  1. It will be interesting to see how many nests we find this year compared to last. If the 10 fold increase from 2009 to 2010 is anything to go by we are going to be busy busy.......I'm sure views will change. I think the biggest worry is the risk to human health. To be honest trees where we were pulling out up to 10 nests were not showing worrying levels of defoliation....which was suprising given the volume of traffic going out on the crown each night. (see what i did there? out on the crown.. ha ha):biggrin:Especially in a public park such as Richmond. The last couple of weeks we have again been on nest removal......old ones that were missed by the army of spotters last year. We are spraying over the easter period.....certain trees......do not know the exact details yet....havent been handed the dossier!
  2. Dunno.......i thought that the compensatory growth would have extended far higher up the trunk with collybia......a more fluted appearance?
  3. We sent one of the boys up a monster one once.....havent seen or heard of him since:confused1:
  4. This Oak came down during the night last week. As you can see the roots are totally shot. With my limited knowledge I'm taking a guess at Inonotus dryadeus. Although the compensatory growth of the buttress formation doesnt seem to be as apparent as others i have seen. Especially considering how far gone this tree was. Think i will have a saw around further up the trunk to see extent of the decay. There was also alot of black dye like stuff and a black jelly type fungus on one of the roots:confused1: Anyway i'm sure Hama will have a good look at this (can take you to see if you want) and of course The Monkey himself.
  5. Guess I should be gettin on with me job really . That is ya job
  6. Looking toward the towers of Isleworth and Twickenham Rugby stadium.
  7. Today....cold, damp, wet, monday, lethargy, deadwood.......
  8. Not if it is covered in the front section......its just not everybody is au fait with VTA procedure.........as i said all looking good:thumbup: Anything i can help with then let me know eh??? Pretty good on text/photo layout stuff, design layout etc. Have a couple of friends in the printing industry when it gets to that stage for proof copies etc......you know where i am.
  9. All looking good Tony and great to see you have made a start.......remember that any book, design, song, etc etc can take many forms before it is right. to use an apt metaphor....the seed is planted, it then sprouts and continues to grow, it blossoms.! Its early days but you are on the path. Well done mate. Using the beefsteak as an example what about advise for further investigations.? You say failure is low significance except in later stages with multi stemmers etc........On seeing a fruiting body especially with a target it is recommended to investigate further to record the extent of the decay? as with other fungal species?
  10. Get your point and maybe sometimes i am a little too cautious.....but is it not possible that under certain weather conditions (especially the last it was subjected to) that it could have been weakened even more and then the climber is the tipping point (especially if rigging).? I'd have thought with a tree like this get up it.....get the weight off as quick as poss (dropped into the river) and get down.......have a man in the river/stream to fish it out......why stay in the tree and rig any longer than is necessary?
  11. Thats not necessarily trup Rupe. Everything has a tipping point......yes the tree is standing but an additional 15 stone could be that point.....especially considering angle of lean, site conditions and condition of tree.:001_smile
  12. you also have nobody who is depending on you to earn a wage and look after them Tony:001_tt2:
  13. Thats cool.....dont mind that.........rephrase.....i'd climb it but wouldnt rig down on it.........man in tree, man in river with waders.....man on bank......sorted
  14. from that photo alone....over a river........rooted into a bank.....err.......no:thumbdown:
  15. middle of roehampton golf course.
  16. This Oak is ongoing.....aim to alleviate weight off of extended limbs.....was selectively reduced approx 4 years ago and as can be seen has responded very well......has lost a couple of largish limbs in the past. Carried out a further 15% selective reduction. Although not a true vet in my eyes yet it is surely one for the future. Having been up it all day (which was a pleasure to climb) and seen at close quarters that which cannot be seen from the ground It has all the hallmarks of a great vet of the future. Limbs which due to wind force have already twisted, split etc. It has hazard beams, developing cavities, woodpecker holes.....great tree and no targets.
  17. Have shown this before but it surely belongs here.
  18. that was my initial thought but due to the dessicated nature of the bodies wasnt wholly convinced so didnt want to say.........cool. Cheers david......will keep an eye on this one later this year.
  19. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/picture-forum/16800-ancient-crouch-oak.html
  20. i'm going to kick myself on this one i know.......being relatively new fungi freak i wont kick myself too hard but i should know it......i've thought of all the suspects but no use........
