Hi all, Spotted this Kretch on a lime we were crown lifting today, the old blackened, dead part was indeed crumbly when crushed in my fingers, the new fresh fungi can be seen as the lighter, greyish growth. Thought it may be of interest for anyone trying to ID Kretzschmaria deusta. I informed the owner that a more thorough inspection would be advisable, we couldn’t do one as we don’t have the tech for such a detailed inspection.

Never heard that before, how and why would you do that?

I’ve just checked the packing slip, yes there’s an item number and all the manufacturing/certification is in the product spec on the web page, of course. I guess I’m so used to seeing tags on spliced ropes, hence the question. Sorted, thank you all 👍

Thanks Dan, I’m cool with that, yes it was by the metre, quite happy to climb on it, I just thought all ropes should be marked up, especially after reading this?

Ok, I don’t have any paper work with it ( apart from a receipt) but I know the manufacturer, type of rope but no idea when it was first manufactured because there’s no evidence for me, I feel a little unhappy about this, I thought all PPE had to be marked up?

Hey all, Do unspliced climbing ropes have to be marked up with a CE/ID tag at one end or is it down to me to mark up for ID purposes given that the rope is manufactured to the said safety limits and has no splice? I feel a bit daft asking as I’ve been climbing for 20+ years, maybe the grey matter is letting me down!😆

Aqua Fell, thank you, I’ve been looking for these for ages, I used to wear them, they are the best boots I wore for climbing, grounding and dog walking, so comfy, I’ve just ordered a pair for £135. I don’t really like the newer (now old) style of boot, chunky and heavy, so I’m ditching my Scafell lites for these!! Thanks again Treerover 👍

So I had a reccy climb with both BDB and RRP today on Yale Blaze, the BDB I had stop using as the Blaze is narrower than the Tachyon I used to use, it was creeping a lot, I’ll have to change the bollard or borrow some Tachyon. The RRP and Blaze were great, low n slow to start then eventually climbed up to TIP about 12m up, descended slowly and climbed back up, it was quick, I had a chest harness attached and the RRP just ran up the rope with me, no friction at all, the tree was an Alder so an easy hands on climb but I was amazed by the speed I got up, it truly is a rope runner, well done Kevin Bingham. I’ll sort my BDB out to give a proper comparison.

“a great double braid for srt is Yale blaze or Samson velocity” I’m glad you mentioned Blaze, I used it for the first time today with RRP, a reccy climb to get to know the RRP, I was very pleased with it, so flexible and light, I’m used to Tachyon but will switch to Yale Blaze [emoji106]

I got my RRP today, I’ve not climbed on yet but have been getting familiar with it, my initial findings are it takes up more rope and weighs 20g more, which surprised me actually, just running them both up and down on some rope in the house the RRP feels a lot slicker but I like the hand position of the BDB, it feels more like a traditional hitch and not just using your fingers on the bird of the RRP. I’m planning a reccy tomorrow and I’ll report back. I’m not excited at all [emoji38]

I clip my Bulldog bone to a chest harness, when I used a rope wrench I just used a Pantin foot ascender [emoji106]

Hi, for canopy access I’d ditch the knee ascender, I use a chest and foot ascender and “footlock” my way up pulling my legs up as far as I can, it’s fairly rapid [emoji106]

Hey all, I’m looking to get back into Arb part time initially, I’m based in North East Worcs, I’ve 18 years plus experience in the industry, I am a vet at 53 but still fit and longing to get back. I’ll be upfront about P/T hrs, in 2018 I was suffering with anxiety and pain in the wrists and shoulder and told by Occ Health to switch careers, took some time out then totally switched. All good now and really miss Arb/Urban Forestry. I started out as a groundie and then a competent climber using drt, srt and MEWPs, Cert Arb, saw and climb/rescue certs, trailer rights, tree ID, fungi and P+D pretty good, self taught, ObservaTree volunteer and Tree Life day course, also always kept up-to scratch with knowledge via AA membership and of course a member of ArbTalk for many years. Back then, I was hoping to progress into TI , Vet tree or Eco work but now looking for p/t groundie work with an enthusiastic progressive team not too far from the Redditch area to get back into Arb life, willing to travel though for the right company. I’m sure this thread started out about SawPods, I’ll tell you an honest and on thread reply. As said, £20 is worth it, they last a few years, you instinctively know where your saw is, quick draw and return, the “Pod” certainly helped me become more efficient and organised as a climber, love them [emoji106]
