  1. Start a new thread with pics about your trees and your plans. People may give you some useful advice.
  2. Weeping willows are thirsty so look for water sources. Find out about soakaways - how close are they? Gradient - if on clay and house is on incline, the tree's roots will grow towards where the water is coming from. Why is the trunk so much bigger than supporting crown? Pollarded?
  3. What type of arb are you, John? If you're domestic, municipal or utilities then from your perspective your view is understood. But going from that to all situations and circumstances? If only I were so wise and definite
  4. @CambridgeJC If you've done research, are you proposing to apply for funding for further Climate Change research into the necessity for removing ivy from public footpaths, LA parks and verges? The LA will act only when a certain on a number of health and safety or assessment reports (possibly leading to liability claims or culpable incidents). Remember Norwich and the dangers of conkers dropping on unsuspecting public and the council deciding to cut down all the horse chesnuts or Sheffield and their de-greening program. I still say ivy is a valuable resource and shouldn't be touched unless the tree is being entirely smoothered. Think of ivy as a platform like ebay or amazon. Insects and birds rely on it throughout the year. It is not the devil's work taking over the countryside. If you are a retired scientist what measurements have you taken? Of all the trees in the UK how many pose a problem? Not many. Do we really want all ivy removed from road verges because of it?
  5. PTO? We've got a tatty but solid opico stumpmaster. If interested I'll post some pics.
  6. Our granddaughter lives with us and is at that age of trying on different outfits before going out. I once caught her slinging the unwanted but clean clothes straight in the wash basket just because she'd tried them on for two seconds and rejected them. Words were said. It took a few times before those words got through! She now is well trained or at least doesn't let me see unnecessary clean clothes piled up for washing! Again!
  7. Welcome to the forum. Just a word of warning. Some of us use this forum to push political agendas :) Most of us use it to exchange useful info on kit and fixing it and enjoy the banter. If you're hoping to suggest compliance and civil obedience will carry any weight, may I be the first to wish you a hearty good luck!
  8. Thanks. Google says Devon gets 1550hrs of sunshine per year of 8760hrs. So given your average of 4065kwh per year, and Google saying: A typical domestic household in the UK consumes 3,100KWh of electricity per year, you're doing well. When I did my sums 12 years ago, the cost of a 3000kw install was £14k. The panels were warranted for 25 years but were only 20% efficient and our tariff at the time put daytime electric unit per kw at 11p. Things have changed!
  9. Please say a bit more. Install date on shed, type & make of panel, offset returns for unused electric. I appreciate Devon gets more sun than most despite the rain.
  10. Groomers were dust swept under the carpet. Investigative journalism had to make the case before CPS or constables would take it seriously. Mud slinging or throwing charges around hoping something will stick is something else entirely.
  11. We looked into solar options when install costs were lower and said no. Annual number of sunny days, lifetime warrantees, country of origin were all factors. Community CHP is my preference after the basics like educating responsibility to yummy mummies is drummed up, obviously.
  12. Government invests in its people by keeping the infrastructure up to do date or at least modernised. Tories believe in hands off laissez faire free market economics. So all are infrastructures are privatised. So @eggsarascal pointed out the futility in Just-In-Time gas storage. Others have seen the EDF delays with nuclear. Something's got to give. Given oil is nearly $100 per barrell and frackers break even at $50, this is only going to go one way - given that protesting and such are illegal now. We need a government who will regulate and isn't shy of holding corporations to account. There is hope but it won't be quick. Look at Germany. They have to have coalitions. Perhaps we brits will end up the same in a few decades? Most of us havn't forgotten the Cameron-Clegg travesty though.

  14. If you want to cut this ivy "threat", careful you don't damage the tree bark underneath.
  15. I've heard some say that excess weight make trees top heavy in winter storms and ivy can compete for tree's soil nutrients. But ivy is not dense and has poor roots. In the woods, if ivy is up to a tree's top, smothering the crown so much, the tree can't get its own then I will cut it. Otherwise, ivy is a good habitat for wildlife.
  16. You've used a solicitor before? Get quotes for letters & chase ups and a plan on stages over a time period before instructing.
  17. Our hunt kennels charges £25 each. Massive tangent but what is on the left? Bark looks chestnut but dead leaves in foreground look Acer or Plane. No worries if not known.
  18. True. I simply meant some elites are worth more than celebrity status and inspiring star attraction than most of the rest. A culture minister should know that. If the aussie state's harsh measures are deemed necessary in a country the size of the EU and a pop of less than Belgium and Holland combined, then who am I to disagree?
  19. There's a feeble joke in this about their convict history but what the authorities have done to this sportsman is no laughing matter at all!
  20. Is it you who has sheep? I ask because we are lambing in March. I have permanent pins and needles in my right hand from 2 stroke engine vibes. Takes a while but use left hand for most dexterous demanding tasks now. Good luck.

    Jokes???

There was a young vampire called Mabel, Whose periods were exceptionally stable, By the light of the moon, With the aid of a spoon, She drunk herself under the table.
  22. Yep. Completely agree with you but her Majesty (not the rest of the firm) is PLC not private incorporated, a figurehead at the front of the ship, a cherry on the cake, a star on the Xmas tree. A royal has one job to stay and remain, mainly to see things being done never to actually do anything. So tourist profit and theme park attraction stuff is secondary and no basis for republican argument. IMO
  23. I was chatting about this with my labourer a couple of months ago as he was towing the net gain line. We made made some wild assumptions and fag packet calculations but came to the conclusion that if any company was gifted the kind of land and infrastructure that they have, they would be pretty disappointed with the gains. Say again? For all they have and enjoy possession of, they don't do anything with it or make it work harder for better returns? Other than the Duchy of Cornwall being organic food based landlord is any other royal in trade?
