  1. Couldnt possibly comment on the weblift, But as another alternative, these are supposedly very very good: Winch : SherrillTree Tree Care Equipment
  2. Tilhill are well into brash baling I believe - quite right too, must be millions of pounds worth of brash going to waste every year.
  3. OUCH. Not something I would like to experience personally... sounds bloody painful mate. I take it you made a full recovery?? has/did the whole experience change the way you work or your opinion on the work??
  4. Err.... great idea John... possibly a legal minefield I rekon. On a different tack though, you can already find out about bad payers etc with Experian or suchlike. Simples, have a basic contract made up for all jobs and ask your customer if they will be requiring credit, and explain to them that credit is available for 30 days no problem at all as long as they meet the criteria of a basic credit check.... I doubt you'd get many customers wanting somebody trawling through their credit file and would end up getting paid up front on completion 9 times out of 10. You could set you're site up as a credit check website as a reseller of experian or similar and actually use it to good effect. The cost of the credit checks on customers can easily be added ontop of the specific job in question at the time of quoting. Just a thought to chuck around.
  5. I use Trust... Thoroughly reccomend them!! (Right Cameron - you better offer me a damned good quote come renewal time in december, wink wink)
  6. apart from drizzle and the odd heavy shower it's been a normal day up here... heard there have been 100mph winds recorded down south. Gutted.
  7. We always cut and then spray with roundup within 20 mins of cutting, then go back about 6 months later and re-spray any regrowth. Seems to work well.
  8. We do allot of work on dayrate - I'd take the money to be honest. We get the same ammout of work done in the winter anyway - cold crappy days keep the boys working to get finished and get home. If daylight is an issue... work harder!
  9. I would say that 1.5 - 2 acres is nowhere near sustainable for for 'self sufficient' wood fuel needs. If you have Ash and Syc, why not consider coppicing, which would make the wood much more sustainable for the future, and would provide an initial hit of fuel from cleaning and coppicing works. Again - take advice from the small woods association SmallWoods.org.uk - Home
  10. ouch. sily sod.
  11. Phwoar!!!! Is that in Elgin by any chance???? Not guilty here Jamie!
  12. Simon, that is fantastic mate!!
  13. Done plenty of gorse clearance... personally I favour the cut and chip method. One man cutting, two clearing and chipping with a tracked chipper, spread the arisings out well and give them a dose of time and they'll rot down and leave the site looking good. Burning is another option but there's handling and kit involved to shift it to a burn site, although it works well if your gorse is in clumps rather than solid, simply cut them off and then burn them where they lie. Tractor and swipe can work well on gorse too.
  14. What you looking for gibby??
  15. hmmm, interesting one.. the customer is always right! (even when they're wrong)
  16. I thought so too.. I will be holding out for the best price possible, even if that means playing buyers against each other. even £5 a ton difference is a hell of alot of money over a good size thinning.
  17. I'd be happy at £30 a ton at roadisde... man's got to make a living and all!
  18. Ahhhhhhhhh ok. Thankyou also to TNT
  19. People like BT Customerstreet use the exact same tactics. Called me asking for a quote, then when I called them back it was to sell me website hits and a listing on thier directory! Cheeky.
  20. Just a quick one to blow F.R Jones & Son's trumpet a bit.. Ordered a new top pulley yesterday with Justin which was not in stock and so he arranged for a direct delivery for me.. Ordered at 3pm yesterday afternoon, arrived on the oorstep today at 11am IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS which normally adds a day onto any delivery 24hr or otherwise. Cheers Justin! Absolutley top service mate.
  21. Makes sense about the chipwood. The firewood is good down your way.. I was offered £24 at roadside for birch last week!
  22. Most of our stuff goes to Dalcross (Norbord), contractors are usually paid around £16 a ton at roadside, so by the time it is sold to the final customer it must be at least £20 a ton if not more if you consider the estate would take thier share and probably the management company take thier cut also. What is firewood (birch) making down you're neck of the woods??
  23. It's more like £20/ton at roadside for chipwood at the moment.
  24. Cant believe an insurance company would advocate such unprofessional, immoral practices. There is something fundamentally wrong here - the insurance company are playng devils advocate. I would get all the details together and put a case against them to trading standards, financial services authority and any other bodies that govern insurance companies. They should be bought to task over this just on the very principal of it. Understand what you're saying about not being worried about firewood hunters, but giving a customer 'professional' advice to use a teacher to clear a hazardous tree!! OMG! WTFH!!
  25. It's bonfire night on thursday..... wonder what you'll be doing!!? lol!!!
