  1. From these photos alone there is no evidence of any extension. Houses are quite often built from new with various elevational and storey differences. Just because it looks like a box with additions it may have been built like that. And on that note, theres nothing to suggest that the clients house has NOT been extended. Oh, Tim Craig, Its Jellystock! I might not have a six pack but I also have no Jellybelly either!! Jellystock.
  2. As a Builder I can't see that tree causing subsidance, even if it was, how come its only just become apparent? Both the neighbours house and the tree look like they've both been there for a very long time. Conifers are a builders worst enemy when it comes to excavating (new)foundations and in my opinion the conifers are the more likely suspect, IF there is any subsidance at all. Are the neighbours new/recent owners of the house? Get your client to request a copy of the surveyors report, as already mentioned. Jellystock.
  3. I dont really know to be honest, I'd never heard of one untill I spoke to my man this morning who knows a lot more about them than I do. I think what you're describing is an 'H' pot. Jelly.
  4. That would be my first option. Then the Ventura pot (although I cant find anything about it on the net) And then raising the stack itself. Jelly.
  5. Janet and John dont count though!
  6. Im Back, just spoke to my man and he agrees it could be any one of the solutions I suggested. He reckons the easiest way is to install a 'Ventura' chimney pot. Its a pot within a pot that will throw any down draught straight back up and out. If this doesnt work and it may not if your chimney is surrounded by taller objects, trees, other chimneys etc then you'd best get in touch with HETAS who will recomend a fire installer in your area. If you want FREE help and advice then send me some photos of the whole situation, the room, the chamber, the chimney, the pot and the house/bungalow and the surrounding area and all that is there. Hope all that helps my little green friend:001_smile: Jelly.
  7. Hi SWB, Sorry mate, I missed this thread. Firstly you say you had a fire put in, is that an open fire or a log burner, sounds like your talking about an open fire? I've had this problem once before in a shooting lodge we converted. I suspect you have three options. Raise the fire basket or reduce the chamber opening size in height. (stick a smoke pellet/bit of oily rag on a shovel and light it, hold it at the same height of your fire, as the smoke chokes you to death raise the shovel and you'll see it start going where its supposed to go, up the flue) Extend the height of your chimney to produce more draw. Install a 'spinner' on the top of the chimney. I cant give you a definitive answer as its usually a case of elimination, I'll talk to the guy we contract too (Ive already tried to call but cant get hold of him) and run it past him to try and narrow it down a bit. I'll post again later today for yer. Jelly.
  8. Wes is entering a swimming gala for his club at the Black Lion on Saturday the 6th of Feb.

You and Tracy interested in popping along to see your nephew going for gold?

  9. Here Here, glad not everyone is a narrow minded bigot. Anyway, how do you all know that they are not on a rest break. Some people just hate the old bill for the sake of hating the old bill. Who would you call when your child didnt return home on time? Umm? I served 3 & 1/2 years with Kent Police and I am bloody proud of it too. Sure , theres some divs in the force but theres divs in every job. Once you've experienced being a copper then you can pass judgement. Jellystock.
  10. My thoughts exactly. The Darwin Awards
  11. Saucy git, I'll have you know that plastering is bloody hard work, not as hard as splitting logs granted but it's no walk in the park. You lot might find out one day if you ever manage to learn a productive trade!
  12. Cheers but I've picked up a little 2 day job indoors, plastering.
  13. iPhone all day long. On it now typing this post. Had mine 16 months, get the new 3gs very soon. It's the dogs danglies, wouldn't be without it.
  14. I've been a builder most of my working life and started out as a hod carrier so I know what graft is when I see it. Mick sorted me a load of logs again today () but I didnt split em till I got home. I spent about 2 hours humping bloody great 'discs' up steps into my garden and then splitting how Mick showed me to do it. ie, properly!! I am well and truly...........erm...........shall we say.....tired!!!! Feel like I've been beaten up. So,credit where credit is due and top respect to all you blokes that do it day in, day out.
  15. Looks like I got to this one a bit late. I'm a builder but I fit log burners now and then as a contractor. Basically, all the above info is spot on. Follow the above advice and you wont go wrong. Jellystock.
  16. The Burger eating and farting on heads was my fave bit too, it conjours up some great images dont it. Still laughing now thinking about it again.
  17. Absolutely nothing to do with trees what so ever, copied from another (bike) forum but I'm sure theres blokes on here that will laugh as much as I did. Activists Missing After Declaring “War on Leather” at Motorcycle Rally|GlossyNews.com
  18. Its total crap really and no good what so ever so you best just give it all to me. Seriously though, It takes quite a bit of air to keep it going and its best to split even the smallest bore of logs to give the fire a sharp edge to grab on to, if you know what I mean. Apart from that its fine.
  19. I get conifer from Mick, I'll agree that it does burn a bit quick but I simply lower the air intake to the stove and it smoulders away lovely. When I cant hook up with Mick I get hold of some Chestnut, and IMO the conifer is better. I have no probs burning conifer at all, but then I do get it for a bargain price, absolutely FA so cant grumble at that!! I've burnt pallets and decking before, now that does burn fast!!!!!! if its in a log burner (as opposed to an open fire) shut all the air intakes off.
  20. David Blunkett was lent a cheese grater...... Said it was the most blood thirstiest book he'd ever read:lol:
  21. It was bucketing down with sleet here at 4am (Sittingbourne, Kent) and now its 2.5c now (10:10) Everything is dripping at the moment so fingers crossed and hopefully back to work tomorrow. My Missus reckons we aint out of the woods yet though. Dunno what she means though as we live on a main road in a town??!! I'll get my coat.
  22. I would suggest you've lost the deposit but no harm in asking. out of curiosity, why you got a pic of my missus as your avatar?
  23. A 70-year-old man goes to the doctor's for a physical. The doctor runs some tests and says to the man, "well, everything seems to be in top condition physically, but what about mentally? How is your connection with God?" And the man says, "oh, me and God? We're tight. We have a real bond, he's good to me. Every night when I have to get up to go to the bathroom, he turns on the light for me, and then, when I leave, he turns it back off." Well, upon hearing this the doctor was astonished. He called the man's wife and said, "I'd like to speak to you about your husband's connection with God. He claims that every night when he needs to use the restroom, God turns on the light for him and turns it off for him again when he leaves. Is this true?" And she says, "that idiot, he's been pissing in the fridge!" Do people with Alzheimers get Deja Vu?
