  1. Was just carving some shrooms out of pine and noticed this blue stuff - looked it up on the net and it seems to be Blue Stain? As far as I could find out it isn't a decaying fungus itself but it eats away the wood's naturally protective resin and allows decaying fungus in (feel free to correct me if it's wrong, I don't know much about fungus). I don't want to sell people carvings that are about to disintegrate but I wondered if it would stay the same or worsen once sanded and covered in a couple of coats of preservative? Cheers
  2. Carbon dioxide does? Not starting an argument anyway, enough of that on here already It's just there are a lot of speeches like this going on and although it all makes sense, I wonder if she is living her life in a way so as not to support any of the issues she is opposing? I think in most cases it is (unfortunately) extremely difficult to.
  3. Good on her in sentiment... though not sure about starting an ozone layer rant with "we travelled 5000 miles to get here".. wonder if they cycled?
  4. I used to use it a lot but no one seems to any more.. I tried to go on earlier and it didn't work I'll give it another go
  5. Happy birthday toooo yoooouuuuu! Thanks Arbtalk for the decent people I've met, useful information I've had and for inadvertently hooking me up with my partner
  6. The above mentioned company also had an LDV.. driving up a 3 degree incline with a handful of brash in the back it sounded like the engine was about to explode, wouldn't have been at all surprised if a milk float overtook us
  7. I don't know much about vehicles but a company I worked for used Canters and they seemed to be a very smooth ride, fairly quiet and fairly powerful as far as I could see
  8. I think a back handled 200T is just a 200 ("T" for "Top-handled")? I've only used one once, I use an MS192 CE which is the newer lightweight carver's easy start pansy edition. I can't tell how it compares to a 200 but it seems to work for me.
  9. Not that this is of any use but I have some Protector Pros and they're great, I haven't got any sort wear or cracking like that but I suppose it depends what sort of work you're doing in them eg. climbing etc. Just thought it was worthing mentioning in case it's a bad batch rather than overall product quality?
  10. Thanks for all the comments and compliments guys! Feel very flattered and a bit more confident about it all Any suggestions for more carvings to try would be gratefully received! I'm trying to stay away from the obvious for now but it's hard to find things that aren't either too obvious or too complicated.. I'm thinking of having a go at shells of some sort, any tips? Someone has asked for a troll so I'll have to work out how I'm doing that
  11. Cheers, yeah tis lovely the cedar I've got seems to be quite wet though which makes it hard to sand, is that characteristic of the wood? Or have I just got some fairly freshly cut stuff?
  12. Merci I realised halfway through that I should have timed it but really I was just taking my time seeing how well I could do it. Spent probably about a day carving and did a little bit of sanding to it today, so hopefully will have some finished pics to post soon.
  13. Totally agree with that.. out of all the people I knew from school none of them are learning any sort of trade, and when I've asked what their plan is it starts "Well I'll leave Uni then get a house then.." and I'm thinking what? How?! I think Uni has its purpose if there's a particular thing you want to do and you need particular qualifications to do it (a doctor for example), but I feel a lot of people do it partly for something to do and partly to keep in with all their friends and the social side of it.
  14. I'm no expert but I would have thought you'd have a reply by now so I'll give it a go Are you talking about buying a small amount or getting a big load in? My partner recently got a mixed 25 tonne load for his firewood business so I got some western red cedar tagged on to carve, seems to be nice and didn't work out too expensive.
  15. PS - just mentioning that the lines on the seahorse are charcoal markings in case it looks like I've gone a bit mental with the saw
  16. Hi guys, I've had enough of mushrooms for now so thought I'd have a go at my first "proper" carvings. The Moai head is carved from western red cedar and I'm waiting for it to dry out a bit before sanding. The seahorse is pine and I've got a bit of touching up to do with the 192 then I can sand it and then see what other finishing I want to do. Just thought you might like to have a look go easy on me
  17. Newspaper from back home daan saaf has an article about a mysterious web on a small tree - Hertfordshire Local News & Hertfordshire Events News | News From Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Waltham & Royston | Web of intrigue in Stanstead Abbotts I emailed asking for a bigger pic, just wondered what you guys think it could be? Or even what tree it is? Dave reckons it could be the oak processionary moth (obviously dependant on what tree it is)? Cheers!
  18. Cheers guys, got a lot of stuff to try! I'll have some nice fairy liquidy spitty glasses in no time 18 Stoner - Yeah, I have been pinching the metal bit down Ian - Cheers for the link, something to consider when I've got a bit more dosh
  19. Made you look Bit of a weird/trivial question.. I've been doing a fair bit of carving sanding lately. I wear the Stihl safety glasses but I've also got some disposable dust masks I'd like to use. However! - when I have both on the glasses mist up like I'm carving in a sauna. Anyone got any tips to avoid it? I've tried spraying the glasses with some anti-mist spray I use for my bike helmet visor but it doesn't seem to have done much Cheers! Jen

  21. You mean you never noticed what's actually going on?!
  22. Depends what you're getting tattooed as well, could get NPTC CERT across your fingers?
