  1. As you may know I am a generator engineer qualified electrician and hgv mechanic. Average day turn over for me about £400 but often travel up to 100 miles each way. A lot of days in office organising jobs and quotes but good job could earn me £1000. I think the main problem for tree surgeons is the market is saturated and people are desperate for work. You need to hold your nerve when pricing. If you are on talking terms with your competition agree not to kill each other on price. If you get timber from site you shoulb be able to process and deliver 6 cubic metres in a day = £600 less expenses.
  2. T5 seems to have a few problems with gearbox and water pump. Sprinter a fair bit bigger to drive and more like 25 MPG than t5 35 MPG. Sprinter is a good van with strong engine and drive train.
  3. Freshly felled western ihave in recently for kindling feels very dry and gets down to 16% very quickly. Some of the ash logs i have can still be wet in the middle after years. So it may not be telling as many porkies as you think. All meters go way out when batteries get low so try new ones you may be surprised in the difference. My mate has a Stihl meter and we find it a bit optermistic against my ebay cheapo ie you think your logs are drier than they actually are. I keep hearing people say their logs are down to 10% but the skirting boards in my house are 14% and my house is not damp
  4. I thought they looked a bit flimsy and over priced until last week when one was used to lift great big butts of nearly a tonne and drive them up a 45 degree muddy slope amazing traction no way our bobcat 751 would touch that job.
  5. Yes few people round us selling wet logs cheap.
  6. How much more superfical can you get metro sexual gets someone to fit him a wood burner then someone else to cut the logs. All he does is go to the garage with his bag for life.
  7. What percentage will be over 15"
  8. This sort of vehicle would be ideal for most people unless you need to tow big trailers on regular basis. 4x4 economical nippy and reliable.
  9. So is the disco 2 I have a 53 plate done me really well but now really dated and heavy to drive the wife will hate you for it. Not heard about rav 4 problems if that's the only problem get it modified.
  10. Honda crv fold your legs up great reliability and dealers. Toyota rav 4 reliable well made. Landrover discovery 3/4 great to drive lovely car trendy and sort after don't worry about the fuel consumption you won't notice that will cost more than the average mortgage per month to repair complete junk underneath.
  11. Do Nigerians buy firewood aswell ?
  12. Up to 15" no problem we had 28" stuff on today with an inch clearance as we got to the centre we were having problems. If I do my apprenticeship on a little lt15 I should be model cutomtomer for a log master. We turn over about £600 a week on kindling so need the sums to add up and the wood at the right price. The cross cutting I have down to a fine art automatic with conveyor. We have a lot more enquires than we can fill. The wood Mister is defo fussy on grain and tension. I am used to setting up v16 common rail diesel engines so know the difference between finely tuned and badly engineered. I like over engineered
  13. Run them over if they have a tag on your in the clear
  14. I have an ms180 at the back of the shed I would say stick with the mccullock get some time in and go mid range stihl. Our 180 is as new and we don't even bother with it to prune roses. I would say un even teeth as has been said rather than worn bar.
  15. I tend to think if we can't build a prison to keep them in I won't keep them out
  16. Hours of fun today once we had the machine set up right I found some of our problems over the last few days were caused by tension in the wood as we cut down one side. We reacted to this by adjusting the mill rather than turning the stick 180 deg. We are now also more careful about making sure we have the centre of the grain level. I think we are doing about half a tonne an hour or 40 bags of kindling at times it could be double.
  17. I thought Bryant and may own forest full of the stuff but cost more to extract than they can buy and ship in.
  18. I had a bad experience with larch too many knots but may have been unlucky. I like df and western red currently using poplar. Can't get an arctic in here has to be 8 wheeler have a jcb 525 with forks to unload so may not need a crane. I love auctions know just how to play that game bring it on
  19. 180 cube = 60 cubic metres = 6000 bags of kindling shame your not closer
  20. Debarkers what when why how much don't tell my wife she will have 3. Sounds ideal. Looking at the job yesterday I was thinking I don't want this even if its free due to the hassle of jet washing and paying for transport. The other thing I noticed is the trees are spaced out and not very straight. Ie knots and bends.
  21. I am always booked at least 12 months in advance with 2 days a week spare normally work 6 days. I never answer the phone 9 times out 10 its a sales call let the answer phone get it. Phone lines have been down for 4 days now not made a difference. I like emails it saves all the you said I said hassle also if customer puts job on back burner I can pick it up again in 6 months if I drink 6 pints of cider memories of my first 45 years have gone I am now at the age when you have to write everything down.
  22. Do you have big knot free stuff I could make kindling out of. 20 in stuff is good for the Mizer. How much would it cost for an 8 wheeler to Andover Hampshire.
  23. I have been milling poplar to make kindling and have been offered 75 tonnes that will be skidded through a river and muddy bank. Obviously it will blunt the mizer blades. Jonathan advised jet wash which would be a good idea. Considering its a low profit job is it worth the time and hassle or would you pass it by ?
  24. You may have to throw the old fridge and mattress off first.
  25. A 6 tonne grain trailer will be about 6 cu metres. 50 % will be air = 3 tonne I would say that pile of wood will be 5-8 tonnes. I get 3 tonne on my ifor and it would be at least 2 loads but not 3
