  1. £7.50 a ton for hardwood atm mostly cutting birch, £6 a ton for softwood sawlogs, chip etc, 50p for a softood strainer and 20p for a softwood stake is what id get payed if i was on piece rate atm, but i choose a day rate of £75 just to make sure im making money cause on the sites im on lately it would be hard to make your money, having to spend two tanks cutting hazel just so you can fell the timber and i pay or everything.
  2. Cheers for the offer nick! kind of looking to get out of commercial cutting tbo done it for a couple of years nearly now, looking for a new chllenge. hopefully i wont get bored chris they have wide range of work alot of woodlands that are undermanaged and some nice gardens to look after
  3. cheers guys ive made the right decision in taking it i recon i am looking forward to it! just had a few doubts, a few people recon i can earn more being self employed which maybe the case but then i might have time without work etc cheers people
  4. Im currently a self employed hand cutter i earn about £75 a day doing this but pay for everything like fuel saws etc ive now just been offered a job on the books doing work for an estate, theyve offered me 17 k for the first 6 months and then 18k there after doing 7 30 to 4 30 mon till thur and fri 7 30 till 3 30. i dont think its a bad wage at all but some people think after tax and ni insurance it wont work out to be alot about 54 a day. ive accepted the job atm but i also have a few other choices doing other work for another estate as a self employed estate worker, i will earn alot more money than being on the cards but theres no garantee that it will be work for ever! so the question is what do people think about 17 k and what are peoples opinions on what i should do? cheers stu
  5. what about putting it into fencing, chestnut stakes and strainers for the good stuff and the crap into chip

i thought it was you that put it up charlieh, cheers mate!
  7. I saw a thread on hear a while ago with a link to a forestry commison website which gave all the different output costs for stuff like forest maintainence, fence erection etc, it would be usefull for some work ive been asked to give a quote for, so wondered if anybody remembered this thread cheers stu
  8. Fit youre boughton to the front the county if you do get stuck winch yourself out, for the amount of times you get stuck is it worth buying a new trailer...... plus you county will have more traction than your other machines
  9. good idea if it stops you from getting stuck lol
  10. ive done a bit for an estate, you doing it on a piece rate? i think a rough guide would be ud want to be planting between 100 to 200 trees with stakes and tree guards a day depending on site condtition etc so if your doing 150 a day at 80 pence a tree ud make £120, but price always varies alot.... but then i guess your supplying stake and tree guards to so ul have to work out a price for that. hope it kind of helps stu
  11. just thought id put abit more about myself i studied countryside management at bca for 3 years, finding it hard to get relavant work to this i went into landscaping for a couple of years. i then got a job in forestry which is what ive been doing for the last two years mostly felling work, winching, planting, fencing and machinery operation ive also done some groundy work for a freind on here which i really enjoyed feeding the chipper etc and also proccesing firewood which is one of my favourite jobs ive used a wide range of machinery and have my own saws and ppe etc cheers for reading again stu
  12. Hey people just looking for part time work, im working for a forestry contractor full time at the moment but looking to do a wider range of jobs so looking for a bit of part time stuff maybe twice a week or so il do anything from ground work to firewood proccesing ive got cs 30,31,32,Mo1, pa1 and Pa6aw and forestry first aid im based in reading but wiling to travel about 45 minutes if anybody has anything give me a pm cheers stu
  13. i started hand cutting 2 years ago, i love the work itself felling trees is the best, but i hate the job if that makes sense, thats why ive started looking for other work now, cba with hand cutting any longer really. The contractor said something to me the other day which sums it up, basically said to me i need to cut more timber to pay for the finance on his machinery, but when it comes to me getting payed more it dosn't happen
  14. would you rather do a 10 hour day for £25 or £200 a month for doing nothing? i perosnally wouldnt sign on, but then i defentatley wouldnt work for £25 a day either
  15. Might aswell sign on the dole if you are going to work for £25 a day!! ive worked in commercial forestry for nearly two years ive got my cs 30 31 32 mo1 and pa1 and pa6aw and i only get payed £75 a day and supply all gear so probaly make £60, i think i get ripped off really but works work untill i find something else thats better, if i knew what i know now i wouldnt of got into handcutting work, i think theres more money in establishment but there aint any more work i enjoy than felling trees
  16. whats it called might see if its on bbc i player
  17. just passed my pA1 and PA6 but i didnt do the normal PA6 i did PA6AW which means i can use pesticies in and around water so might be worth trying to do the PA6AW aswell, theres alot of stuff packed into two days but its a good course
  18. Barony college do a certain amount of courses a year i think like 6 week courses where you drive harvesters and forwaders on site then do your assesment but there in scotlands and the course is probaly expensive!!! also theres a course in sweden which a member on here has done as for apprenticeships there probaly hard to find as the company will probaly take on in house apprentices that already have alot of experiance in forestry, ive worked for a guy for nearly two years and have only drove the forwader a couple of times. the best bet for you i recon is two find out the details of an fmo(forestry machine opertions) trainer and do the fmo for the excavtor especially if you have alot of experiance you could do a day or twos training just to cover the assesment schedule and then do the aseesment which will make it alot cheaper atleast then you can operate a digger in the woods then you got do the fmo for the harvesting head stu
  19. im a forester at englefild, i work for a contractor there, where abouts are you based?
  20. ive used a variety of saws the makita's were nice but just didnt feel like a husky guess just personnel preference, at the end of the day i wanna saw thats gunna cut me timber so Husky's are AWSOME:001_tt2: lol
  21. 346 is an awsome saw!! the 550 and 560 are too problematic for me! after having a 560 and taking it back numerous times to get fixed i got rid of it, it seems to me that these new saws coming out dont seem to have the build quality that the old ones do! my 560 went through av mounts like no tommorow, the top case melted cause the top of the exhust had cracked and thats only the minor problems!
  22. the guy i work for is always looking for handcutters, mortimer area near tadley if interested
  23. Why are people picking faults lol no where has it said he's selling a ton of wood, it says ton bag of wood cause everybody should know what a ton bag looks like right! I guess he's just saying that to give an idea of what people will be getting, as for the bag that will varies I guess depending on species, size of log etc
