  1. Hi, I had a job last week dealing with some wind blowns and the client mentioned that the electricity board had taken down an ash and used ecoplugs to kill the stump. I was interested to see that a year on the stump is alive and kicking with stacks of epicormic growth.
  2. I splashed out on Friday on a brand spanking new 660 as I feel it is a superb saw and I am cynical about the 661. It says on the sticker on the chain brake handle it was made in Dec 2013 and it has the old screw type fuel and oil caps. Haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet but looking forward to it:)
  3. Don't hound the poor guy!
  4. Just made 2 bottles, strange year this year. Seems to be nothing nothing nothing on the usual bushes then you come across one that's loaded with sloes. I like the idea of stoning the sloes after you've drunk the gin and dipping them in chocolate. My father in law fills the nearly empty bottle (with sloes) with proper cider-highly recommended.
  5. Hi mate, if you want the outdoorsy but with some style I would definitely recommend the Yurt at Harptree court in Somerset. Not too bad a drive from Winchester and well well worth it. I don't know how to put up a link but I found it on the 'canopy and star's website. Check out the tree house there too, I dream of living in something like that.
  6. 550xp all the way. I was thinking of a 261 until a friend bought one and had no end of trouble. So pleased with my 550, it is such an aggressive, zippy saw. Great for snedding
  7. Well I've just bought the aforementioned lidl £20 walkie talkies and first impressions are good. The ear piece is comfortable under an ear defender and is easily loud enough to hear with the saw on full revs. 3 year warranty, 20 quid, can't go wrong!
  8. Thanks, sounds like wise words. I had heard some people rig up a bungee to take the weight of the handle
  9. Just bought an ex local authority fr350 backpack brush cutter to supplement my fs400 on the steeper banks. I can't seem to find out much about them on tinterweb so wondered if anyone had any experience of this model and any hints or tips eg what maintenance needed, will my blades from the fs400 fit? Etc etc... Cheers
  10. No sign of fruiting bodies or mycelium but I guess in early stages that's to be expected?
  11. I'm still a bit mystified by this one. The dieback extends to the top of the crown and any salt contamination would be very limited and only on the lower limbs if at all. No evidence of mites. I really need to brush up on my P and D knowledge. Thanks to everyone for their input.
  12. The branches that have turned brown are brown all the way through. Wind burn sounds plausible to me as it is only on one side. Still not sure how the salt would have got to the roots in this case but the evidence does stack up as the gritters have been up and down a lot recently
  13. Possibly, I hadnt considered that. The tree is growing next to a busy ish road but there is a wall between it and the road so I don't think it would be that easy for the salt to wash down to the roots. I will go back now and see if there are any drainage holes through the wall.
  14. Just had a call from my neighbour who is worried his Lawson cypress is dying. It has quite significant brown foliage which has appeared in the last 6 weeks particularly near the top of the tree and on one side. My first thought was Phytophthora but not sure if it is down here in Somerset and having never seen it in the flesh not sure what signs to look for. Also, probably not connected, there are two phone cables which run past the tree about 2 foot away near the top and initially it looks like a utility company has 'pruned' the tree for the cables but after a climbing inspection I can see that actually the tree has grown this way and for some unknown reason has not sent any branches towards the cables. I have tried to attach some photos, hope they work. Any help much appreciated!
  15. Ha ha, lots of 4 foot coffee tables
  16. Thanks, will give him a call tomorrow.
  17. On a similar note, does anyone know of a mobile mill that would be capable of dealing with a 4 foot diameter by 10 foot long dead oak butt? Located in Somerset near wrington. Did a job felling this tree that has been standing dead for a year or two and was surprised how good the wood was. If milling is feasible I'm tempted to offer to buy the butt off my client. Cheers:001_smile:
  18. 550 all the way. So impressed with mine that I bought at the apf, it's had 6 weeks hard work now on birch, alder and sallow and hasn't missed a beat. My trusty old 260 seems so slow by comparison now! Will probably upgrade the filter but otherwise no complaints.
  19. Just got mine through from America, gave it a try this afternoon and I am very impressed. Splits stuff I wouldn't even have tried with my maul. Money well spent I hope
  20. Lots of slushy snow on the mendips this morning.
  21. I bought a 550 at the APF show this year and I love it. Really zippy little saw and nice to handle, I've had no issues so far with it.
  22. Had trouble getting arbtalk for the past few days from my phone but seems to be sorted now. Good work Steve!
  23. Yeah, my 18 month old daughter has been diagnosed with whooping cough. She has had all the vacinatioms but that didn't seem to prevent it. It may be that without the vaccination it would be a lot worse? I think a lot of diseases are becoming resistant to our treatments which is a bit scarey!
  24. Yeah, I was wondering about an older Hilux. It just seems that a decent one is pretty hard to come by. Do you not rate the new HL2 very highly then? Cheers
  25. Well, having always had Landys I am getting fed up with the constant maintenance and general unreliability. I like the towing and off road ability of the Defender but after looking at a lot of threads on here my mind is nearly made up to get new or nearly new Hilux, I want a vehicle that will last me a long long time. What I am not sure of is whether to convert it to a tipper, get a pro tipper (removeable) or a load handler. Or do I keep the Hilux sparkly clean and get a cheap tipper truck for chipping into and delivering logs? I really like the idea of having a tipping extra cab Hilux but not sure if its economical or sensible. For the 3-4k it would cost to convert I could get another tipper truck. Any thoughts much appreciated before I blow my daughter's inheritance!
