Toyota/Nissan/Mitsy etc but you get what you pay for and when you trade them in you get a good price. He's now got an old Disco 2 which he's pleased as punch with.
  13. Ah, and is there a particular wire that needs to be used or would brake cable off a bike be ok? Looks to be a similar gauge
  14. Slight derail, apologies! I've retired a rope grab as the little wire that goes from the body of the grab to the cam is frayed. The loler report said to replace the wire. Has anyone done this before? Can't quite see how its done.
  15. I'm running a hy crack splitter off an old TEF 20 and its great. Uses next to no fuel. Occasionally stalls the engine on a really knotty piece but not bad for a 1950s tractor.
  16. Haha, had a feeling you might be involved mate! Lots going on there at the moment
  17. That was my feelings too. Wonder if anyone on here is involved in the work around Kennick, Tottiford and Trenchford reservoirs?
  18. Advice needed! A friend on the east side of Dartmoor has a small woodland and he wants to build a log cabin. There is loads of forestry clearance and thinning going on right next door. Spruce and larch mainly. Are these any good for a log cabin? I feel as long as its off the ground and kept dry it ought to be ok. We reckon we will need about 50 lengths of 16ft ish straight poles. Any idea what this would cost? Cheers
  19. I got it from Edinburgh Jon, flew up from Bristol then drove it home.
  20. Where do I stand with that then Woody?
  21. Jon, she says 3049 on the VIN plate but is registered on the V5 as 3500kg
  22. Yeah, she's got some beefy springs on the back. Can't wait to get out and use her. Not being very mechanically minded myself I've got her at my local garage at the moment being looked over.
  23. Yeah that makes sense Hodge. I was thinking of mounting the spare wheel in the back up against the ladder rack to add some more weight.
  24. This is my 4th land rover but my first tipper and my first 200tdi. I find there is stacks of grunt. Alarming amounts of oil leaks but that may be normal! Galv chassis and spotless bulkhead and footwells. Tipper works though its slow to come back down, wondering if a change of oil may help with that. Need to build a chip box too....
  25. So after reading this thread and having seen Ferguson forestrys mates landy on e bay I gave him a call. Seemed like a very decent guy, the landy sounded solid so I took the plunge on Saturday. I live and work in Somerset so I got a cheapo easyjet flight from Bristol to Edinburgh early (wife not at all impressed as she dropped me there!) And Stevie met me at the airport with the landy. Did the deal, fueled up and started the 450 mile drive to Somerset. It was actually ok. Driving through Scottish borders was fun. Slight issue when the lead came off the starter but other than that she was great!
