  1. i was toying with that idea tbh, but as there wasnt a huge amount of weight to increase the force on the lean, i chose a standard cut instead. Although im still a bit gutted it didnt make a big thud!
  2. i was a cuttin as a fast as i coulda! i put the ear in one side, i dont know why i decided not to do it on the other, i started marking out my back cut instead as it was ont he way round. ah well. ed: ive seen those boys, what a bunch o looneys
  3. which one do you have? i got a 4, because we could so we did! ive had this new spangled firmware since it came out in june, i likey!
  4. the lad who filmed it shouted timber. it was a big gob on it too. didnt want too big as i didnt want to find rotten wood, but it was all sound, it was purely the hinge! I chuckle as i watch it, as i could see it hitting the deck, and it just didnt. ive nver had that happen!
  5. if they allow you to sleep in vehicles parked inthe car park, ill have room in the back of a pickup, covered on top but only mesh at the back. ill be in the cab with a sheet over the windows.
  6. get a tramp stamp, that has the stihl logo or husqvarna, whichever is better!
  7. ill keep those in mind, ive heard good reviews about those too so i shall be giving them a go
  8. Heres the video, i kept the hinge nice and big to keep him slow, although i left a tad too much on the right hand side, and hence what happened! watch and see! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAlFI7EmKME]YouTube - Big willow tree fell[/ame]
  9. We spent some time splitting logs that wouldnt quite go through the chipper (12" TW) so that was taking time to sort them. gave up in the end, was just taking too much time. its either gladiators or x fits, i think x fits are the choce for me tbh!
  10. if i did, i would have everything colour coded just for you haha. although, i do like those gladiators, ive got a red regatta jacket, maybe some new boots if i like them, i just dont have a red lid, that will have to stay grey. ill be like a walking, er, red thing! to clear the trouser issue up, thats not me! ed, if you could have got all that in one trailer load, i would actually turn up at my next job in just my boots. i did plan for one day, the stuff was coming down so fast, there was very little time to grab stuff, as much as it was getting at my OCD to have a tidy site. the drag was about 40m, between two hedges that im sure had hands to grab whatever you pulled past.
  11. ill be trying them all on to see how they fit. as im ont mega busy this pair will last a while. Ill have a pair of haix up for sale if anybody wants them. size 10 i think they look cool! although i do agree they look a bit gay. i can wear them to match this new outfit!
  12. can you imagine that explanation 'sorry honey, your gear just isnt good enough!'
  13. So, after a month from first going to look at this tree. seeing its faults, and realising this will be a good challenge. 2 days, one 8 hour day and a 12 hour day the next. expected two trailer loads max, and this trailer is a big 12t agri trailer. 2 full loads of chip, 2 loads of brash and remaining logs. wow. Got some good pics, a cracking experience was had, weather held out both days. Video is going to youtube as i post this. two pictures with the split were the split noticed in the scaffold limb to one side, i think thats a pretty good reason for it to split, as a lot of the wood was like this. at the points where the ferns were growing out of the cavity, there was only occluding bark on the opposite side, with two ribs of wood about 6" thick either side covering round 3/4 of the stem. Some good sights on this one, was a shame to take it down, but i loved it to be honest. This was a bit of a make or break moment so far for me, my biggest job yet. With it being a big oversight as to how much volume was being removed, but with the help of a couple friends, i stopped myself from letting it get me down and i grit my teeth, dug my heels in and kept going. 20 hours on site in total, 7 hours sleep between it.
  14. Im gonna treat myself to a shiny pair of boots at the APF. Which ones? Im choosing between the airstreams, zermatts or protector pros. Im after some reviews on them, as i have a pair of blue ridge, which hurt my feet after doing half a days walking. Im sure my toes are about to leave me.
  15. I agree, it makes you love your work more when your loved one wants to help too! My mrs, works in dorothy perkins, hates it there, but offers to come and help me on little jobs. and she does it for free! Mind, they never are free! Im always buying her something!
  16. i made the mistake of filling a trailer up with chip, big agri trailer, was chipping on a gravel driveway, putting small logs through, big chips coming out, some bouncing out. Still need to go back and get the rest of the bits i didnt want to pick up after 12 hours on site. should have put a tarp down. bar stewards.
  17. that purdy lass in the stihl catalogue makes me want the x fits more. Matching sets for me and the mrs!
  18. i use a 1.3m bungee, its just right for me, im at a massive height of 5'8''. use the centre rear to clip the end on, then a petzl caritool either side for clipping the rign on either side you are working on, or one on the back if you want it balanced bungee ones are fun for when the groundy has hold of the saw and you are low to the ground, as you release the end one, firing the crab towards them.
  19. i opened up the muffler on my dads old 039, i read a lot on other sites, before i did anything, the muffler exit holes shoudlnt be more than 80% of the exhaust port onthe piston, any more isnt good, I think im about there. Used a dremel with a drill bit and a grinding bit. Making circles bigger and bigger till i felt they were right, make sure you clean up any rough edges and make sure you make it clean inside. Also opened my 260 up slightly, not done it enough to make a difference, sounded slightly different but now its almost no change. I painted the mufflers with black woodstove (high heat) paint after modding, looks nice. After they were rubbed down well with a wire brush and dremel brush to give them a good surface for paint to stick to. the 039 sounds like a scouser on a crosser, razzes its nuts off and sounds cool, lot louder though. It used to run a 16" bar ok, ive put an 18 on it and it runs that well, tested it on some big oak pieces cutting full length, worked well.
  20. yet more inspiring stuff david. Indeed. im sat here in awe. The old pear story was truly striking. Some good karma coming your way, if you believe in it. we took down an old beech, probably looking to be 100 years, merip at the base, some daldinia on some limbs, looking back on the situation, it could have been managed well. Instead it was taken down because of targets, main road, substation, bus stop, residential all within 15m of the tree. Was a lovely old fellow. Lots of pictures were taken of the takedown, some good finds, i look back on them now and i get so much more out of the situation. Back on track, mind, in the bottom of the stem is carved T. Jones 8 October 1957 i was the first to notice it as it sat in our shed seasoning. Needless to say, for some reason, i feel a connection to this tree, as the wood sat there in the shed, i would walk over to it and just have a look over it, stand on the wood lying there, i enjoy the smell of the wood. I put it down to my first big step, more of a shove, into the big arb world, it was a bit of a make or break situation, some hard times, lots of new experiences, but i stuck it out, came out of it wanting to carry on with this stuff. As i was processing some of the other pieces, i found various pieces of metal, not nails, as this tree was in liverpool, im suspecting it to be shrapnel from the war, yet to retrieve the two largest pieces found so far though. Would love to finish cutting and find more.
  21. i wanna try a pair on, wouldnt want to get them nicked at that price!
  22. in big open canopies i use both ends of my rope, works a treat on large branchwalks, no fighting that swing. usually just a main line with a side strop, vt on the side, need to shorten it actually, and im going between a VT or knut and a blakes for my climbing, i think im gonna settle on the vt or knut, although the blakes is reliable, the other two are easier.
  23. i heard his dads called Myxed!
  24. wow, if i ever win the lottery, thats on my list, aswell as a lot of other shiny stuff
  25. i use 8mm OP on my ropes, i have all 13mm lines so all hitches work the same on each, i struggled to get a VT to self tend but i would rather have the extra wrap and grabability than the ease of use. i bought 2 e2e slings, for abou £28 each they aret cheap, handy because of the eyes, but now i would rather tie two fishermans, bought 5m for less than 20£ and ice got more than 4 cords out of it with room for a couple more. armor pruss s nice and soft, works well as a vt on the 16 strands.
