  1. 99% of me wants the kern but the other 1% wants a rope with an eye for the drt side of things. I do keep on thinking about when I went for a climb with Adam and he said the way he managed to make the move to srt full time was to leave anything to do with drt at home, maybe getting the kern would encourage this!
  2. Have you decided on a new rope Al? Has anyone used ocean vectran for a hitch, it's 6mm?
  3. I work for eight different ones round the sheffield area but I'm originally from woodhall spa. I use a top tie in point most for the time but if I am going to base tie then I just wrap it round the trunk a couple if times and tie a few half hitches round the standing part. I'm just on xtc at the mo so it's like an elastic band when base tied!
  4. Have you been using the kern for drt James or just for access?
  5. I'd say the HH, it's only £20 ish dearer and you get everything with it. I started on the wrench but wasn't keen on it, I was constantly get my gloves stuck in the pulley and I was sure it was only a matter of time until it was my finger. I am quite short and found it was constantly getting in the way. With the HH you can swap so easily between srt & drt that it makes the transition easier and it's nice not having anything above it.

    Postage?

Hi Shane As I said in the first post I wasn't moaning about HB, I just couldn't get my head round why two shops selling the same thing have vastly different postage costs. That's been explained now so all's good, and yes I agree the folk at HB are as sound as a pound. The thread was started because of the first part where a different online company had the super saver box automatically checked, and I if hadn't of read further I wouldn't have noticed that the standard option was nearly half the price and also a day faster. I'm sure you'll agree there's something amiss there hey.
  7. Well I've not been up any trees today but I have been going up and down from the pergola in the back garden. I've been trying out the Knut and after tweaking a few times it seemed to be good. After the first few descents it wouldn't grip each time on ascent but after taking up some slack on the Knut a small amount at a time I got it so it was smooth on decent and grippy on the way up. One thing I did like was it broke and then slack tended like a dream. That's the beauty of the dog bone hey, being able to adjust the hitch mm by mm to get it perfect. I will keep a close eye on it to start with in my next tree.

    Postage?

Alas there isn't or I would gone there instead of spending nearly the same amount on postage as the rope cost... Turned out to be the wrong rope anyway haha!!!
  9. Cheers for the pic Al. The stuff I got's nothing like that so I'll leave it for loops and things!
  10. I think the stuff I purchased is incorrect so I won't use it, I'll stick to 8mm so no worries Al. I will use it to make tending loops though, some of its blue so will look quite groovy haha 😃
  11. Yeah I did have something like that in the back of my mind so was going to find out before use. Thanks for that 👍
  12. I'd go for it bud, the worst that could happen is you sell it for what you bought it for if you don't like it 😀
  13. I don't have a swivel so maybe someone else can answer that. I wouldn't have thought a swivel would really be needed in srt mode though, no other line to cross!
  14. Yes that's it, just clip it back to the ring and off you go. I use another steel crab for that so when I set my line from the deck i just clip it over the line and choke it up. Save tying a butterfly or bowline but you do have to make sure the gates ok. If I was setting my tip for srt I would tie a butterfly and use a mallion.
  15. That's the beauty of it Jake, you don't have to do anything to change from one to the other and it works just as well in both modes. Last week I was climbing some tall(ish) chestnuts. I throwlined in as high as I could, srt'd up quickly, changed to drt to climb to the top and set tip. As I was only getting a few bits of dead wood and raising field side I stayed with drt so I didn't have to remove the HH to retrieve. It would have been good to get the tip straight away and base tie but that will come 😃
  16. It's a nearly new Sherwood combi. It's cheap but has been fine for what I need. It does smoke like hell on the recommended 25:1, will it be ok on my stihl 50:1 then? Would save messing around with two fuel cans!
  17. Hiya Jake It runs soundly on that rope, I really like it. I do imagine though that it'll run a whole lot better on a thinner rope, but I don't know that for sure as 13mm xtc is all I have. The little loop thing is hand stitched out of 6mm rope from go out doors. I did make a taped version out of some rope from B&Q and it was just as good, the only reason I changed it is because I like making things! I'd highly recommend the HH, it's ace 👍 Oh and yes the little loop's for the chest sling to clip into to advance.
  18. I have been wondering about this. I have a combi hedge trimmer, strimmer thing and it says to run 25:1. Whys that and could it be ran at 50:1?
  19. Turned up from where??
  20. Had a little climb with the bearing in place and to be honest it didn't seem to be any better. I think one thing is that the HH is designed for rope between 11mm & 13mm and using the steel crab. As I'm on a 13mm and then the bearing effectively made the crab 2 or 3mm thicker then the bearing was in constant contact with the rope and made it a little tight. It may work really well with an 11mm rope but with a 13mm you're better off without. Still good fun having a little play to see if it did work though 😃
  21. Awesome chap, it's interesting hearing about different combinations isn't it! I quite liked the yellow and black stuff, boa I think, seemed to work well!
