Mares tail is the aquatic one, I now know, always thought they were one and the same

Evening all, got some young planting at the farm thats ready for thinning but the mares tail has gone mad this year is above my knees , I want to spray it off before starting thinning as don't want to be sawing in amongst it, only effective sprays I've seen for mares tail will knock out all the grass etc as well and leave bare ground so wondered if is anything selective that will do the job?

I don't change the price if I'm told they have other qoutes, but not being VAT registered makes me 20% cheaper, so if I'm somewhere near the other prices that can make the difference

I don't lend out decent tools as they usually come back screwed, one exception was a few years back, got a call off a tree surgeon friend of mine asking if a mate of his could "hire" my sawbench seeing as it was an old Mcconnell not in the best of nick I said no but he could borrow it as long as he sharpened the blades in return for use, when the guy dropped it back he had sharpened both blades, fixed the pto guard and the foot brake on the belts and bought me a case of beer, I couldnt persuade him to borrow anything else though

Best one I had was few years back, after the milkman got stuck on the drive at the farm in the snow he refused to bring the milk down the drive even in the summer so would leave it a the road end, someone cottoned onto this and would nick a pint every morning, best bit was the cheeky barsteward would wash the bottle out and leave it the next morning

Exactly the lines I was thinking along mate, simple economics there will always be a level o fprice that the market will stand, wether that level is above or below what you need to make to cover costs really depends on where you are in the country and how many people providing the same service in your area, everyone from private individuals to local authorities are trying to save money, after foot and mouth round here there must have been another half dozen agri fencing contractors sprung up which has pushed it to the point where I usually get 1 in 10 of the jobs priced, due to people with shiny kit working for nowt just to keep cash flow and keep bank happy, similarly since the start of the recession it seems every man and his dog has got a trailer on the back of thier car with a mower in and is a gardener, if you can afford to stand your ground and wait for people to accept prices at the level your happy at thats fair enough, if not you do like me and take whats offered workwise even if it may not be my core work or using any of the gear I've got, monies, money at the end of the day

All depends on what quality of turf your using can range from 75p a square yard to £3-4 per square yard, also how much prep work does the site need, removal of old turf, digging/rotavating, levelling and stone picking, the laying is the quick bit! Its the prep where the costs are
