Are you serious????? The tree is approx 500 years old!

Here is the landowners version of events with regards the tree The first meeting I had with the developers was 5 years ago and they planned to demolish the tree then ,managed to talk them out of that plan on grounds the tree met so much to our family and was a great age ,then they told me the route was being altered and the tree was safe ,was happy with that ,then when I seen the plans I was concerned and requested at the pre inquiry meeting to put markers in the tree area where the route is going ,that was granted ,but only 4 days before the public inquiry ,the markers were so close (4m) from the trunk and had a site meeting with my agent and the contractors project manager to say the tree was in danger and his word to us that he would have to get a tree survey done ,I went away and had my own tree survey done at my own costs and produced it at the public inquiry ,they did not produce one ,the inquiry lasted 3 weeks ,I was on in the first week ,2 days before the inquiry ended they wanted permission to come on our land to do this tree survey and Radar and I granted them this request and I had these tree reports about a month after the inquiry had finished ,I am no tree expert but when you see the markers so close to the trunk and under the tree canopy I knew they would be going through the roots oft his tree .

Well they can and that's what's happening now...... Took a fight though and should have been the case in the first place.

Next mission is to get road named The Brimmon Oak bypass in honour of this fine tree. This is such a monumental decision and hopefully can be emblematic in the ongoing campaigning in getting some of our nations finest trees added protection.

So today in the Welsh Assembly a pivitol decision was made to save the Brimmon Oak. For those who do not know The Brimmon Oak is apprx 500 years old and resides on private land which has been subjected to a compolsury purchase order in order to build a by pass. Right at the beginning there was a plan to remove the tree but this was contested by the landowner and the tree had a stay of execution.The plans then meant that the road would run within 3 mtrs of the tree ploughing right through the root system of this fine tree leading to its inevitable demise or even death. A petition of 4500 signatures was presented to the welsh assembly calling for the tree to be saved. Opposition was not against the road but the distance from the tree. An amended route was proposed to ensure a 15mtr exclusion zone around the tree would be adhered to. This was today granted. Fantasic news and positive proof that when it comes to the protection of our nations trees people power and common sense can prevail.

Live stream is a great idea. Neville and family will definitely be interested in hearing about ways to take these seminars forward. I was at the last seminar and hope to make this one, should be a good one.

Well apparently you'd 'definitely' know so 497 it is then.

Hard to say as so many factors dictate the growth rate but I would hazard a guess of anything between 500and 800 years old.

I've been involved in this but on a campaigning level. What is going on in Sheffield at the moment is a disgrace. It's absolutely right that a temporary halt in the felling should be implemented. To have a contractor on a 25 year contract, in charge of not only tree maintenance but also the roads and paths can lead to a serious conflict of interests. Completely healthy mature trees are being removed in order to carry our resurfacing works etc. of course it is not in the contractors financial interest to look at more expensive alternative engineering solutions to retain these very important trees. It's far easier and cheaper to remove the tree completely. This is setting a very dangerous precedent for our town and cities trees. Show me a road in this country where the trees aren't lifting the pavement. Are we to remove all the street trees in London? This contract and the felling policy seriously needs looking at. Jeremy Barrell a leading consultant from Heritage Tree Management after visiting Sheffield has publicly called into question this zero tolerance approach to infrastructure damage and was visibly appalled at the situation. As for the replacement plantings, the photographic evidence of the incompetent planting is astonishing. Root balls exposed, pits far too small, completely loose stakes, the list goes on. It's a sad sad situation.

good thread Steve Heres a woodland London Plane which is pretty remarkable in itself in this country but this one is still going strong despite the abuse it has endured over the years. Hollow trunk set on fire numerous times (now bricked up). Serious compaction and erosion with regards its roots. A remarkable tree:001_smile:

Guess so, i know they can decay at a rapid rate in certain conditions.
