  1. I would not bother milling poplar. The wood is good for nothing except burning. UK poplar is not the same as American poplar also known as tulip wood that is good for cabinet making.
  2. You are turning out great stuff. My wife was very pleased with the bottle stopper. How about some photos of your excellent nest boxes. John
  3. Good to meet you again Clive and see you impressive set up. Those 4th diam logs are what the Lucas mill likes best but as we found it hates nails. I put the winches at opposed corners as the stays work better in compression pushing into the ground especially as we were on concrete and they were only screwed to a couple of big rings. John
  4. It is a bit too far from me for me to be interested in buying the timber. However I could bring my Lucas Mill over in exchange for a trailer load of boards. Could you use the remaining timber. John
  5. I would offer £50 for the butt. I have no market for walnut so to me it is less valuable than good oak.
  6. Made this many years ago. We split all the dead elm with it. It's not as straight as it used to be but still does the job.
  7. Yes, both Geoff and his parents are great.
  8. The oak that I milled in Geoff's parent's garden over 2 years ago has been air drying in my shed. I had a job come in to make 2 pairs of oak casements windows so I thought I would pull a bit out to see how dry it was. 17% so I went ahead and used it. Very satisfying to use Essex oak with about 15 wood miles.
  9. If you have no luck here try over at The Forestry Forum. There are some very helpful Woodmizer employees that go on there regularly. Congratulations on getting the new mill. John
  10. I have one but it's not for sale. If you want a demo and have something nice to mill then get in touch. I am based just outside Dunmow. John
  11. Sorry for hijacking this thread but here is another photo of my baby.
  12. That is my baby Zetor. The photo was taken a few years ago before it went down to the woods. It doesn't look as smart now.
  13. I have one but it's not for sale. I would be prepared to loan it for a few months if you could store it in the dry. It is in woods near Llandovery. I have a video on YouTube. Search "stake peeling" Machine is a Neuhauser John
  14. Cafe is at Little Canfield. Only open at weekends. We also used to play on the line. As soon as they took up the tracks in the 70's we were able to drive an old Morris 1000 traveller that we had on the farm up a byway and then turned right onto the railway line. We could drive all the way to Dunmow. Those were the days, I was about 12 at the time.
  15. Cycled 15 miles with my wife on the back roads of Essex. The last few miles were on the Flitch Way near Dunmow. We stopped at the new cafe at Canfield for a bacon roll. Trudi, who is still on chemotherapy was riding her electric bike, what a fantastic machine, it's a real tonic. John
  16. Thanks for your replies. So would it be necessary to dig out the roots or could we not cut of at ground level and replant between the stumps. The leylandii are planted about 3 ft apart. John

  18. One of my customers asked me to look at his his hedge. Although the top looks quite healthy the sides are dying off. Is this frost damage. It has been getting worse over the last couple of years. Would it be best to remove the whole hedge and replant or could we cut it down to say 18 inches and hope it would regrow. Thanks in advance John

  20. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=CUgSgKFC22M I hope this has not been posted before. Not bad for a 96 year old!
  21. One I made earlier.
  22. I am in in Essex and could make you a table. I will see if I can find a few photos of ones I made earlier. John
  23. I milled a turkey oak that I had of Peter. Very slow to dry , warps and shrinks well but is great timber for internal projects. I wish yours was closer to me. John
  24. I have a Lucas, but I am in Essex. So sorry not much help. John
