  1. I think the whole thing about kilning stuff for food use is from a disproportional sense of danger that is drummed into society nowadays. Unless you supply something with bugs obviously crawling on it then once the piece is sanded and oiled it is safe. (Kilning is supposed to eliminate bugs). Or perhaps he was selling kilned products........
  2. Is a kx 80 a kawasaki Matty? (i know less trhan F.A. about bikes lol)
  3. Beech oak or sycamore are all excellent. oil as mentioned above, or these guys offer some superb products, including food safe finishes. This is an oak one i made for the raffle:
  4. Looked at their website today. I reckon a trip down there is in order. Whatever he gets will be getting a proper silencer too....
  5. My son olly is looking at getting a motorbike (he is nearly 11 BTW) to mess around on about the farm. We are told that the CRF100 would be a good machine. Can any of you biker knowledgeable types out there offer any advice or info on this or similar machines, and even possibly if you have or know of one for sale?
  6. IMO vermeer make pretty much the best chippers out there. Good choice. Parts from vermeer (most of which are easily sourceable elswhere) are extortionate however- i never buy bearings etc from them, for example.
  7. Those ar the sort of prices i would suggest Big J. Cornish oak never reaches the dizzying heights of £8 though lol! Its measurement is the mid quarter girth (in inches) squared, times the length of the log (in feet), divided by 144. So you measure the girth of the log at the centre point, in inches, divide that figure by four, square that figure, multiply it by the length of the log (in feet) and divide that figure by 144. That gives you the number of hoppus feet in the log.
  8. If you put the word Haix into the search engine tool in the banners across the top, or the phrase 'chainsaw boot', you will have a plethora of information on the subject! I like haix protector pros.
  9. Belt sanders are okay to a point, after planing, but you will need to finish with an orbital sander or by hand, as you say, with finer and finer grades of paper, as the finish you apply will bring out all those little sanding marks that you think you have sanded out lol. I use different oils for different things. danish oil is a good all rounder, but can darken the wood a little bit. Check out these guys for superb quality oils for every application and lots of useful info. It is the oil/ varnish etc etc that you apply that brings the colour out of your work.
  10. Sorry, but i 110% disagree with this. IME poly bushes do two things- make money for polybush, and eventually wreck the metal they are mounted in, whilst costing a load more.
  11. Wow- very interesting figure to that timber. Nice bowl.

That looks great. I love it. Nice work mate!
  13. I never uploaded this one from today either:blushing:
  14. I was just milling it for someone. They will eventually use it. Its on a large property who use as much of their own timber as they can. They have their own joinery workshop. They seem to have this view of beech as the plain boring stuff that old fashioned childrens cots were made of etc, but if you get really big trees, esp which have had disease, the figuring is almost second to none. How many times I have heard "well beech is a bit boring, we were after some oak really....":001_rolleyes: Here's some more from another job a while back. (affected by merip again) also about 40" diameter.
  15. I had to blow the dust off the alaskan mill yesterday a this was too big for the hudson at 43"!! Milled the really wide stuff at 12' long and a mixture of 2" and 3" boards. Everything else to 2". Meripilus had given it beautiful character.
  16. Broad agri have one of these around the corner mate. Not sure if its for sale or hire.
  17. quote of the program......."probably the most amazing penis of the animal world"
  18. This is getting VERY off topic guys. Lets leave the slanging match behind and get back to the subject.
  19. Coen brothers are superb. As is this one of their offerings. I got in late though so am watrching the sperm whale documentary on 4+1 at the mo.
  20. I am watching it on 4+1...its a bit gory for me TBH, but so interesting I cant stop watching it! Waiting to see familiar faces.
