  1. try this website Allotment Forestry Charcoal Suppliers
  2. Thor do one, which is the one i have. Road legal, 13t splitting pressure, 10HP B&S petrol engine, splits upto 1.1m in vertical but can be used horizontal as well. Contact M.Large as they are the UK importers, they should put you in touch with local dealer Use mine to split in to 3-4ft billets. Also hired it out with me as operator 5 times this winter (£25-£30/hour, min 4 hours) One job was to split some really old Ekki rings up to 4ft diameter and 18" thick - client had been looking for 2 years for some one to come along and do it, good machine!
  3. IMO you wont see a decent ROI on £40k for startup. Firewood processing is very labour intensive so most of the return will be paying you for your time. I started this time last year with huge amount of support and info (and timber) from arbtalk. Already had L200, spent less than £10k and have everything I need to hopefully sell up to 200 cubic metres/year for the next 3 years, if that works I may look at expanding.......and if it doesn't work out that way I won't be in financial trouble
  4. We have Hakki Pilke Eagle bench saw with screw splitter. Not had many problems with it so far but only use it when cutting long straight timber that needs to be split, quick and easy to use when the machine is already set up. The cone is covered with a guard and only exposed as the log is presented to it on a pivotted bed. There is also a knife fitted underneath to prevent logs being thrown off. The only problem I've had is when the log is very knotty, the screw grabs it and just drills itself in - bit of a pain to remove, so no more knotty stuff!
  5. As Peter said, and there's no reason why it shouldn't be ready for next winter. Stacking in billets is easy as you can get them high and the wood dries out quickly. Just tie a tarp over the top to keep most of the rain off
  6. The timber will need to be picked up from a site just south of Stanlow Oil Refinery near Ellesmere Port and taken to Nantwich. Don't think there is anything over 22" or so any ideas on costs - pm if you like, cheers Dave
  7. came across this on another forum, some one has a large piece of timber for milling, any one interested (Dulwich, london) Work offered! SWOG Forum
  8. Chantler's haulier is on my list to contact, wsan't sure if he'd do a part load though. Cheers anyway
  9. I have about 10-15T timber (dead elm) to transport from north cheshire to south cheshire probably in September. Could ideally do with truck with timber crane (contractor or self-drive, don't mind) Any help/suggestions most welcome Cheers Dave
  10. Rings of timber, even hardwood, would be a nightmare for walking on. Wont take long for the sapwood to start rotting, fungi everywhere etc I think that's why decking was invented
  11. I live not too far away from John and have sold over 70 cubic metres at £100 per cube
  12. you might want to try posting on this forum - owners of small woodlands all over uk often looking for small outlets of timber SWOG Forum
  13. I sold 30T poplar this winter. Bought it last spring, processed in to billets by june, ready to burn by october - lots of repeat customers came back for it
  14. 2 cubic metres loose mixed logs - fresh cut - weighed 900 kg on a weigh bridge a standard bulk bag 80cm x 80cm x 80cm is 0.512 cubic metres and when filled with these logs would weigh about 225kg hope that helps
  15. there are a couple of chimney sweep institutes that offer training courses that then allow you to become a member of their institute. Checked on their websites and my nearest recognised/qualified sweep is about 40 miles away. Will do some more research in to it but looks like there is a shortage around here
  16. Thanks for the replies Was really just after an idea what other people pay for chimney sweeping but with hindsight I guess it looked like I was complaining. That was not what I intended. Got a price off him beforehand and was happy to pay. Just made me think whether it is something I could look into as an extra service for my firewood customers.
  17. Just had a sweep round to clean out chimney for log-burner and flue from wood-burning Raburn, £30 each! Is that too much? It only took about 20-25 minutes for each one. £60/hour and all you need is a small van, good vacuum and a set of rods with two sizes of brushes and a few dust sheets
  18. will call them first thing, cheers

    oak

50 euros for a bundle of oak plank off-cuts ? Any idea what weight in each bundle? Are they seasoned?
  20. Any one had any problems with thor logsplitters I have a farmer multi-use 13T road towable splitter, 10HP B&S engine, double pump. It has two operating speeds. When I use the faster speed itmakes the engine stall sometimes, even when it's not splitting any logs. The engine is running fine, could it be the spool valve? Any advice appreciated
  21. How much you paying for oak from Germany?
  22. Yes it will attract business rates, when they catch up with you! Also you may want to check with EA to see if they had any objections. My firewood yard is on a farm and had to check with EA. Nearly all the buildings on the farm are being rented out to a variety of businesses, the farm has PP for change of use but I believe it is up to the individual business to inform the authorities Re business rates! ( so mum's the word!)
  23. Top firewood. Split and season asap
  24. I have two portable machines for cutting/splitting and hire them out with operator. Website looks like a good idea and I'd probably sign up for it
  25. 5% to end user, 17.5% to everyone else
