  1. was this tree topped or pollarded, seems to be from that branch structure
  2. snail/slug slime, they hide in cavities, a VTA hack
  3. This interesting article offers a good few insights, especially where evolution and pathogenesis meet. Fungi borrowed bacterial gene again and again : Nature News & Comment
  4. One never suggested it should be applied with dogma, and even Claus would agree with all the above, it is just probability (T/r ratio) of failure takes a rapid upturn on the charts, FOR FULL CROWNED and un-retrenched trees. And that is an indisputable fact. Claus is one of the best teachers I've ever had the good fortune to learn from, both from his books and in person, and I've looked at it all with vigour out in the field, and agree with all of his conclusions on the mechanics of trees. he also simplified it enough for my puny mind to comprehend a matter of great complexity, while all others talk in riddles and mathematical flannel. Some accuse me of taking it almost personally on Claus's behalf when people take the science to task, and I guess there is an element of truth in that, but its more to do with Claus's work being of sound modeling and self evident with field study. The thing I like most is his attitude to the debate, not to let it vex him or concern him, simply let the market choose, you pays your money and takes your choices. You gotta respect that, its confidence, not ego that drives that man.
  5. You know, you really ought to check with the man himself before making assumptions on such things, His data is compiled continuously, and from many places in many woods and trees all over the world. I will come back to this point with something to clarify, as a VTA practitioner I would consider it my duty to make sure The method and its science are not unduly battered by somebody with a clear dislike for the background science of it. People crack me up, I mean he got us all talking mechanics! and VTA is and always will be the basis of all models methods from here to infinity! Others just want a piece of the credit!
  6. yes they did, they said they only sold 300 and discontinued it, begging them to remake one, no joy had the small diesel and i LOVED it, would buy another tomorrow if they did them again.
  7. Its just due respect Sloth, Karma, Payback etc. Trees gave me the life i have had, and also the friends that I met through that life, trees taught me a great deal about the true nature of it all, life. For everyone I get to help I grow a little myself.
  8. seperated from the vascular system the limb used all its water rapidly in the heat, simples. It would have drained EVERY drop from every cell in doing so, trying to maintain function
  9. Some cracking work in this thread David, in particular loving the burnham beech halo
  10. that is VERY interesting, it is also one of the most rot resistant, useful info guys:001_cool:
  11. Im going to PM you my mobile number, dont be afraid to use it.
  12. I suspect the tree was very well reduced, but no images of the entire tree
  13. I didnt mean it was entirely due t the stubs! oh god have i made another boo boo:lol:
  14. cracking stuff doing a bit of milling myself these days so good to see and learn
  15. that tree is a weird one for sure, I dont know how or why the leaders went awol, hard to say withought looking up close, as for the girth, removal of low branches as forced sapflow around the stubs hence the extreme fluted trunk. Its a cracking tree, someone should collar cut the stubs if they havent produced shoots
  16. If nothing comes of this I will personally turn up do the work mulch it and fence it (with oak)
  17. Get in touch with them, and tell them Tony said its a worthy tree, that they should help you out somehow. If you get no joy I will have a word:001_smile:
  18. There is nothing that says adaption here, but suckers do suggest root damage
  19. Yes there is, contact the ATF, if it is a worthy tree they can and will help. Failing that get off your butt and raise the cash yourself, locales are more than willing to chip in if you inform them and educate them to the issues
  20. o the mad part is we actually allow people to tell us how to do our jobs, that is insanity, and not just because the guys telling us havent the first idea!
