  1. Good stuff, well said. Maybe i'll bump into you some time! Cheers for now.
  2. I always keep an eye on your posts Matt as i'm not far (by Highland standards) up the road. Good to see things are going well for you. If I remember right this isn't the first time you've recruited extra hands on here, good to see too:thumbup: Is Alex still working for you?
  3. Nice one Bob! So, according to the 301 extract above I COULD wear the helmet that started this thread as it's EN 12492 approved (which exceeds EN 397). As long as I wore EN 166 glasses eg Bolle Silium's and any EN 352 ear plugs. Whether I SHOULD or not is probably another matter. So it looks like any rock / ice / whitewater / multisport helmet that's EN 12492 approved is fair game then - right?
  4. Hmmm doesn't sound too promising - this calls for another thread (and possibly one for visors / glasses too!) Will pick this up tomorrow as it's passed my bedtime - have a 5am start to look for Capercaillie. Big thanks to all so far.
  5. So earplugs for ground use then (saw only no chipper) what does anyone think?
  6. Gotcha Bob cheers for that. I'll have a search on here and see what the forums ear plug users are saying.
  7. Cheers Bob for clearing that up. So I can wear this and not be breaking any rules?
  8. Too true and like I said I want to make sure I follow the rules. It's got the EN 12492 approval on it. Does this mean it's rated for top and side impacts then? Does this rating cover the chin strap release pressure too? Just to reiterate, I will NOT be climbing. Like I say i've only ever worn your classic Husky setup so am unclear of the rules. Can someone clarify?
  9. Good to hear from someone who's using one. Sounds pretty durable from what you've said! Do you think the Grivel + plugs will be any cooler than my current Husky lid with defenders then dm? Ta.
  10. You're right enough. I want to try plugs though so not too worried.
  11. Aye it was still pretty wobbly. Spent ages trying to get it right. Like I say maybe it's my idea of how it should fit that's wrong not how it actually does fit.
  12. Here's a pic of the inside.... http://www.dzmaz.com/images1/26474_4.jpg .... what do you think? This is all new to me so appreciate your thoughts!
  13. Cheers BenR it was the new Vertex Vent I tried though. I guess adding ear defenders would keep it clamped in place, but I fancy trying plugs out instead as i'm just getting too hot when working. Also tried the Altios, Elios, Ecrin Roc, etc. Maybe they did all fit properly, just not how I was expecting - I dunno.... One thing's for sure though I put that Grivel on and the fit was just what I was after!
  14. Went looking for a new lid at the weekend, i'm fancying a change after never having worn anything but the bog standard Husqvarna set up. Tried Vertex vents and the like in the local saw shops but none of them fitted! Then I found this in an outdoors one: Grivel Salamander Climbing Helmet - Only £54.95 - Cave and Crag Is this legit to wear? It's got the CE12492 mark on it - i'm not a climber. Only reason I ask is because the fit was SWEET. I want to change to something lighter etc and try out the ear plugs and glasses combo some of you wear, but want to be on the right side of the rules too. Only reference to it I can find for tree work is here: Grivel Salamander Climbing Helmet - Tree Gear Equipment Any ideas anyone? Ta.
  15. What angles are we all sharpening to? Please state chain manufacturer, pitch & angles used (along with any other ripping chain sharpening tips) Seems like there's lots of different ideas around on the net as to what's best, would be good to have a clear guide here.
  16. Kelly kettle and a combined coffee press/insulated mug thing (Google Marmot Mountaineer Mug if you're interested). Can use it for fresh ground coffee or looseleaf tea - can't beat it! Usually carry about 3 litres of water in the truck for both the kelly kettle and general drinking. I drink loads as being de-hydrated = feling cr@p = lower work output = less cash at the end of the day.
  17. Paid snow days - I wish! I can't even get into the woods to work up here at the moment - the tracks are totally impassable!
  18. Damn cold, foot and a half of snow, nobody out, love it
  19. Altberg all the way! They come in a full range of half sizes and umpteen different width fittings. Made in Yorkshire (or Italy depending on model) - surely worth supporting the country's last boot maker.... I have a pair of "Mallerstang II's" that're well into their 3rd year and damn near as good as the day I bought them! Don't be put off by the old school website Altberg Bootmakers manufacture hiking boots & walking boots for hill walking also Military boots, Police boots and motorcycle boots for operational use worldwide
